For the past eight years, Ryan Smiga has been vegetarian and has worked out consistently.

"I've been told just as a vegetarian you can get vitamins," he said. "Sometimes it's just a money issue."

While the 32-year-old lacks protein because of his meat abstinence, he does receive the nutrient from nuts and soy products, he said.

"Vitamins are essential for a healthy living," said Kim Kurtz, DeTar Health and Fitness Center assistant manager. "Generally, a person's vitamin intake need is met through eating a balanced diet of vegetables, fruit and protein."

It is preferred that working out regularly and eating a balanced diet be tried before taking vitamins, Kurtz said.

However, some people with vitamin deficiencies because of an underlying medical condition can benefit from certain vitamins.

Unlike people who both live a vegetarian lifestyle and purchase vitamins, Smiga said he'd rather do one and not the other.

On top of eating healthy, Smiga runs close to 100 miles a week, he said.

"I eat mostly fresh, so that's expensive in itself," he said. "If you're getting it from that, why spend extra money on vitamins?"

Smiga's body feels better and he feels like his body is regulated, he said.

Kurtz suggests keeping in contact with doctors when taking any type of vitamins.
