GOLIAD - The annual after Thanksgiving Chili Cook-Off will benefit Goliad Silver Santa as well as local charities and the Memorial Scholarship fund.

The main fundraiser will take place on Saturday. It will also include a silent auction and bake sale that will help support the Goliad High School art club.

Organizers of the event, sponsored by Victoria and Surrounding Areas Chili Organization, chooses an organization or person to benefit each year.

Lisa Bone, president of V.A.S.A. spoke about the event.

Q: What is the chili cook-off?

A: Everything has to be made from scratch, and you have to cook it outside.

Q: What is CASI chili?

A: Chilli Appreciation Society International, V.A.S.A. pod is a chapter of CASI. You try to get points to participate in Terlingua International chili cook-off in Terlingua. The cook-off allows for VASA members to gain points and help raise money for local charities.

Q: Why did you chose to benefit Goliad?

A: We just wanted to help them, so they could help more kids.

Q: Who can participate?

A: Anybody who wants to come cook. We like to get the community involved. You don't have to be a member of CASI or V.A.S.A. pod to participate.

Q: Will you participate?

A: I will do CASI chili for three days, my husband will make fajitas. I'm not sure what else I may make.

Q: Does VASA pod make any profit from the event?

A: We don't make any money off the cook-off. All that money goes to our benefits. A lot of the time people will donate their prize to the charity.

Q: What do you want people to know?

A: You don't have to be a member to come out, cook and have a good time.
