Editor, the Advocate:

Thanksgiving time is again upon us. I would like to take this time to express my thanks to a lot of people. First, my parents, Donald and Claudine Breech, and my grandparents who instilled in me a desire to succeed and showed me that only through hard work and perseverance could success be achieved without being born into it. My mom and dad worked and sacrificed so their three kids could have as good a life and upbringing as possible.

To this day I believe that my dad could have done anything he set his mind to do. I am also thankful to all my teachers from the early days at Presbyterian Day School to Juan Linn, Crain Junior High and Victoria High School. I was lucky enough to go to school at a time when students respected teachers and teachers respected the students.

It was a time when students could be disciplined by teachers and principals without fear of the ACLU or lawyers interfering. You behaved in school and knew the value of education. I am thankful I grew up in Victoria in those times. I am thankful you could go to the store and leave your keys in the car and the doors unlocked knowing it was safe. I am thankful for the good times at the Uptown and El Rancho theaters that faced each other across De Leon Plaza downtown.

Downtown Victoria has not been the same since the banks took over the spaces where people used to come to see movies and visit with friends.

I am thankful to have known this town for what it was, and thankful for what it can still become. I am thankful for family and friends. May all your hearts and minds be filled with thoughts of your reasons to be thankful as we enter the holiday season. Thank your parents and teachers while you still can. Then thank the Lord that you are able to do so.
