YOAKUM -- Cuero running back Trent Jackson knows exactly what makes playing Yoakum special.

"It's a rivalry," Jackson said. "I used to watch my brother (Josh) play them. I always wanted to play Yoakum.

"They're 12 miles away. It's just a dream come true to play Yoakum." Jackson and the Gobblers made sure the dream had a happy ending by rallying for a 26-23 win in the District 28-3A opener for both teams on Friday night at Bulldog Stadium.

No. 6 Cuero (6-0, 1-0) never led in the 99th meeting between the two teams until quarterback Tyler Arndt threw his second touchdown pass to Ryan Barrientez with 48 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

"We just had to come out and play Cuero football," Jackson said. "We came off of a bye week and we had to get back into football.

"They are a great football team. They did what they had to do. We just played a real good football game."

Jackson did his part by rushing 31 times for 247 yards and scoring on runs 5 and 47 yards. He rushed for 222 yards and four touchdowns in last season's 49-14 win.

"He's a big-play guy," Arndt said. "When we're one play away from it, we hand the ball off to him. We have great confidence in him.

"He's going to be there for us and he was tonight."

The running of Jackson and the passing of Arndt helped the Gobblers overcome a 16-point third-quarter deficit while extending their winning streak over Yoakum (2-4, 0-1) to eight games, and improving their district record under coach Mark Reeve to 29-0.

"You got to give a lot of credit to Yoakum and you've got to give our kids a great credit," Reeve said. "They overcame a lot of adversity. Whatever could go wrong, went wrong.

"That's the mark of a really great football team. We've got some great leaders on it and the kids just kept making adjustments and never quit. If you never quit, you always have a chance to win."

The offensive line and running back Trey Hights gave the Bulldogs a chance to break the streak. Hights carried 28 times for 195 yards and scored on runs of 1 and 37 yards in his final game against Cuero.

"Our offensive line has been that way all year long," Yoakum coach Brent Kornegay said. "They've done a good job and Trey runs well. I'm real proud of their effort. We knew it wasn't over until it was over, and that's just the way it is."

Jackson got the Gobblers' comeback started by running around the right side and somehow managing to stay in bounds before reaching the end zone for his second touchdown with 29 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Gobblers pulled within three points when Arndt threw a strike to Barrientez in the end zone on a fourth-and-goal from the Yoakum 28-yard line with 6:14 remaining in the fourth quarter.

"It's not like what we drew it up to be but good teams find a way to win and we did that tonight," Arndt said.

"We stuck with what's right. We stuck to the plan and luckily we were able to come out on top."

Jackson ran six times on Cuero's decisive drive before Arndt found Barrientez at the 3 on a slant on a third-and-nine from the 14, and the receiver bulled his way into the end zone.

"I just kept moving my feet," Barrientez said, "I knew I had to score. We just picked the intensity up, played as a team and played for each other, and came out with the win."

The Gobblers wrapped up the win when Colton Jacobs and Mason Rickman sacked Yoakum quarterback William Markert on the final two plays of the game.

"It was a special one," Jackson said. "You had two great teams. It was just like a state football game."

NOTES: GOING GREEN -- Cuero leads the overall series 65-28-6...

TALE OF TWO HALVES -- Markert was 6 of 8 for 108 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown pass to Jeffery Harrison in the first half. He went 2 of 7 for 5 yards in the second half and left the game briefly after spraining his ankle...FRUSTRATED GOBBLERS -- Cuero punted only once, but had two turnovers and failed to score twice from inside the Yoakum 20.

