  • What program costsTotal costs for the first five years of the PTA program are projected at $900,000, funded by tuition and fees, local tax revenue and state appropriations.

In other businessErnest Guajardo, a Victoria College board member of 14 years, resigned at last week's meeting.

The board motioned to approve Robby Burdge, a VC Foundation board member, to fill Guajardo's spot.

"I have a passion for education, definitely to provide students an opportunity for an education and also affordable education," said Burdge, who is also chairman for the St. Joseph High School Capital Campaign. "All we can do is provide them with an opportunity, and I think Victoria College does a very good job of doing that."

Guajardo said he will miss serving on VC's board.

"I've served on several boards, and I think this board here has been very educational to me and has been really good at keeping the budget down, trying to keep the tax rates as low as we can get it," Guajardo said.

The Victoria College will have a physical therapy assistant program starting in fall 2010.

The decision was approved at the regular board meeting Monday.

Sixteen students will be accepted its first year, said Laura Crandall, the newly hired director for the PTA program.

That number is expected to increase to an average of 20 students per year thereafter, Crandall said.

"There's a very high need in the community for physical therapy assistants, as well as physical therapists in the county, state and U.S.," Crandall said.

According to the Texas Labor Market data, there will be 230 annual openings for PTAs between 2006 to 2016. The nearest PTA program is at Wharton County Community College 50 miles away, VC said.

The program is currently in the process of accreditation through the American Physical Therapy Association, as well as applying for grants through the U.S. Department of Labor, Crandall said.
