SAN ANTONIO - Joseph Bargas broke his left arm during spring practice, but his right arm is just fine.
Bargas completed a pair of halfback passes, including one for a touchdown, to help Calhoun come away with a 35-28 Class 4A, Division II regional playoff win over Austin McCallum on Saturday night at the Alamodome.
"Coach (Richard) Whitaker told me to be ready and throw when I had to," Bargas said. "My eyes got big when I saw my receivers and I knew what I needed to do."
Bargas hooked up with Justin Ripple for 34 yards, and threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Loya on a reverse to help Calhoun improve to 10-3 and advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 1960.
The Sandcrabs will play Kerrville Tivy (8-4) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Heroes Stadium in San Antonio.
Calhoun caught the Knights (9-3) by surprise by throwing 15 times and completing seven for 115 yards.
"We didn't leave much in the bag," Whitaker said. "They're so athletic. They're so fast on defense and for us to line up and run right at them was going to be really difficult. We had to pull something out of the hat and the kids executed very well in the first half and got us a little lead and we held on there."
Calhoun gained 253 yards on the ground, but went to the air when it needed a big play. Bargas and quarterback Brandon Sanders combined to pass for 155 yards. Loya caught six passes for 114 yards and also ran six times for 66 yards.
"Usually you got to do the option," Loya said. "But with that defense they had you've got to pass that ball. They had awesome athletes. We have some pretty good athletes and we play with heart and that's how we won."
The Sandcrabs took the lead for good on running back Michael Mullins' second touchdown run and extended their advantage to 28-7 when Sanders scored on a 1-yard run on their opening possession of the second half.
But McCallum running back Michael Sorrells ran 70 yards for a touchdown on McCallum's next play from scrimmage and scored again on a 3-yard run to cut the margin to 28-21. Sorrells carried 14 times for 200 yards and also scored on runs of 36 and 14 yards.
McCallum quarterback Clete Donovan added 124 yards passing and 100 yards rushing.
But Calhoun got fumble recoveries from Joey Calzada and Tim Hicks and an interception by Albert Ureste. The Sandcrabs secured the win when Calzada recovered an onside kick with 1:30 left in the fourth quarter.
"This is a whole new football team from last year," Whitaker said. "People wrote us off very early. It wasn't about me, it was about the kids believing and they have felt all year long that we had a great football team and that's all that matters. If they believe it, that's what matters."

No, I am not absolutely positive. I am pretty sure we made it to the semis my junior year, which was 93. I thought in 94 we lost to Austin Westlake.
December 3, 2009 at 8:34 a.m.Matt are you sure about the dates? UIL archives have that the 93 game as VHS losing to Houston Mac 20 - 7. I thought the 94 game was when Garcia played. I remember the game and I know we lost by one point.
December 2, 2009 at 11:41 p.m.If memory serves, VHS played Aldine MacArthur in the state semis in 1993. The field goal was missed by James Garcia, who only missed one field either for that year, or possibly his HS career. James went on to play at Kansas State as a punter. He was a senior on the 1998 K-State team that came within a hair of playing for the national title. In possibly the best college football game ever, the Wildcats lost to Texas A&M 36-33, in double overtime.
December 2, 2009 at 11:26 p.m.GOOD LUCK SANDCRABS!
December 2, 2009 at 10:54 p.m.Just saw in UIL archives that VHS made it to the semifinals in 93 losing to Houston MacArthur. That was interesting.
December 2, 2009 at 10:48 p.m.I remember back in 94 VHS made it to Regional but lost by one point to SA Clark, 34-33. They played in Austin at UT stadium. We were in awe. VHS could have won but kicker missed a goal. So sad, but good game.
December 2, 2009 at 10:39 p.m.VHS played Houston Madison in the quarterfinals back in the mid 90's.
December 2, 2009 at 10:24 p.m.Help us out V.A., which one and when?
December 2, 2009 at 10:14 p.m.MHS never! I think VHS went pretty far in the early 90's. Don't remember how far though.