  • Well I have been hearing about all of this for days, and I had to get on here to look and read!! Of course my first thought ( after laughing by butt off)was oh how childish can grown people really be over a FOOTBALL GAME!!!! A team won and team lost. Big friggin deal, for all of this crap that is being dished out back and forth, putting down people for their opinion, hello this is a newspaper, can we say freedom of speech?? Come on really, let these 2 teams which BOTH did a great job and played a good game to have it all brought down to , complaining about cheerleaders with several stories about diff reasons they didn't make it to Yoakums side!! Anyone remember a cheerleader being tripped one year when they did go to the other side?? This is to funny all the names , zebra's, turkey's ( thank you for that one we are proud of our turkey's)! It was a really close game and that is not good enough? I went to school in Cuero and I went to school in Yoakum, and I also went to school at Victoria High, who when I went their as much as I loved the school the teams I think lost every game! Yoakum and Cuero have always been known as rivals, use to be friendly rivals, but nope all the adults are bringing it down to accusations, blame game, downing everyone!! Is this really what you want these kids to hear and learn about? We do stick with our team Cuero Gobblers win or loose, luckily we have had many good teams and years of them:) So it comes down to some music and refs are the reason Yoakum lost?? To Think I once went to school there and actually was proud at the time, but all this, no thanks, so not proud at all! Well I take that back I am Proud of Yoakum's team and how well they did play and were all talking afterward, now the fiery on here because of the loss, so not proud of that! Poor Kids in Yoakum I really do feel for you and will keep you in my prayers that if or when you play your next game, the adults take it alto better!! Oh no I am for sure not ashamed to add my name! Tammy Moore Thornton! Former bulldog,Gobbler & Stingrays!! God Bless Cuero for our Faith in God!! God Bless & Be with all the surrounding teams this Friday!! Hopefully the kids can ignore this nonsense and enjoy there game!! :)

  • Yes it is a game and it was a very good one..But they are steadily bashing Cuero..It went out first with we tried to take out qb then the refs were unfair then the music...I mean really I respect Yoakum boys for playing a really good game, and as you can see my post from before....This is suppose to be about our home teams and yblue or whatever it is called is acting really ugly..Said horrible things..I am proud to say Cuero has stayed to the higher level of not being unkind about things..Take you energy to your game against Edna and support those BULLDOGS they deserve it..JOb well done..I like to watch games like our teams had the other night..Close good games..

    October 15, 2009 at 11:59 p.m.
  • You guy's need to step away from the computer and take a peek at the real world . We are sending kids/men to fight in war's but you want to puff out your chest and yell to the world that "They disrespected us by listening to loud music during warmup's " it's probably a good thing they didint decide to dance also who knows what might have happened next...a full scale riot ? I hope you do realize how stupid that sounds when you look at what is really important here and thats the Kid's. Both teams represented their town's to the best of their ability and thats all you can ask afterall it's just a game ...is it not ? Good luck to the Bulldog's

oh and GO MEAN GREEN !

    October 15, 2009 at 11:49 p.m.
  • Oh my goodness..Nobody has to call advocate..Read the print when you sign up here..They know ignorance when they read it..FYI someone from Cueros was deleted also..Smart one there...Well I doubt UIL this or UIL that will matter..They know we live to our standards...UIL has never been brought up before..Quit grasping for things..IT went from refs, to music, then something else..Like the guy said you win some you loose some...When we get beat we don't trash everyone on here...GOod luck again bulldogs..You boys make a game worth watching..

    October 15, 2009 at 11:45 p.m.
  • Yall say Yoakum crys, Cuero had to call the VA please block their comments they are telling the truth and it is hurting our feelings. It is going to be great to see Cuero 0-10 when the UIL gets done with them!

  • Then get that email going, were all on pins and needles

    October 15, 2009 at 2:48 p.m.
  • I showed these comments to some of the Cuero players and they are at awe..our boys are like we talked and hung out with kids after game..But yet you have people hiding behind computers to talk..I am amazed now at this has gotten so out of hand that the staff of victoria advocate had to remove the comments cause of the nonsense..This is just crazy..I have never seen such junk being wrote so bad..

    October 15, 2009 at 2:06 p.m.
  • Still a little sore over those beatings by VHS back in the day? Ya'll were alot like Yoakum.

  • Edna has class, their music will not contain vulgar lyrics.

