A SWAT team found a sleeping couple and a suspected meth lab when they raided a Victoria County home Friday morning.

"They never even got out of bed," said Sheriff T. Michael O'Connor of the couple, who were detained.

The metal building at 281 Oliver Road was under investigation for a long time before Friday, O'Connor said.

The man and woman, identified as Kara Sierakowski, 22, and David Gainer Jr., 29, both of Victoria, were detained, O'Connor said.

They were charged late Friday with manufacturing and delivery of a controlled substance, possession and transport of a chemical with intent to manufacture, he said.

A crew from the Drug Enforcement Administration determined methamphetamines were being made in the small metal building, O'Connor said. The vapors were at toxic levels in the room where the drugs were being cooked, he said.

Officers remained at the house throughout the day to investigate.

Along with a borrowed Winnebago filled with SWAT team members and undercover cars driven by federal officers, O'Connor brought journalists to the Friday morning operation. The sheriff said he wanted to give the public a glimpse of tax dollars at work.

"If anything, I want people to feel good that we're on top of things," O'Connor said.

Several agencies, including the sheriff's office, the Victoria Police Department, the ATF, the DEA and federal marshals participated in the operation.

  • Those that know me, know I live a clean boring life - I play my guitar, sing, teach kids, run my shop, drink bottled water and I don't even smoke cigarettes, much less go near drugs.

I will say, that in the short time I was introduced to Kirk Gainer, last Wednesday night, I really liked the guy. The uncomplimentary picture they showed of his arrest, wasn't the same way that he looked, obviously they woke him up in the dead of sleep. I don't condone any of what he's alleged to have done, but my brief contact with him, echoed what another reader further down commented, and that is, he was very smart.

Intelligence and wisdom are two different things. Sometimes wisdom is something you have to learn the hard way through the mistakes made in life.

Personally, though I can't say I know Kirk, my few minutes with him, showed me that this man has a pretty good heart, he was willing to help me out on behalf of a friends request. I'm not happy that my truck is stuck there and I'm on foot at the moment, but I'll get by.

I hope that he does use this event as a catalyst to get clean, and learn from it, after he's paid the debt society has required of him. I find it hard not to be sympathetic, because although I have no close friends that have went through this drug, I have heard heartbreaking tales of bad choices, where the drug was so addicting that once they made that initial bad move it was almost too late. But for the grace of God, there go I.

I don't preclude anyone's choices or suggest that personal responsibility isn't the case, but it does not mollify the fact that meth is a hideously insidious drug for many, and sometimes, once or a few times is too late. I hope that from this all, what's left of his life will be salvageable, and he can turn it around.

But if you want change, you have to have it from the whole system, not just the cops, but from the judges who are supposed to pass the sentence as well. As someone who served on a jury last year involving the victimization of children, I was appalled by the application of the sentence at the discretion of the judge to a concurrent rather than consecutive sentence (effectively overruling an anonymous jury decision) for the offender who facilitated the tragic events. Since then, I cast a wary eye at who out there is really watching over us. Maybe we should look more closely at the judges we elect, because when justice for innocent kids isn't safely and fairly meted out, then we are all in trouble. It takes an effort from all sides, and we the people to hold those we put there in the judiciary accountable.

  • Freedom of speech is protected in the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights and is guaranteed to all Americans. I just want to make sure you caught the part that says it is guaranteed to "ALL" Americans, including myself.

    November 22, 2009 at 6:39 p.m.

  • legion,

I cannot speak for Zorro, but imagine that what he's talking about is something along the lines of alcohol prohibition requiring a constitutional amendment...

Perhaps if you could tell me which amendment justifies the war on drugs, that would be helpful...

    Thanks.

    November 22, 2009 at 6:33 p.m.

  • Sure Zorro, what's the gripe?

A search warrant was issued by a judge, the search occurred, evidence was found, suspects where detained and they will get their day in court.

    November 22, 2009 at 6:16 p.m.

  • Have you guys ever heard of The Constitution and The Bill of Rights?

