New logos provide identities for schools

We were impressed with the logos for our new high schools: the Victoria West Warriors and Victoria East Titans.

We commend the Herff Jones company for providing good samples of logos. And we praise the art teachers from the Senior and Stroman campuses of Memorial High School along with students who tweaked the logos to get them just right for each school.

More tweaking will be done before the logos are finalized, according to Diane Boyett, the Victoria school district's communication specialist. But we can't imagine anything better at this point.

We think these logos certainly will separate the two high schools and give them identities to live up to.

Many in the community were concerned about the choice of colors not distinguishing each school well enough, but we think the logos accomplish the individuality of each school.

We look forward to seeing these logos during competitions that begin in fall of 2010, when both high schools open.

We think this is a wonderful fresh start for the Victoria school district and Victoria, and we believe that pride already is beginning to spread for these two high schools.

We wish both high schools, their students, faculty and staff the best.

Go Warriors! Go Titans!

  • The division line is now east and west rather than north and south. When the boundaries were drawn they looked at creating 2 schools with almost equal racial diversity. The 2 new schools were built with equal budget, each has a newer rich section and an inner city as well as some children from rural areas. Let the students take these new mascots and make their own history, build new traditions.

  • granted there were labels planted on the two old schools (one better than the other) The property values reflected that for years. Consolidation tried to remedy this. splitting them up again will undo this by again putting school against school. unless its required that students attend both schools during their years of education how can equality be addressed. who will establish who goes to what school? Will where you live decide this issue if so we will be right back where we were. As far as the logos are concerned how can some school ring company from out of town come up with logos that even fit our area they have no idea on what our history is. If you did some digging they most likely sent these same logos to many new schools. that saves them money by duplicating logos for their rings not because they are good ones for our schools. Lets get some logos that truely represent victoria not some bottom line of a ring company. I agree that the old logos have too much baggage but at least they were ours not some generic product given to us by a business more interested in making money than coming up with truely representative ideas from our history and culture.

  • You need to consider why they dropped the "history" names of Stingarees and Raiders. When Stroman was built, was it built as an equal to VHS or just something to please people on the other side of the tracks? In the years that I have been in Victoria when it was a 2 high school district, Stroman was always looked at as being beneath VHS. Yes, there may have been some good rivalries. But if these 2 new schools were to use the VHS, Stroman, Stinagarees, Raideres than one school would be "assumed" better than the other because of "their history". Please let the students of today start their own new traditions. Many cities have high schools that are named by location, ie... South High, Central High. People keep saying listen to the students, what do they want? The students voted on the colors and mascots. Neither group had an established color scheme so each one ended up having the same favorites. The color schemes were "tweaked" to appease some of the complaints and now there are even more!!!! VISD has needed new schools for 20 years. They (the state) have been telling us that with the growth curve we needed to be prepared and guess what, we weren't. Instead we listened to a few "power hungry" people who were sure we could win state in some athletic competition if we consolidated. Well, guess what it didn't work. By having these 2 new high schools the district is making steps to create smaller safer environments for our students and teachers. Fewer students per class will lead to greater learning experiences and hopefully more students will decide to stay in school. Please quit bashing everything the district does. Be positive, take a stand in helping it be successful. If there is a problem and you know how to solve it step and be a part of the solution.

  • Texican, agreed. I find it interesting that local powers will destroy the long histories of our schools on one front and use Victoria's history as a means of attracting tourists (and extracting tax dollars) on another. This tells me that our history only matters when a buck can be made. Hopefully, Victoria's history books will reflect this period of duplicity objectively and will accurately record the destructive legacies of the perpetrators. Sadly, if history tells us anything, the writers of our history books will be those with the powers to omit history's lessons. Will we continue to stand idly by while "their version" of history is written?

  • I'm with BSspotter. I hope that throwing all this money at the problem of sub-par education in Victoria actually has some kind of impact. Learning environment is important, but you have to have people in charge who know how to leverage it. Hmmm.

As far as the team names, I don't think you could come up with more generic names that have no regional identity. You can call Stingarees, Sandcrabs, and Gobblers corny and outdated, but there's something to having a name that identifies with the local area. Warriors? Titans? Sounds straight out of some Disney channel show.

  • I hope these "identities" somehow translate into better educations.
