Following a 35-win season and its first NAIA National Softball Tournament appearance training begins on Monday for the University of Houston-Victoria softball team with fall practice.
Only five players return from a team that hit .328 and saw its pitchers combine for a 2.05 ERA. This year's team will have 11 new members practicing this fall and could see two new players start after the winter break.
"I think our program has a very solid foundation, but it is never going to be easy to keep it up when you have such big turnovers in players," said UHV head coach Keri Lambeth. "We are going to miss all the girls that graduated last year, but I think we have a strong recruiting class."
The Jaguars, who were 35-12 last season and won the American Independent Institution tournament championship, will practice from Monday through Thursday until the end of the semester in December to prepare for the program's third season.
Tasha Rotramel went 12-5 with a 1.64 ERA and was named an all-American as a junior and returns as the ace this season. Infielder Brittany Boren and Izzy Glowney return from successful seasons along with catcher Brittany Faas and utility player Claire McGee.
"This is a big chance for the five returners to show that they are the team leaders and help our new players develop," Lambeth said. "They are already coming into that role already, but with they can use this time to really help the new girls."
Without the benefit of playing other teams in the fall, Lambeth said the Jaguars will have to adjust and stay focused to maintain their competitive edge. She said the team will have voluntary workouts on Fridays during the fall and should come into the regular season in playing shape with the practice schedule this fall.
"We'll have a shorter break this year from when we take our break and when we actually start playing games," Lambeth said. "With no fall season to cut back on budgeting, it could be difficult to get it going, but I think we'll be able to handle it. I think we'll come in prepared for the spring."