    November 22, 2009 at 6:07 p.m.

  • congrats t mike, keep up the good work..

Zorro, i take it you cant find anyone to listen to you talk, so you get on here and showcase you high school vocabulary, Congrats man you questioning authority, wow, life well lived, " if only they got me down to the station" are you kididng. if they did be one less hater on the streets.

    November 22, 2009 at 5:28 p.m.

  • YAWN...Zorro! BORING!

    November 22, 2009 at 3:15 p.m.

  • PatientEarth, I had the misfortune of working with a dude that was cooking meth at some unknown location. He was eventually terminated and soon thereafter ended up DOA. His BO was unbearable and if anyone has ever smelled the fumes, they are unforgettable. The sad part of this is that the recipe for making meth is readily available on the net and elsewhere.

  • My spoof on this bust is grounded in legitimate questions. Twisting my words around and characterizing them as cop hater is a propaganda ploy. Just answer the questions if you have a good answer. If not, keep quiet and invoke you right to remain silent because anything you say in here will be used against you. I speak the truth in here and if it bites, stings or makes anyone uncomfortable, then I have succeeded. From all the personal and vicious attacks on me in here I can only imagine what would happen to me if they ever got me down to the station. You guys make us proud..........and afraid.

    November 22, 2009 at 11:51 a.m.

  • I,m sorry this zorro is such a disgruntal citizian , and i,m very proud of the cops for serving and proteting. Thank god we live in Texas!!!!!!!!

    November 22, 2009 at 11:26 a.m.

  • You have toxic fumes in the room where the meth is being cooked and because of this the only thing in print is a "Possible Meth Lab". Wish the thing would have blown up.

  • You know, the whole "not responsible for loss by theft, fire or accidents" sign takes on a sort of comic air within the present context.

    November 22, 2009 at 7:58 a.m.

  • get this scum off the street !

    November 22, 2009 at 12:42 a.m.

  • Ask some law enforcement officers who have dealt with meth influenced people.
Like people strung out on PCP. They have to be completely dead before the threat goes away.

    November 21, 2009 at 11:21 p.m.

  • I have known the suspect since he was about 11 years old. People have tried to help him over many years, but he isn't helping himself. I know this kid's parents and siblings and other relatives in town. He's a very smart young man who is making some enormously STUPID choices. There is an old AA saying that most addicts usually end up incarcerated, institutionalized or dead. Kirk is lucky he is only going to jail --

I am glad that another meth lab in our city/county has been put out of business! Others here have already stated, but I will repeat because people need to HEAR it -- Meth is a scourge on our young people! It's a horrible drug that is cheap, easily available, instantly addictive and DEADLY!

Do a web search for "Montanna Meth Project" and watch some of the PSAs that state has been airing. They will get your attention!

    November 21, 2009 at 9:58 p.m.

  • Onlooker: That zorro guys spends a lot of his time being wound up about law enforcement. It is pretty funny to read what he has to say. I am certain he has to be on some type of meds to control his twisted obsession for law enforcment, or we would always find him blogging about law enforcement related stories! OH WAIT?!? I do always see him blogging and bashing law enforcement! ZORRO, TAKE YOUR MEDS BUD!

    November 21, 2009 at 8:24 p.m.

  • If 50 is the new 30, then 30 is the new 50 on meth.

    November 21, 2009 at 7:33 p.m.

  • VBB,Think how big he use to be before he started his sideline business, his face is already skinny, the belly fat takes longer to leave. lol

    November 21, 2009 at 6:06 p.m.

  • Geez...he's 29?!?!!!???? I guess meth does age you quickly, I also thought tweekers were all skinny! He should add some Hoodia to the mix.....

    November 21, 2009 at 5:28 p.m.

  • Zorro, I guess the FBI was busy.

    November 21, 2009 at 1:11 p.m.

  • This Zorro guy really puts a lot of effort into the expression of his hatred of law enforcement. Dude, it's becoming comical. Do you have a counselor? If not, you really should seek that service, and get some meds to help you mellow out. Perhaps you're a law enforcment reject? It will be okay Zorro. Really.