December 2, 2009 at 8:31 p.m.I have question. When was the last time M. H. S. Was in q-finals of H. S. football?
December 2, 2009 at 7:10 p.m.Calhoun can handle the rain, been there done that a few games this year (lol the Rainbowl game against Floresville) so I have all the faith in the world that our young men will go out there and play just as hard and as physical. I just hate the cold. Add rain and you have a perfect recipe for some sick kids come Monday.
December 1, 2009 at 4:10 p.m.It looks to be bad weather Friday. I have my snowboard gear ready with a fresh layer of scotchguard. Hand warmers and rain parka. I can't believe the U. I. L. Put a quarter-final game outside, with 8 teams left there should be plenty of time for 4 games in the dome. Pathetic actually.
December 1, 2009 at 3:46 p.m.hey Waddie check out San Antonio weather for Friday.....they are taking rain and/or snow lol
Btw, Thursday night after the parade, is a big pep rally hope to see ya'll all there supporting the black and gold.
dress warm and see ya at the game!!!!!!!!! Go Sandcrabs!!!!!
December 1, 2009 at 11:27 a.m.I hope this rain keeps up,because the crabs are undefeated in nasty weather this year. I believe it is deer season, sure would like a nice pair of antlers to hang in C. H. S. Trophy case. Go CRABS!!!

Iam going to reply to two post to me on this Blog,
First: Victorianbybirth
Yea I was born also, Gosh your a little harsh, calling me an idiot and all, Well, Is name calling allowed in the policy, Hum, Well did not mean to ruffle your feathers non, I will keep my Sandcrab comments where they belong, as I did not know the policy either, Now you have a great day.
Now for PatientEarth:
Well my comments were put there on purpose in your blog as your sports writers did not post much at all in the paper after the Mercedes game on the Sancrabs win. I think a very short paragraph and score was all that was there and no follow up the week after that game. Now, I pay to read and expect better coverage on our Sandcrabs in Calhoun County from the Victoira Advocate. There has been a long history of that problem here and not just in football. I could go on and on here, but it would have nothing to do with your blog So I will say,
I did not know the policy and my sports comments on the Sandcrabs will be in their proper place and sorry for bothering you in your blog. Now, you have a nice day and continue with your good articles.
December 1, 2009 at 7:38 a.m.Get use to it RL. Crab nation doesn't worry about one sided journalism any more. Let's see how long this stays posted. I thought the V. A. Was an area paper? I think they cover P. L. Sports but just a fraction. Or when we lose it's a big article. I hope that this is not considered ranting.

CORPUS CHRISTI — SAN ANTONIO — Whether the weapon is a potent air attack or a strong ground game, it’s becoming evident that it’s going to take a little more to win a postseason shootout against the Calhoun Sandcrabs. @Score HS NEW:Port Lavaca Calhoun35 Austin McCallum28 A week after allowing 361 yards and four touchdowns to Mercedes’ passing game, the Sandcrabs survived a 200-yard, four-touchdown rushing night by Michael Sorrels to beat Austin McCallum, 35-28 Saturday night in the Alamodome. Calhoun (10-3) has not advanced this deep in the playoffs since its 1960 trip to the state finals. The Sandcrabs will face Kerrville Tivy next Friday at Heroes Stadium for the regional championship and a berth in the Class 4A, Div. II semifinals. The Antlers post an 8-4 record but have averaged nearly 58 points in each of their three playoff wins. Michael Mullins and Brandon Sanders ran for a pair of touchdowns apiece Saturday night, and Justin Bargas hit Jeremy Loya on a reverse pass as the Sandcrabs took advantage of early turnovers. After the Knights scored on the third play of the game, Calhoun answered with 28 straight points before surrendering a 70-yard touchdown run to Sorrels on his first carry of the second half. McCallum committed three first-half turnovers, including fumbles at the Sandcrab 5- and 15-yard-lines and an interception of a screen pass by defensive tackle Albert Ureste near midfield. Trailing 28-21 with three minutes left, quarterback Clete Donovan threw back-to-back incomplete passes to give the ball back to Calhoun on downs, and the Sandcrabs needed to march just 24 yards to secure the victory. Sorrel’s final touchdown came with 1:30 to play and again made it a one-score game, but Sanders was able to run out the clock.
