Woman runs light, collides with police car A San Antonio woman talking on a cell phone, ran a red light and caused a three-vehicle wreck Thursday afternoon.

A police patrol car driven by Officer Jett McFalls struck the passenger side of a silver Mazda RX-8, driven by Rachel King, 24, at the intersection of Laurent Street and Port Lavaca Drive, said Officer Travis Hanson.

King's car spun into Chad Martinez's white GMC 1500 truck that was stopped at the red light.

Martinez, who lives in San Antonio, told officers that he saw King run the red light, Hanson said.

McFalls has worked for the police force more than four years.

McFalls reported the wreck and checked on King on scene.

Fire department personnel removed King from the car and transported her to DeTar Hospital Navarro.

  • I saw a report recently that claimed talking on the phone while driving was more dangerous than a drunk driver with twice the legal limit of alcohol. I believe it and have been nearly wrecked many times by drivers on their phone. I hope the police go after these people before they find the extra time to enforce parking violations.

  • No mention of a citation being issued for running a red light and causing an accident, WHY? Oh, I know, its under investigation!

  • I live in California and see people still talking on their cell phones all the time. Not a few people but a lot of them. They can talk if they have a hands-free device but I have noticed a lot of people talk with it away from their ear like they are not breaking the law. Yes it is dangerous to talk on the cell phone and drive and even worse to text and drive. I certainly don't feel like I have lost a right. Public safety is more important. You can still use your cell phone while driving just have a hands-free device to use it with. Makes sense to me.

  • tnt88- 1st put her in a legit driving class. the ones the parents' monitor is a joke. they pencil in hours and the child gets NO road driving education. They dont know road signs, street marking or its meanings.

2nd, use tough love. take the cell phone away the first month (just while in the vehicle, lol) enough distractions. No more than 1 friend rider the 1st month, same reason.

3rd. show her a public announcement video clip of cell ph. and driving errors. a good one. caution graphic! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pubTiD...

  • tnt88...sometimes the straight up way is the only way to go...so, straight up...you could DIE! Don't text and drive, you could get in a wreck and die! I have used that on my kids with many potentially danerous things or situations and they just dont try it. Show her some video's or try and find a sight where sadly this has happened to a teenager. Sometimes when it's staring them right in their face it makes a diffrence. IDK...I just try to keep things real with my kids. If it could kill them that is one of the first things I tell them. Not trying to make a joke. Just being honest on how I am with mine sometimes.

  • I have a 16 year old who will be behind the wheel soon. Does anyone have a suggestion as to keeping her from using text while driving without taking her phone away, I'm suppose to trust her at her word that she won't, but that scares me and she is a text attic.

  • Well, I'm on the roads a lot and I am a woman just to make that clear. Every time I turn my head at a red light, in a parking lot, drving down the road, just EVERYWHERE....women have their darn phones stuck to their ears. It ticks me off. I can't count on one hand how many times I have almost been sideswiped, rear ended, or broadsided by a woman because she was talking on the phone rather than paying attention.

That's just my exsperinces though. And yes, I have seen men on their phones but not nearly as many men as women.

Oh, God and don't let me forget the young "girls" that just have to talk to their boyfriends or girlfriends rather than pay attention and drive the darn car that their daddy got them!

It just really really annoys me. I have my children with me most of the time and I jsut fear the worst when driving in this town. I honestly feel like I am driving in Houston or heck Los Angeles! If you have been there you know what I mean! LOL!

  • Hoppy?

Job phones? Don't have those buddy.

I agree though, put the phones down while you drive!

  • S&T,
I understand cell phones are used as a valuable tool for public service and all sorts of business. Is a service call less distracting than a personal call? This week I saw an officer steering with his knee, sending a text from a Blackberry. I don’t think that was his job phone, and he probably wasn’t responding to a service call. Eyes were not on the road.
I’m not bashing the fine VPD…because teenagers are the worst!!
My point is the police, who enforce traffic safety, should lead by example. BTW before cell phones were all service calls done at the station??? I know it’s only illegal in school zones, and I do use mine when I drive but limit usage because it’s DISTRACTING! Multitasker or not, it’s distracting, that’s why Rachel King ran a red light and had a collision with Jett McFalls.
Police or citizen, stay safe and use discretion with cell phones on the road;)

  • Let me add ....women in SUVs.

    November 21, 2009 at 4:54 p.m.
  • Actually hoppy, now that I realize it was a "joke", I'm still not amused.

No, we don't need any laws like Cali, those people have 0 freedoms these days. The more laws made, the more common sense is lost.

    November 21, 2009 at 4:54 p.m.
  • Hoppy, you do realize that part of law enforcements job is to respond to calls for service and by PHONE. If every cop that responds to these phone for service calls did it at the station, no one would be out on the street. And cell phone use is only illegal in school zone's at this time. What is your point that everytime you see a cop he/she is on the phone? So is the Fed Ex guy, or the bug man, or the mailman, and probably so are you.....

    November 21, 2009 at 4:48 p.m.
  • it’s MOSTLY women jabbering away on their cells and not paying one bit of attention to anything other than that phone conversation their having.

Seriously? I thought we moved past that...

    November 21, 2009 at 4:38 p.m.
  • Holly 1 said, When are people gonna wake up!!!! After they kill someone while gabbing on the phone?

Or putting on makeup, changing the c.d.,reading a billboard sign, talking to a spouse, scolding the kids in the back seat, looking in the rear view mirror....

Multitasking using common sense is easy for some, others simply use it as an excuse to try and get out of the situation. Everyone is distracted while driving in some way or another, but it is how you keep focused is the difference. Yes, some people should not drive and talk on cell phones or walk and chew bubble gum. Can you pat the top of your head and rub your belly? It's easy if you focus.

    November 21, 2009 at 11:44 a.m.
  • I was joking that the person King engaged in conversation with could have been a cop in another geographical location. I wasn’t saying McFalls was on the phone. Driving and dialing is dangerous, my point was that I see lots of law enforcement doing it.

    November 21, 2009 at 11:27 a.m.
  • don't be so hard on hoppy he or she was on the cell phone while reading the article. lol Just another reason that cell phones should be banned while driving. when driving your attention should be on driving nothing else. When are people gonna wake up!!!! After they kill someone while gabbing on the phone?

    November 21, 2009 at 11:16 a.m.
  • Please comprehend the material before responding.....King is the woman who was on the phone & hit Officer McFalls.

    November 20, 2009 at 9:45 p.m.
  • It’s probable that King was on the phone with another cop, every cop I see has a cell phone glued to their head while driving.