    October 15, 2009 at 10:20 a.m.
  • All I can say is come on Yoakum get over the loss..It was a good game either way..I agree I will pray for the anger to be rebuked from you guys..stop focusing on Cuero now You win some you loose lots..And focus on the upcoming games to prove yourselves..Edna watch out If you guys win Friday night, look at what you are about to encounter..Anger from Yoakum, Hatred, accusations..Don't play any music cause it will be vulgar..Refs will be playing sides..Good luck both teams on Friday night

    October 15, 2009 at 9:10 a.m.
  • chsvarsitydad 1. We know they live in the district NOW, 2. There was alot of people that heard the F-BOMB coming from your music and we also seen one of your coaches make somebody change it so he knows it was not right. 3. Ok get ready to see then. 4. No now they have to play things for themselves now so they go home. 5. Moved back because you seen they got more good players from out towns so you wanted to be on a winning team. 6. You can keep your junk I know how yall do things. 7. Ok just remember you asked for it I will give you what you asked for. 8. Need to grow up and respect the home team it is called what yall say you have sportmanship. 9. It is not my problem I am not on the school board. 10. So was I and my family like we are win or lose.
It sounds like you are just like, "Interestedreader" and "cuerogobblersrock"

    October 15, 2009 at 7:40 a.m.
  • Well oldblue I don't think I have ever read more ignorant posts than you have written since this all started.#1 Name one kid playing that doesnt live in the district.#2 Each year a select couple of seniors are chosen by the coaches to make CD's for practice and games my son being one this year and the CD's are sensored by the school and coaches before use.#3 We do know the UIL rules and abide by them,if this were not the case we would be facing rules violations which we are not.#4 As for empty nesters deciding to move after their kids are gone, well this is called life, you might try and get one.#5 We moved out of Victoria when my son was in the third grade and Victoria decided to consolidate the High Schools and surely you have seen how well that has gone,so if your against me making a better life for my child then so be it,and this would explain some of your ignorance.#6 If you would like a copy of the pre-game music that had no F-bombs I have one but if you know the songs and know where the sensored words were then your already listening to the music your crying about so get over yourself.#7 Also sounds like you have some kind of proof that we have kids playing that arent passing so please present it.#8 We deal with opposing teams pregame music every where this is not just a Cuero thing,if Yoakum doesnt do this than thats their choice it doesnt make them any more or less for their choice.#9 Change your stadium policies, no one really cares and it doesnt hurt Cuero like your hoping it will,we will abide by your policy when we come to visit,no big deal, and once again youll have to get over your overblown ego.#10 after the game my wife and I sat outside the field house and mingled with players from both teams as they visited with each other and wish you could have been there because thats what it was all about.A group of kids being classy with each other and not this childish adult behavior you have taken to.
May God bless you and heal your anger!!!!

    October 15, 2009 at 12:37 a.m.
  • Thank you old blue! I'll see you Friday in Edna rooting for our bulldogs!!! I'll be the one yelling my head off, for sure!Let's go all the way Dogs, yall can do it!

    October 14, 2009 at 10:30 p.m.
  • Maybe call Dr. Mark Cousins Policy Director from UIL about the No Pass - No Play rule. That would get some knees shacking. An I am not talking about Yoakum they no the rules they know the kids education come first. Get the book straight.

    October 14, 2009 at 7:59 p.m.
  • Hey, raider4life Don't worry about being rude to "Interestedreader" he don't know what he is talking about he is with Cuero, An in one of his comments he stated that he follows cuero because of the coach so he knows what is going on in cuero the only one he is fooling is himself and maybe "cuerogobblersrock."

    October 14, 2009 at 7:26 p.m.
  • Not trying to sound off, as being rude by responding. But I read not too long ago, someone had put a comment that said "everyone knows cuero has the best atletes," and to which someone obviously from Victoria responded back, by saying yeah, the best atletes are from Cuero. But they live in Victoria. See so evidently, your own town knows something is up. But anyway just thought I'd fill you in about your hometown, since you know so much about ours!