    November 21, 2009 at 12:36 p.m.

  • I don't reckon that guy really knew WHAT he was making...

    Scary.

Of course, what do we expect to get from prohibition if not moonshiners?

    November 21, 2009 at 12:22 p.m.

  • Well I am just glad that they were caught and the stuff can be safely done away with. No one understands the true impact of meth until you deal with it first hand. My daughters dad is a meth addict and it destroyed his whole life including our family. Meth is a monster and turns the person or people using it into monsters so I think they were smart handling things the way they did. People on meth are lots of times out of control and do not know their own strength. When someone is walkin into a situation as such everyone has to be prepared for the unexpected. That's all.

    November 21, 2009 at 11:39 a.m.

  • I heard the sheriff say on tv that they had been doing intel on this place, and the people arrested, for a long time. How many law enforcement officers took part in this raid? I'll wait for the details, but it looked like they showed up expecting a big time international drug lab. If this turns out to be a mom and pop operation and all the guns and show of paramilitary force was just show business, well, I'm gonna be disappointed that so much law enforcement resources were squandered on this operation.

In an earlier Advocate story the sheriff had mentioned some people might think they were "Showboating." Exactly, that is exactly what I thought when I read about this and it was confirmed by what I saw on tv. There really is no business like show business! Exaggeration and embellishment just makes some of us ever more cynical.

"Several agencies, including the sheriff's office, the Victoria Police Department, the ATF, the DEA and federal marshals participated in the operation." Was this a training exercise or were all these officers just let in on the adreneline rush?

    November 21, 2009 at 11:20 a.m.

  • Patient, don't worry, Bubbles feelings are easily hurt. If one is not worshiping and praising our local P.D. then you are a hater.Good job of getting another tax evader off the street.

    November 21, 2009 at 11:13 a.m.

  • GOOD GOOD GOOD...the best news I all week. Another one down. And in our town makes it even better.

My sister is extremly addicted to this horrible monster of a drug. I have tried and tried to help her. It's just taken her over to a point of no return I fear. I pray for her every day and night. As well as all the others who have been taken by this monster.

I am sooo glad that one less is in our town! Way to go guys! Way to go!!!

    November 21, 2009 at 10:34 a.m.

  • I didn't think you were involved in all of that Sean I just felt bad because everyone could see your truck and that a white male was arrested which made bad publicity for you. I was hoping someone could put out some information to clear your name. I'm glad they finally got a picture of him up. They should have blurred the ads on your truck before broadcasting on television. It was very misleading. I hope this hasn't affected you or your business too badly. And good luck with the transmission.

    November 21, 2009 at 10:28 a.m.

  • And there the masked moron is once again...he just cant resist!

  • Great photo!

    November 21, 2009 at 9:40 a.m.

  • I'm Sean, owner of Rock N Blues. This is my truck parked there, my luck... It was there because I was referred to this guy by a friend/former student of mine who said he did Transmission work. I just met him like Thursday when he and that woman, showed at my shop, and they followed me to his place in that Jeep. As many of my customers know, my truck has been acting up lately and the transmissions slipping. This guy was supposed to look at it. This isnt good. I just was woken up by Pastor Don Tharp, who told me the news and that he recognized my truck on the news. Advertising's one thing, but this isnt exactly how Id like to be recognized. Hahaha.

  • It would be foolish to raid this lab without paramilitary operations. Err on the side of safety for all involved and don't take chances. Good job T.Michael and team!

    November 21, 2009 at 4:54 a.m.

  • "They never even got out of bed" Job well done VCSO.
But does this deserve a paramilitary operation?

    November 21, 2009 at 2:44 a.m.

  • Just one of many in the county.....

    November 20, 2009 at 10:36 p.m.

  • I just watched the report on fox and in the video was the Rock 'N' Blues truck parked in front of the building. Did anyone else see that? I'm not trying to spread rumors I'm just looking for a reality check
