The annual Lady Cougar Classic basketball tournament kicked off Thursday with five of the six area teams entered seeing action including Faith Academy, Ganado, St. Joseph, St. Paul and Yorktown
From that group, it was the host team and St. Paul who put themselves in the best position to play for the tournament championship by winning their first two games.
The Lady Cardinals (5-1) began the day by outlasting Ganado 57-48. Shelby Bohuslav had a game-high 18 points for St. Paul, while Jessica Rivera led the Maidens with 16.
After knotching a blowout win over Providence Classical 52-22 to open tourney play, St. Joseph met up with St. Paul in the second round. The Lady Flyers were scrappy, but struggled with the Lady Cardinals' stifling full court press and lost the game 50-34.
Bohuslav led all scorers with 17 points and Victoria Sanchez had 11 to lead St. Joseph.
"We worked real hard on just hustling and trying to find the ball," said St. Paul head coach Dana Beal. "We had a big layoff between games and that gave us a chance to figure out what we needed to do better."
Faith Academy also went 2-0 on the day by drubbing Believer's Academy 55-22 to advance to the semifinals. Courtney Duke led the Lady Cougars with 12 points.
Woodsboro will begin tourney play Friday at noon against San Antonio Christian Academy at the Faith Academy gym. Semifinal play begins Saturday at the gym, beginning at noon.