    October 14, 2009 at 4:45 p.m.
  • Empty allegations? what are you, a lawyer that's representing Cuero!Lets move forward already, and go out there and support our teams, this friday night!

    October 14, 2009 at 4:04 p.m.
  • That's what I figured, more empty allegations. Like I said, good luck to the Bulldogs Friday night.

    October 14, 2009 at 3:44 p.m.
  • Interested reader, even if blue would give that info, you fixing to do something about it! nope, didn't think so! That one will just be swept under the rug as always! Anyway, we're just going to back our bulldogs and support them at every game and wish the best for everyone else, as well! Have a nice day!

    October 14, 2009 at 3:21 p.m.
  • I am still waiting on the alleged recruits Old Blue. Doesn't matter that I've from Victoria or not, you made the slanderous allegation but have yet to back it up. Just one would be good if you can find just one. Good Luck against the Cowboys.

    October 14, 2009 at 2:58 p.m.
  • LETS GO BULLDOGS, GO OUT AND PLAY LIKE YOU DID THIS PAST FRIDAY. We are going to forget these so called Cuero fans, they can't answer questions all they can say is that they win all the time, and some of them can't beleave that we sell turkey legs, and you have one so called fan jumping on there side just because they are a winning team, another person that just rides the, "bandwagon." Yes that is you, "Interestedreader."

    October 14, 2009 at 1:36 p.m.
  • Well where you got your facts from about our cheerleaders is not a fact..which I am sure is just more talk...It was an awesome game...I would rather go to a game where it is close and not a blow out game cause then it gets very boring...Play hard bulldogs friday night and make your hometown proud...

    October 14, 2009 at 1:31 p.m.
  • That was just weird about the comment about eating of turkeys, when one of you said, that it was rude of us for selling and eating them legs! But oh well, its yall's mascot, not ours.Anyway, Good Luck Friday Everybody!!!

    October 14, 2009 at 8:58 a.m.
  • Yep you know why everyone wants to eat Turkeys..cause they are popular and good..everyone wants to have it...During football season, Thanksgiving and Christmas..WTG Gobblers for being so popular..What is the saying our name must taste good cause it is always in your mouth..

    October 14, 2009 at 8:46 a.m.
  • You know alot people on here, saying that Yoakum are sore losers and blah, blah, blah. Yoakum has for years, put up with crap from Cuero! I tell you what Yoakum has just about had enough, they can take, and are now speaking out! Once again, just telling the truth!I've gotten the real scoop on the cheerleaders not coming over to our side friday, the way it was said is they told our cheerleaders "we're not winning, so we're not going over there" nothing to do with remarks from the past, because Yoakum has endured the same or worse. Also what is being said is that cuero didn't practice for that week, they were gonna play Yoakum, cause they were so sure, Our team would be brought down so quick! But hey again, we can't rewind the time and so we have to just go out and show our teams, that we're gonna be there for them no matter what! Good luck to all the teams friday!!!

    October 14, 2009 at 8:43 a.m.
  • So I guess Old Blue doesn't have any examples of recruiting? I don't have to live in Cuero to see slander. Good luck to the Bulldogs against the Cowboys.

    October 14, 2009 at 8:09 a.m.
  • Welcome back cuerogobblersrock the last I heard from you,you said you will not be back to read anymore, I see you know alot of our comments are right and for you Interestedreader keep your comments to yourself all you are trying to do is get some info, if you where not at the game and don't know what happen there you need some pepto because you have alot of BS and it is running all over yourself. OH I guess this is the first time nurse you ever seen turkey legs they do sell them in stores every where all you have to do is look in the meat dept.

    October 14, 2009 at 7:24 a.m.
  • I guess having the turkey nachos we served didn't bother you Nurse? Just them leg's, huh?