Group6. You heard right. These young men have an abundance of heart. There is no quit in this team. This group ,to me,shows what teamwork is and should be about. The coaches and players have done an outstandig job getting this team to gel together. Come on out to watch and see if it is true. You will not be dissappointed but will be impressed.
November 30, 2009 at 4:10 a.m.GO CRABS!!!
good luck friday night sandcrabs !
November 29, 2009 at 11:42 p.m.They tell me those kids gotta a lot of heart down there in Calhoun County! Keep it up young men, ya'll make me proud to be from South Texas! Congratulations, and good luck against Tivy.
November 29, 2009 at 11:36 p.m.Home and home versus Cuero would work Waddie. Re-alignment's are two year agreements anyways.
I just know now is the time coaches are lining up non-district opponents on a re-alignment year. Coach Whitaker has more important issues currently I understand, but---if he could just put himself a post-it note up in his office and get this agreed to with Coach Reeve after the Crabs and Gobblers win state, us high school football fan's would be grateful.
November 29, 2009 at 7:15 p.m.Calhoun. vs. Cuero. sounds good. We could switch home games each season, and Its a nice drive. No need for a neutral site.
November 29, 2009 at 6:48 p.m.Point taken YT. I think that after the sharpstown game we don't under estimate any one team or player. Which has been to our advantage. I know K. T. 's. Q B is awesome but it takes 11 players, not one player to make a team was my point. R. W. Needs to take more credit for what he has acomplished at Calhoun. As for the McCallum parents who don't want to drive long distances, you got your wish. I would drive across state lines to see my Crabs play...a loyal fan will follow.
November 29, 2009 at 6:39 p.m.New UIL re-alignment this Feb. Teams can reschedule none district opponents. Coach Whitaker, a Cuero/Port Lavaca match up in 2010 would be awesome.
Heck, schedule it on a Saturday, neutral site of Memorial Stadium, and watch 'em come from all over.
November 29, 2009 at 4:59 p.m.First full disclosure, I'm not a life-long Calhoun county resident or a life-long Sandcrab fan; in fact at one point in my life they were the opponent. I considered myself a purist, a lover of high school football and tried to attend the games as an unbiased observer, in the beginning at least. That being said, having lived here for several years and attended many games I can say without hesitation I am very proud to wear the black & gold and catch as many games as possible, including all the playoff games this year. It has been said in other comments so allow me to chime in, this team plays with heart. Obviously no one told the players they were rebuilding or that they wouldn't make it very far this year. This is a team of champions no matter the final outcome of the season; these players have the heart of champions. This is a testament to the players, the coaches, and the fans. Last night in the Alamodome it was never more evident that "Crab Nation" loves their team.
November 29, 2009 at 1:24 p.m.According to some other comments I have been fortunate to avoid having to attend a game at Victoria's memorial stadium. Maybe someone from Victoria could attend some games at Floresville, Kingsville, and yes, even the Alamodome where people are welcomed and treated with due respect. Typical Victoria attitude even comes through at sporting events.
Finally, I will travel to San Antonio to watch next Friday as the Sandcrabs beat Tivy and I challenge every other Calhoun fan to do the same. Even if you are not a Calhoun fan but are a football fan you will be treated to one fantastic experience.
GO CRABS
oh Scout I don't plan on selling anything. But there are places here in Port Lavaca and in Victoria sell Calhoun gear. But I ample t-shirts and football gear :)
November 29, 2009 at 1:20 p.m.mmgriff, as for selling items..DO NOT sell anything at the game venue. Spread the word.
Otherwise I need a shirt too!!
November 29, 2009 at 12:37 p.m.YTDogs, I sure do. Everything here is black and gold. So glad you made the trip to see our team play. Hope you really enjoyed the game and hope to see you Friday night.
