EDNA - The Jackson County Youth Fair was a swirl of dust, mooing, clucking and silent children calming their nerves before project judging.
This year marked the 60th anniversary of the fair and the first time to be held in the Brackenridge Main Event Complex.
More than 200 animals were entered in the livestock and poultry categories with 185 to be sold. There were also 30 entries in the commercial heifer category entry with 24 to be sold.
"I knew all along I was going to make it," said 10-year-old McKayla Marthiljohni, in line for heavy-weight judging. This was her first-year animal, a heavyweight lamb, was bigger than her.
"It takes a lot of responsibility," she said as she held her lamb, Pistol, by his head. "It's been a job all year."
McKayla is no stranger to competition. She's been barrel racing since she was 4 years old, but the show had her a bit nervous.
Resting in the pens on the other side of the complex was the Adams family and pig, Domino.
"We just keep her happy until the show," said James Adams, an 11-year-old from Vanderbilt, of his project.
For the Adams family, the event brings them closer together.
"We love spending time outside, we love spending times in the country," said Cynthia Adams, James' mother. "It's a family affair."
The fair will continue until Saturday and will include a carnival, lumberjack show, petting zoo and auction.
