1: Why did you choose the industry?
My mom taught me years ago and I love animals. I've been doing this for a long time.
2: Describe your first day in business.
It was good. I liked it. After working with my mom, I went on to work with Northside Ranch Pet & Garden Center and then with Petagree. Petagree's owner later asked if I wanted to buy the business.
3: Describe a typical workday.
I come in at 8 a.m. and groom about 15 dogs a day by myself. I know the cuts and can usually get them done pretty quickly. Some don't cooperate and take a little longer. I leave when I'm done, sometimes at 5 p.m., sometimes not until 6 p.m. Fridays are the worst.
4: Why open up shop in the Crossroads region?
I lived in Edna, but moved here. There's a lot of people around here with pets. Good business.
5: Is it difficult to find employees in our workforce? How do you find workers?
I don't need employees right now, but I've had customers tell me to keep them in mind if I ever need more help
6: What advice would you give others starting a new business?
If you really, really like what you're going to do, go for it. It's worth it.
7: What is the biggest challenge your industry faces?
My biggest challenge is just trying to keep up with the work. During the slow times, however, it's trying to get customers in here.
8: What is something most people don't realize about running a small business?
All the little things you have to pay. We have a credit card machine and it costs us extra to use it. I didn't realize that before. But that's OK. Other people have got to make their money, too.
9: In your time running your business, what is your best story?
I had a person come in once with a dog that was full of ticks. You couldn't see the dog under all of them. They told me they'd let someone borrow the dog and it came back with the ticks. I'm not sure I believe that, though. We got most of them off and got it shaved down to where they could medicate and make the dog feel better.
10: Where do you see yourself and your business in five years?
I think we'll multiply and I'll get people in here to help me. Now I'm semi-busy and it's hard to train somebody. I'll have to do it when things are slow.
