1909

Nov. 28 - Howard Evarts Weed, the distinguished talker on town improvement and advancement, will be here on Dec. 13, so prepare yourselves for a treat. He comes most highly recommended, having talked in Michigan, Alabama, Ohio, Tennessee and many places in Texas.

David Stoner will leave Monday for Tivoli to take charge of the farming interests of the Refugio Land and Irrigation Company.

Victoria has asked for a statewide change of Arbor Day, Feb. 22, to Dec. 7, - Ben Milam's Day - so we think she had best get busy in arranging for a big initial celebration of it. Start the ball, Victorians. Let's hear from the school children, the teachers and trustees. One hour devoted to a general recognition of the day might prove to be in later years a proud hour to remember.

Nov. 29 - The Harrison Company will give its initial performance under its mammoth tent on the Fimbel lot tomorrow night, which will be the beginning of the week's engagement. May Mayfield, the business manager, who is a genial gentleman and as full of cordial business manners as an egg is of meat, has been here for several days arranging details for the popular show. The company will open their engagement in Mr. Chas. Harrison's four-act society comedy drama, "Away Down On The Suwanee River."

Nov. 30 - Manager Hauschild announced as his next attraction, "The Little Minister," the engagement to be for one night only, Dec. 2.

Dec. 2 - Joe Bianchi was awarded the blue ribbon for an exhibit of spurs at the DeWitt County Fair. Mr. Bianchi has built up a large trade for these articles, which is not confined to this immediate section. He received an order for six pair from a party in Oklahoma this morning.

Dec. 5 - Port O'Connor Boat Line: Boats leave Port Lavaca for Port O'Connor every afternoon after arrival of train from San Antonio and leave Port O'Connor every morning at 10 o'clock in time to catch train at Port Lavaca for San Antonio.

1934

Nov. 28 - The Dew Drop Inn, a restaurant and beer parlor on East Rio Grande Street, was burglarized of a quantity of merchandise last night. About 3:30 this morning, three unidentified young men staged a holdup in Allen's Lunch Room on North Main Street, but failed to secure anything of value.

Nov. 29 - Hester Evans, who is attending St. Edwards University, was of the three football players of the Tiger squad to be presented with a beautiful trophy by the Knights of Columbus for his accomplishments on the field at the recent McMurray game. The trophy consists of a large silver football on a bronze pedestal.

Dec. 2 - The first ice of the season and a heavy frost were reported in outlying sections this morning although the minimum temperature in Victoria was 35 degrees.

Dec. 3 - William Steubesand, file clerk in the office of the superintendent of the Southern Pacific Liners here, suffered painful injuries to his right side early last night when an automobile struck him as he assisted Mrs. Steubesand onto the curb at the intersection of Forrest and Main Streets.

Dec. 4 - Woodrow Wilson of Edna and Reinhard Stanzel of Schulenburg were elected co-captains for 1935 of the Victoria College football team at a meeting last night.

Dec. 5 - Robert Henry "Doc" Campbell has received a Christmas card from his brother, George J.C. Campbell, chief yeoman aboard the United States Battleship Augusta, the flagship of the Asiatic Fleet.

1959

Nov. 28 - Three county burglaries, all believed to have occurred Wednesday night, were being investigated Friday by the Sherrif's Department. Hardest hit was theh Lakeside Drive-Inn, located on Goliad Highway, where $160 was taken from the juke box and shuffle alley, with the amount including 15 cases of beer worth $70. Hit for the second time in four months was a service station-restaurant in Placedo, owned by Mrs. D.L. Clark. The burglars there only tampered with the entertainment machines and grabbed several candy bars and 17 cigars from the stores displays cases. The last in the trio of break-ins occurred at the Service Supply of Victoria Inc., 1319 Goliad Highway, where $25 in change was taken.

Dec. 2 - Ninety of Victoria's 100-odd service stations were reported participating yesterday in a gasoline price war that showed no signs of a break.

1984

Nov. 28 - The McNamara House Museum will present a children's program, "A Cowboy Christmas," from 1-4 p.m. Saturday. Parents are being asked to accompany their children to the program, which is sponsored by the Victoria Regional Museum Association.

Zion Tabernacle Christian Center, 602 N. Ben Jordan, will hold a four-night revival starting Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Each service will begin at the same time, but will feature different speakers. The Rev. Thomas Gibson, pastor, will speak on opening night. Other speakers will be as follows: Missionary Mildred Richard, Floyd Elder of Yoakum and the Rev. Carl Dailey of San Antonio. The theme is "Restoration of the Church."

Dec. 2 - The public will view the recently completed $5 million expansion at Citizens Memorial Hospital on Sunday. An open house, featuring tours of new private rooms, the lobby and medical facilities, will be held from 1 to 6 p.m.

Dec. 3 - A week and a half after revealing the discovery of a rare Spanish coin, the de la Garza one-half quartilla, an offical at the Presidio La Behia revealed Sunday the identification of an even more valuable coin. The Barria one-half quartilla may be the only one of its kind in the world, and its value to collectors is "astronomical," said archeologist Danny Agler of Rockport, about the most recent find.

A miscellaneous shower was given in honor of Roger and Debbie Geffert and sons, Jason and Ross, recently at the Yorktown Methodist fellowship hall. The ladies of the church served as hostesses. The family received various gifts, including a money tree. The Geffert family has recently moved to Victoria. Mr. and Mrs. Geffert lost their home in Yorktown to a fire.

Dec. 4 - The annual membership meeting of the Jackson County Farmers Market Association will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the auditorium of the Jackson County Services Building. Several administrative matters, including the election of board members and officers, plus a policy and bylaw review, will be completed during the meeting.
