WESTHOFF - The Westhoff School District is looking for more students to enroll at the Westhoff School.
The school, located in DeWitt County, has 38 students ranging from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.
"I just want to have as many students as we can," said Paddy Burwell, school board president. "The students are in a safe, good environment, and get one-on-one teaching. It's a good school."
The school, rated exemplary last year, can take up to 100 more students, Burwell said.
The average student-to-teacher ratio is about five students per teacher, said Superintendent Donnie Garrison.
This year, about 40 percent of students come from outside school districts, such as Nixon-Smiley, Cuero, Yoakum, Yorktown and Gonzales, Burwell said.
Unlike other schools that charge for having students enroll from outside school district, Westhoff school is free, Garrison said.
In addition, the students have much of their school supplies paid for. Each summer, the Parent Teacher Committee conducts a fundraiser for school supplies, raising about $12,000 a year.
"Everything goes back into the school," Garrison said. "We're going to put a pavilion over our playground equipment. We'll start building it next month. It'll take about a month to complete."
Intramural sports such as flag football, volleyball, basketball and track are also available for students in grades fifth through eighth, Garrison said.
Westhoff school athletes compete against other area schools similar in size, such as Vysehrad, Sweet Home, Ezzell and Meyersville.
"It's fun for them," Garrison said. "It's something a little different than just doing P.E. The kids have a good time and get to meet kids from other schools."
Westhoff's population in 2000 was 410.
