Ranging Reporter J.R. Ortega stopped by Japaleno's Cafe to see what Crossroads residents would like to see come to Victoria that would help boost local interest and job growth.
A: "I think that the city should have a nice Tejano club. We have a lot of Tejanos here."
Ophie Sanchez, Victoria, Atzenhoffer title clerk
A: "We need more industrial business. It employs more people and would definitely help."
Raymond Garcia, Victoria, retired
A: "There's nothing to do here. They should add some new stores in the mall, like Macy's."
Blanca Guerra, Bloomington, housewife
A: "I think something like the water park would be interesting for the kids. It would definitely be a step in the right direction."
Jaime Aguilar, Victoria, DOW operator

lol, I guess only food establishments.
October 15, 2009 at 7:52 a.m.We need a few more Mexican Food eaterys and convience stores. I think there still a few intersections without one of them on each corner.
"Nice" and "tejano club" are not two words that go together. "Stabbing" and "shooting" are more in line.
Like the previous poster, the market will bring us only what we will support. The reason we don't have those "nice" things is because we don't support them when they are here.
Industrial, distribution, or light manufacturing should be the Chamber of Commerce's focus for a better Victoria and better paying jobs, IMO.
Try Sky, or Greeks Bros for your steak, BTW.
October 13, 2009 at 10:09 p.m.Wordup...You are right about the Family Table. The problem I have going there is that I usually go alone at lunch from work and I sometimes need to be wheeled to the car. Then, when I get back to work, I very badly need a NAP! Their fried chicken is as good as Grandma used to make. When the weather gets a little cooler, they have chicken'n'dumplings as their special. The vegetables are very good and they offer a large variety -- not just fried potatoes, mashed potatoes, or baked potatoes. Cabbage, candied yams, black-eyed peas, corn, green beans, cornbead, iced tea. Oh, man, I'm gonna hafta go tomorrow!
October 13, 2009 at 6:15 p.m.Whatever the market will bear.
October 13, 2009 at 2:15 p.m.Allfiredup have you tried The Family Table? They are only open for lunch, but it sounds like what you are looking for.
October 13, 2009 at 2:01 p.m.I would like to see some kind of healthfood eatery. One that uses strictly organic, healthy food cooked from scratch, and maybe a grocery section where specialty foods can be bought. Foods without additives!!!
October 13, 2009 at 11:02 a.m.People with food allergies have a hard time shopping in any of the grocery stores in Victoria, and forget about eating out anywhere. It takes hours to find a few products that are safe to eat and labels can be so deceptive.
The healthfood stores that are already there are nice, but there's not enough selection.
I would like to see a nice steak house. I remember Victoria had some good ones back in the 80's. Maybe a Salt Grass, Outback, or something along those lines...
October 13, 2009 at 8:42 a.m.I'm hoping to open up a little game store in November, but I'm also working on doing online shows for my youtube channel. Basically, youtube will pay you money if your account is in good standing, biding by their policies, and your site brings in alot of people.
My idea is to do a show from Victoria. I would organize a mobile underground private exclusive club, and film the people inside. Asking questions, talking to people, and just recording what goes on inside. The club would be done classy, and people would be selected at random. Only those who are attractive, interesting, and what we consider quality people would be considered. No trashy stuff, no crime, no mess. There would still be an entrance fee, but only those selected would be allowed inside.
It would be an online production company, except its going to be an extension of game business. I'm hoping to use the show as an advertisement tool to both draw in people and sell advertisement spots.
So would Victoria like that kind of businesss? If it was successful it might lead others in Victoria to create their own online production company.
October 13, 2009 at 8:05 a.m.1. I want a restaurant that serves home-style meals with real vegetables, not fried everything. A sample meal might include pork roast, rice and gravy, black-eyed peas and collard greens. Do not offer me Furr's...they NEVER change their vegetables and they are all out of a can.
2. I would enjoy going out to a real piano bar. Victoria has only two types of bars...country western dance and sports. Loud CW music and games is not my idea of night life. Not all bars have to be smoke filled (thank goodness we don't have this in Victoria anymore) and noisy.
October 13, 2009 at 6:19 a.m.Victoria isn't keeping decent stores out...the decent stores don't see Victoria as a viable location.
October 10, 2009 at 5:21 p.m.More family oriented businesses. Like a waterpark and family oriented restaurants. Like cracker barrel. The mall needs to be torn down and brought up to par. I hate the victoria mall. The stores all but the main ones come and go. We need a mall that will attract families. Victoria needs a toy store too. Victoria also needs GROCERY stores to bring down the prices on groceries. Walmart and HEB are too cocky. Victoria wants everyone to buy here and they don't have anything. Even when you get a decent store they don't keep their shelves filled so again you have to travel out of town.
October 9, 2009 at 9:52 p.m.I would think with the canal, dock/port, rail lines, and cross road location Victoria would be a great site for a department store warehouse, food chain warehouses, and etc.
October 8, 2009 at 2:55 p.m.I am aware that Houston's port has most of this business, but it is overcrowded and transportation is slow.
Even a single large warehouse to handle a corporations imports for example Wal-Mart, would increse jobs. It would allow for additional expansion of truck stops and etc.
The Victoria Mall is in need of serious renovation and expansion. It is time to add on or even rebuild a new, larger mall. This would attract many out of towners as wellas keep alot of locals from traveling to Houston or Austin just to be able to shop at the latest stores that most malls offer. The water park may attract people, but on will be seasonal. Victoria really does not offer anything year round to make the city attractive to others.
October 8, 2009 at 2:52 p.m.a nice nightclub where you could take your wife or girlfriend to sit and have a drink or two and not have to wear earplugs! A place where you wouldn't have to worry about being shot or stabbed by some bald headed gangster!
October 8, 2009 at 2:38 p.m.Victoria needs something more that a Tejano club! Those type of clubs are not good here, they seem to attract criminals!
October 8, 2009 at 2:33 p.m.There actually is a nice tejano club. You should check out dos amigos nightclub. It's not the biggest, but they know how to have a good time.
October 8, 2009 at 12:14 p.m.Amusement park, Engineering firm, assembly plant
