HALLETTSVILLE - Potter Cherri Fryer needed extra room for her creations, so she decided to hold a sale and invite 100 of her friends, old and new.
The result is the inaugural Hallettsville Market Days on Saturday.
"After doing the market days circuit for awhile, I thought Hallettsville needs one of these, said Fryer, 51, a former marketing and communications professional.
Fryer said Hallettsville's location between Victoria, San Antonio, Houston and Austin makes it an attractive place to hold the event.
"It really kicks off the shopping season," said Fryer, who grew up on an Illinois farm and lived in California for 18 years before relocating to her husband Stuart Fryer's hometown five years ago.
"Plus in this economic downturn people are looking for ways to stretch their dollar. You can go to market days and find something unique at a reasonable price."
Ranging reporter Sonny Long sat down with Fryer at the Kountry Bakery in Hallettsville and chatted about the inaugural event.
Q: What makes Hallettsville Market Days unique?
A: It's a huge advantage to have the Knights of Columbus Hall. Being in the hall or under the pavilion or under some trees with shade is a big advantage. It's a private venture that is operated from a vendor's perspective. We want to make set up as easy as possible and tear down as easy as possible. That makes a big difference.
Q: So this is a private endeavor?
A: Yes, in cooperation with the Knights of Columbus which is selling burgers and beer. It's really not just a for profit venture for me, it's something bigger for the whole community. I've donated a lot of vendor spaces to nonprofit for fund raisers.
Q: How has the response been?
A: I expected it to start slow with the economy being down, but what I found was the opposite. As of Friday morning, we were at 105 vendors. I didn't dream we'd be over a 100 vendors for our first show. These are professional circuit vendors and artisans. It's not a garage sale.
Q: What types of merchandise can shoppers expect to find?
A: There's the whole art category - wood, metal, glass. We'll have jewelry, clothing, purses, those types of items. Live plants. Holiday items. Home decor. Fresh produce and a wide variety of specialty food items.
Q: What about food and beverages?
A: At 8 a.m. the Sacred Heart Booster Club will have a pancake breakfast. The Knights of Columbus will have burgers and beer.
Q:Anything else going on?
A: Los Kolaches, a collection of outstanding musicians from other bands, will play from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Q: How often do you hope to hold Hallettsville Market Days?
A: : Every quarter, on the third Saturday of February, May, August and November.
Q:Where can people get additional information about Saturday's Market Days and future ones?
A: Our Web site is www.Hallettsvillemarketdays.com or people can call me at 361-798-4545.
