David Koechner is on the cusp — he's an actor who has appeared in nearly every successful Hollywood comedy of the last decade, yet most would ID him as, "Oh, he's ... that guy!"

"That guy" is the guy in "Anchorman" (cowboy hat-totin' sports reporter Champ Kind), the guy in "The Office" (boorish sales rep Todd Packer) and the guy in "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," ''Snakes on a Plane" and "Saturday Night Live" — just check his IMDb.com page.

Koechner, who began his acting career in Chicago's improv scene in the late '80s, now stars opposite Kelsey Grammer in the ABC sitcom "Hank." The premiere episode last Wednesday scored decent ratings, winning its 8 p.m. EDT time slot.

We spoke to Koechner on Monday night.

Q. When people on the street recognize you but don't know your name, they say, "Hey, you're that guy from ..." What movie or TV show follows the ellipses?

A. It's "Anchorman" and "The Office." And I've only done five episodes of "The Office," and two of them I was off camera. Now they go, "You're the guy from 'The Office!' "And they'll say "Talladega Nights" a lot of times, even though it was a small part. "Waiting ..." gets a lot of street cred.

Q. This year, you've appeared in no less than 11 TV and film projects. Life in Hollywood is pretty nice at the moment, right?

A. I will say this: I'm a very fortunate person because the job I have now (the ABC sitcom "Hank") is 10 minutes from my house. I leave my driveway, take two freeways and one exit and I'm in the studio. I work on a four-camera sitcom, which is the greatest job in show business, and I work with oneof the greatest sitcom actors in television history (Kelsey Grammer). So, it's pretty good.