Scout, you are so right. As a parent of a football player, I get to see and hear about what goes on before and after the games. I can tell you that Coach Whit is more than just a coach to these young men. He is a leader. He cares about these young men. Not just on the field, but off the field as well. All of our "Nation" coaches do. This past spring was our first spring training camp. Coach Whit and the other coaches were there every minute with those boys teaching, helping, and guiding them. During the summer, we have Champions Course. This brings all of our athletes together. One big happy Sandcrabs family. These coaches give their time, their days, and their nights to mold these boys not only into football players, but into the type of young men they can be proud of.
So to our "Nation" coaches......thank you. For your time, for sharing your knowledge with out young men and for caring.....To our Sandcrabs.....drive, determination, and dedication....with these anything is possible.
November 29, 2009 at 12:13 p.m.Congratulations to the Calhoun Sandcrabs!! Great game by the team. Now "Tivy" one game at a time, you can do it crabs. Focus, committment, dedication, determination, and HEART. The winning combination for next week. Good luck next week CRABS.
November 29, 2009 at 11:14 a.m.mmgriff, got a black and gold Crab shirt for a area fan of ya'lls?
Tivy is gold and blue, and I'm afraid my Bulldog blue might make some on your sideline think I'm on the wrong side Friday:)
November 29, 2009 at 10:45 a.m.Congrats on a great win and a great game last night Sandcrabs. You have broke the "9" curse. I love going to the Dome to see you play. The excitement and the energy fills the place. You all played with so much heart, so much determination I knew you ALL could do this.
I spoke to a McCallum parent and fan last night after the game and was totally shocked. They told me that they were glad to take a loss so they didn't have to travel any more. I didn't know what to say, my mind was trying to process the fact that I know as a parent I want my son to achieve his dreams, his goals, and the goals of his teams.
Coach Whit....This season was just as much about you as the team you lead. I have been told countless times by my son that you told them at the beginning of the year, if they will listen you will teach them to win. You have instilled in these young men that it takes a TEAM to win. No one person can win a football game.
Last but certainly not least, I was challenged last night...challenged by a CHS football player...to bring Sandcrabs Nation to Heroes Stadium next Friday night. To fill the stands will the nothing but black and gold. So to all the "Nation".....get your tickets, make that drive, and help OUR team.
GO Sandcrabs!!!!!!!!!!
November 29, 2009 at 10:24 a.m.How Exciting! You boys are amazing and play with so much heart! We can see you are hurting and you line up and do it again, with more determination than ever! WAY TO GO SANDCRABS!! BRING IT to Heroe Stadium next week.
November 29, 2009 at 9:54 a.m.It's called giving respect Waddie, that's all. If you have seen the Tivy QB play, he's earned it. By no means did I imply PL would lose cause of him, but---I said he will have to be respected. The Crab secondary can not EVER assume their receiver will not get the ball. Once they do, Manziel will chunk him the ball.
McCallum fan's didn't give your team respect based on post's I seen in the Austin American Statesman, and I think your team had some bulletin board material because of it.
November 29, 2009 at 9:39 a.m.Way to go crabs!we knew you could do it. I don't care how good K. T. 's aback is. We won against 3 great qbacks in last 3games. Let's go CRABS!!!!!
November 29, 2009 at 9:17 a.m.Way to go Sandcrabs
November 29, 2009 at 9:07 a.m.Here's some info on Kerrville Tivy. Just for your pre-game knowledge "Nation Fans". Can't wait for this one.

November 29, 2009 at 9:06 a.m.CONGRATS 'CRAB NATION!! Snake that was entry!
Coach Whitaker is a hot commodity. The Champions program in the summer, the off season programs for both sexes is what every school wants. The pride of your county is evident. Your supporters at the games is true black and gold. Where do they all come from?!?! lol. Dont loose him for material things. You would hate to see him come in with red and black.
Do not get distracted. Coach will have some stricter rules this week. Follow them. Reinforce it to the players, parents and student body. I am very happy for you guys!!
