Season rematches
Class 4A, Division II area - Calhoun vs. Mercedes
Cuero linebacker Tanner Hoffman hasn't forgotten last season's playoff game against Sealy and he isn't surprised the teams will meet again.
"We were expecting to play them and we've been prepared for it," Hoffman said. "You know what to expect, but it's a whole new team so you can't rely on what happened last year."
Hoffman's sentiments are shared by players around the Advocate-area getting ready for this weekend's second-round games.
Seven teams are involved in playoff rematches and another will face a team it played earlier this season.
"There's some advantages and some disadvantages," said Calhoun coach Richard Whitaker. "It's hard to scheme for a team twice, but you also get some idea of how to defend."
Whitaker's Sandcrabs will meet Mercedes in the Class 4A, Division II area playoffs after playing in the season opener the last two years.
"In August, we were young, inexperienced football teams," Whitaker said. "Now we're both seasoned teams. We've learned a lot about ourselves."
Refugio and Dilley know almost everything about each other. The teams will meet in the Class 2A, Division II area playoffs for the third straight season and have scrimmaged each other the last three seasons.
"We know too much and they know too much," said Refugio coach Jason Herring. "There won't be any surprises. We know them and they know us. We do look at the tapes because we see so many different defenses that we want to be prepared."
Cuero didn't spend much time looking at tape of last year's Class 3A, Division I regional game against Sealy. The Tigers are running a new offense this season.
"They're really a completely different football team than they were last year offensively and defensively," said Cuero coach Mark Reeve. "They've had a couple of guys come in and taken over the offense. They're more of a spread team."
Industrial is also looking for some new looks in its Class 2A, Division II area rematch against Three Rivers.
"They have a new coach so they'll be somewhat different," Industrial coach Doug Kuhlmann said. "We both have some of the same personnel they're just a year older. They have a new coach so looking at the tape will probably help them more than it will help us."
El Campo gets a big boost in its Class 4A, Division II area rematch against Houston Yates. El Campo will play at Ricebird Stadium for what is believed to be the school's first home playoff game.
"We've played Yates since 2006 so we're pretty familiar with them," El Campo coach Bob Gillis said. "You have the same coaching staffs so you know you're going to do some of the same things. But each team has its own identity."
Shiner and Goldthwaite won't change their long-established identities in their Class 1A, Division I rematch.
"You still have to look at the tape because coach (Gary) Proffitt has been there as long as (defensive coordinator Billy) Turek has been with us," said Shiner coach Steven Cerny. "It's not so much that you're doing something different. It's that you do it well."
Shiner St. Paul and Hallettsville Sacred Heart will be looking at the tape to see what they can do successfully in their TAPPS Division IV regional rematches against Frisco Legacy Christian and Richardson Canyon Creek, respectively.
But as much as coaches seek an edge, they know the result usually comes down to execution.
"We've looked at things we didn't do well and the things we had success with and we'll try to do again," Whitaker said. "You just tweak some things and you add a few things. Mostly you just try to do things better."
