Walden resigns
Ray Walden, a school board member for 8.5 years, announced his resignation at the board meeting because a relative is applying for employment in the school district.
As part of the district's nepotism policy, no board member may have a family member employed in the district.
"I cannot deny family members an opportunity to pursue these endeavors," Walden said at the meeting. "Tonight's meeting will be my last meeting, effective tomorrow."
Lou Svetlik said the board will meet in December to decide whether to appoint a new board member or hold a special election to fill Walden's position for the rest of his term. Walden's term expires in May, Svetlik said.
Other business approved by board
Memorial High School Speech and Debate team will travel to San Francisco from Feb. 5 to 9 for the Stanford University Invitational. The trip will be paid for through fundraising and student contribution.
Victoria ISD Education Foundation will award grant funds for teachers through its Grants for Great Ideas Program.
Students in Victoria Ballet Theatre will have related absences considered extracurricular.
City of Victoria will install a fiber-optic cable from the city's facilities to the new building at Crain Middle School.

No sleeveless shirts, blouses or dresses allowed
Female students' necklines must not show cleavage
White undershirts worn by themselves are not permitted
Tattoos depicting sex, gangs, violence, skulls, blood, gore, alcoholic beverages, illicit drugs, tobacco products, preoccupation with death, sadism and evil are not permitted. All tattoos reflecting any of the above must be covered.
School-sponsored uniforms must be in compliance with dress code
The public got its first look at the new logos for the Victoria West Warriors and the Victoria East Titans on Thursday.
The logos were on display at the Education Center for the regular school district board meeting.
The logos were not discussed at the board meeting because it was not an agenda item, but Lou Svetlik, board president, said after the meeting he likes the way they've turned out.
"They're examples of productivity," Svetlik said. "As I understand, the students had a lot of input on that, which is the best way to go about it. They certainly look acceptable."
Earlier this school year, Herff Jones, the company that designs and distributes class rings and caps and gowns, gave both Memorial High School campuses some logo samples, said MHS Senior Campus Principal Greg Crockett.
The art teachers from the senior campus and from the Stroman campus have students who will feed into the two new high schools. They had their students tweak the logos and then vote on their favorite sample, Crockett said.
Both logos will continue to be tweaked and adjusted before they are finalized, said Diane Boyett, school district communications specialist.
The logos will remain on display in the administration building lobby.
The logos are part of the new high schools under construction. The schools are set to open in August.
In other business, Nancy McCord, secondary schools assistant superintendent, presented to the board the dress code committee's recommendations for the 2010-11 school year.
The board agreed to hold a special meeting on Dec. 9 to finalize the dress code.

Per UIL rules, since both schools will be 4A both schools will have to be in the same district since they are both VISD schools.
I like the logos. They are way better than the funky M (that's above the gym) that Dr. Wrinkles wife came up with in 1999 for Memorial.
November 23, 2009 at 11:43 a.m.i would also prefer to see the two schools in different districts for the first two years
November 21, 2009 at 9:04 p.m.Super, It is imperative the two be placed in the same district by the UIL. In fact, they should play each other on respective Homecomings. It would create a good strong rivalry. And as you know, that creates excellence. I see big community support, huge band participation, and even a taped delayed TV broadcast. Sure, there can only be one QB, a few cheerleaders, etc, so what.
November 21, 2009 at 6:16 p.m.Stop trying to dilute the competition by this "feel good, politically correct" democratic dogma.
any consideration with UIL in putting the schools in differ districts?!?! Maybe one play towards El Campo area and the other going to Rockport area. Just to give the city a time to support the schools and we also could have 2 teams in the playoffs.
I know it won't happen!
November 21, 2009 at 5:18 p.m.How about the West Fire Ants and East Misquitoes?
November 21, 2009 at 12:20 p.m.I think these logos will look good on the side of football helmets and the colors could lead to some good looking uniforms.
There is one main reason a large number of pro sports teams use red and/or black in their color schemes (they are usually the best sellers).
Also the colors should lead to a uniform paint scheme at the events center facilities. Imagine the seizure-inducing color scheme that would have been in place if the district had to use red, black, teal and silver paint in all the venues?
Having common colors should allow both schools to feel at home when playing and will do the same even when they play each other and one school is the "visiting" team.
When I used to broadcast SHS vs. VHS football games, it never felt like a home game for Stroman High at Memorial Stadium even when they were the home team.
I am excited for the atmosphere that rival high schools will create in this city.
November 21, 2009 at 10:05 a.m.Going back to the old logos would have been better than these choices. At least there is some school history involved in those. By that I mean alumni's that have pride in their schools.