Be loud and proud -- 'CRAB NATION!
November 29, 2009 at 9:04 a.m.Great post Snake.
November 29, 2009 at 8:48 a.m.Awesome job Crabs. Congrats to you and "The Nation". Loud and proud is what I heard from ya'll in the Dome.
I also caught ya'lls opponent on Friday over at Heroes. Tivy QB, Johnny Manziel is very talented. He can scramble, avoid would be tacklers and find a receiver who always seems to come open deep.
Don't be fooled by the score versus MV, 45-31. Wasn't that close. Manziel didn't play the second half, and MV had some luck getting those several onside kicks. Tivy played numerous back ups in the 2nd half. Class act by their coach I might add.
I know "The Nation" will pack that lovely new SA stadium---Heroes. Edge for crowd support goes to Port Lavaca for sure. Very impressed. Glad my first PL game was this exciting.
Congtrats to McCallum too. Both teams played with controlled emotion and really excited us fan's.
Next Friday's game will be another can't miss game for a high school football fan. So glad your playing on Friday, so I can catch this one, then Cuero/Gilmer on Saturday.
Hat's off to "The Nation".
November 29, 2009 at 8:45 a.m.I was 12 years old when my wife's golf buddy and my good friend, Bobby Goff, took the Sandcrabs all the way to the State finals at UT's Memorial Stadium in Austin in 1960. My sister was a Senior and a Cheerleader for Calhoun, so we went to almost all the games. We missed the quarter final game with Sequine I think it was, but we went to all the rest of the games, including all the regular season games. The team that defeated the Crabs in the state finals turned out to be the beginning of a high school football dynasty in Gordon Wood at Brownwood and his star receiver later made all american with Baylor and went on to play in the pros, Lawrence Elkins. Also, the guys I know that played on that team, today will tell you that it was not their best game. The score doesn't tell the whole story. Calhoun was still a good match for Brownwood that night, 49 years ago. If they'd played like they did the week before against Cleburne in the semifinals it might have been a different story. I know it was one of the best highschool teams I've ever seen. They were big and they were fast. But that's another story from another time.
Now Fast Forward to December, 2009. It's been 49 years since we've been this far. This is great, not only for our county and our beloved high school, or the football players. I contest the naysayers who think that school sports are a waste of time and that they serve no purpose other than to distract the kids from more important things. I say that highschool sports, and most importantly, football is as important as anything else. I say every school system should put forth every resource and effort to achieve a winning football program. A winning program has a positive effect on student moral and encourages every student to do better, not only physically, but above all, mentally and achieve higher academic excellence. And I say football because it's the first big sport in the school year, and a good record in football will bleed over into other sports and will produce winning records in sports and other activities all school year long, which will increase moral and increase student productivity. It gives the kids a reason to go to school and try harder, because it makes them want to belong to a winning institution, an be winners in life. And that's what it's all about! Every activity should strive to enchance success in Academics and skills to provide an education that will prepare all of the students and help give them a better opportunity for a bright future, and high school sports do this. It's all in attitude, and a winning sports team gives them a positive attitude. For the players, it encourages good, clean, competition and instills pride in them they wouldn't have otherwise. For the non player student, this pride rubs off and they have a better moral and attitude to do their best in all aspects of school. Thus both student athlete and student supporter do better in life.
November 29, 2009 at 7:52 a.m.That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!
Awesome job Sandcrabs! It's a GREAT day to be a Sandcrab!
November 29, 2009 at 5:45 a.m.FYI: According to the High School Coaches Assoc. website, they will play for REGIONAL Champs next week. http://www.thsca.com/documents/2009%2...
Well...well...the young team in the season of rebuilding...not expected to make it far in the playoffs....Look at you now!!! So glad those early predictions were wrong! Way to go Sandcrabs...now on to win over Kerville Tivy next Friday night! You can do it...pretty evenly matched...watch that quarterback...and you should be sitting pretty in that one.
November 29, 2009 at 4:29 a.m.Congratulations!
Way to go!!!!!!