November 21, 2009 at 8:51 a.m.I agree but what options were they given? were any logos that depicted victoria's history even considered? Lets be real about this. the options were created by some company that designs rings(not from victoria) not by the students or the community. So I say start over and get it right.
November 21, 2009 at 8:42 a.m.Let's respect what the students voted for. I know it is hard to accept change, but it is, what it is, a new moment in time.
November 21, 2009 at 8:35 a.m.What do warriors or titans have to do with victoria? I would think that the powers that be could have come up with something that reflects this cities area and history much better than some psuedo middle age images that have nothing to do with victoria. We have a long and storied history that could have been tapped for ideas. From the spanish colonization of this area, Lasalle's exploration, texas independance and local history, IMO there are much better historical themes that should have been used. Why place these symbols that have nothing to do with victoria on our schools. It would be better to have our history depicted instead of old world logos. We have such a rich and diverse history that surely they could have found something.
November 21, 2009 at 8:18 a.m.I think the warriors one looks like it has a bird face on top and the titan has a sword going through it? and i agree with people saying not enough difference. They are hats.Could they not come up with a real mascot?
November 20, 2009 at 7:42 p.m.Perhaps it's my bi-focals that need tweaking, but both logos look to me like something out of medieval Europe. They look like knights armor. Note the shield, face covering and plume on the Warriors logo and the sword and helmet with plume on the Titans logo. They look like they're getting ready for middle ages tournement. Of course, it could just by my bi-focals. At any rate, either are better than Vipers...God, how I HATE snakes!
November 20, 2009 at 7:11 p.m.Well the west warriors logo looks to me like it has the old Stroman S at the end, not complaining, just saying.
November 20, 2009 at 6:38 p.m.The choosing of the mascots was such a great (lost) opportunity to build a bridge over the colossal blunder of consolidation by using Raiders & Stings, but instead, we get these generic mascots that have no regional relevance.
November 20, 2009 at 6:18 p.m.I don't know, but there is something about the Warriors logo that is very appealing.
November 20, 2009 at 6 p.m.Students from the high schools and jr. highs voted for the colors. Since neither one was "established" everyones favorite was red and black. It would not be fair to give those to colors to one school and make the other pick two others. Warriors was "banned" as depicting indians or native americans. Plus these are the suggested logos they can still be "tweeked".
November 20, 2009 at 5:51 p.m.I agree with GridironJS; they both look very similar, too similar actually. Why are the colors nearly the same? The warriors lettering reminds me of gang graffiti I have seen. The Titans logo is actually pretty good. The Warrior logo needs a remake or serious tweaking.
November 20, 2009 at 5:17 p.m.Using what no doubt will become the most famous words throughout history, "I like it here, it's exciting!" - Star Trek
November 20, 2009 at 4:29 p.m.The logos look the same? I like the Silver and Black and Gold and Red though. That is the only cool thing about the two schools. A guy I work with said his friend is going to get Silver and Black "West" hats made as we speak. Can't wait! Go Warriors! Let the games begin!
November 20, 2009 at 4:23 p.m.One looks to have red and white in it?
November 20, 2009 at 4:18 p.m.the titanadores and the warrioradores ?
November 20, 2009 at 4:01 p.m.I'm going to get hanged for this, but I like the Warriors. In the tweaking however, If someone were to make the Warriors blue, outlined in gold, I wouldn't be offeded, lol. At least I'm a former Raider that is willing to compromise.
I'm going to be so hanged, when my family finds out.
November 20, 2009 at 3:50 p.m.I like Stingarees and Raiders better!
November 20, 2009 at 3:37 p.m.The logos are very generic looking, just like the names of the high schools and mascots. Way to be creative Victoria!
November 20, 2009 at 12:30 p.m.One logo seems to be more red gold black (titans) while the other is more black red silver (warriors). I think this will help create unity in the comm(unity) rather than constantly pitting the two schools against each other as was done with the previous 2 high schools. Plus since they will be using the same athletic facilities painting will not cause too much problem since the share common colors. And for all those keep VHS going---duh, look at the main colors !!!
November 20, 2009 at 11:42 a.m.And school colors? Looks to me they will be the same- silver, red, black...surely not!
November 20, 2009 at 11:33 a.m.The logos are now posted.
November 20, 2009 at 11:31 a.m.Can someone attach logos so we can see them online please?
November 20, 2009 at 11:01 a.m.Ray Walden, Thank you for your service and integrity on the board. Giving a family member a source of income for thier family is a sacrifice you should be commended on.
On the other hand, how the heck is our A.D. (public servant) gonna appoint personnel? Is it selective interpretation placement, SIP, by the committee.