    October 14, 2009 at 5:46 a.m.
  • Just curious how old these Yoakum people are that are posting..They sound like jr. high kids..I agree with alot...Music shouldn't have vulgar language in it if it did..I couldn't hear it..Second lets remember what this is all about and that is the boys on both teams are out there playing with their heart and souls..These comments and post have turned into craziness...I can't get over how childish some of this sounds..WTG Yoakum once again on a game well played...Go show them cowboys what you guys got this year...You know they might be scared now knowing how close you guys came to Cuero..

    October 14, 2009 at 12:12 a.m.
  • Hey nurse, we can't help that your mascot, happens to be a food everyone enjoys, especially around November. Not being ugly ,just telling the truth and just like the other poster said about the loud music ?(10 years) and us just now complaining. They have been selling those turkey legs for how many years and you're complaining!Let this end and support our teams already ,its' over...

    October 13, 2009 at 11:45 p.m.
  • Interestedreader; Just like you said you weren't there and so you are going by what the article says. well, you had to be there to know, cause when we looked at the replay on this game, no where on that replay shows our guys doing what they say was an illegal procedure, and so let it be known those good ol' coaches over there, were the ones crying about it. What they called helmet to helmet, that caused us to lose a touchdown. It never happened. But that's okay, cause you know,I really don't find you to be relevant, if you don't know what's up with Cuero and Yoakum, just you worry about Victoria. But besides any point, it's high school football and its done. So we can all let it go and move forward with the rest of the season, and be there for our teams! (support and show love!)

    October 13, 2009 at 11:34 p.m.
  • Mr Blue, we are still waiting on you to back up your accusations. Admit it, you have none. Cuero boys from Cuero won the game, fair and square and the folks in Yoakum are having a hard time accepting that fact. I wasn't at the game but according to the article, the Bulldogs gave the Gobblers all they could handle and as good teams do, the Gobblers found a way to win. Winners never give up. Instead of whining and crying, the good folks of Yoakum should take some lessons from the Gobbler faithful and their fans and show good sportsmanship. I admit I have had my problems with the Gobblers since they have our former coach from here in Victoria but after a while I realized the man must be doing something right. You don't win as many games as consistently as Coach Reeve does unless you know what you are doing. Also I made some inquiries about the blasting music and Cuero is not the only team to do this and Cuero has evidently done this for 10 years, why didn't you complain in the years past? Quit looking for excuses and realize your team took a top 5 team in the state down to the wire and scared the britches off the turkeys. Get ready for the Cowboys and make your own traditions. Be known for a town of winners, not whiners.

    October 13, 2009 at 10:59 p.m.
  • ROTFL! Roasted turkey legs, I'm sorry, I just could not pass this one up. That's funny!!! C'mon ya'll, can't we still have a little fun out there? I agree some of the things aforementioned were uncalled for, but we still have to rub it in a little. I have more respect for Cuero than any other team in south Texas, but sorry nurse, that's to funny. I apologize in advance...

    October 13, 2009 at 10:38 p.m.
  • I really hope that when your school board met on Monday Night they also included in their stadium policy the rudeness and poor sportsmanship of your concession stand selling roasted turkey legs. I can assure you that Cuero is much more upclass and this would not happen in our stadium.

    October 13, 2009 at 9:43 p.m.
  • I am amazed at all this..Yoakum you guys are just showing what yall are all about..you don't see anything bad coming from cuero..Please tell me what players we have recruited from anywhere..and also lavernia beat us pretty good last year but you sure should have seen our stadium regardless if we thought we were going to win or loose..Nothing about going to a blowout game it is all about support for our team and our town...Please focus on the good job yoakum is doing this year..Put the energy yall are doing on bashing us and put it out in that stadium for friday night..Good luck to you all.

    October 13, 2009 at 6:24 p.m.
  • Old Blue - are you serious? The Cuero QB was born and raised in Cuero, as were his parents. Didn't you read the article a while back about both of his uncles playing on State Championship games back in the 70's? You are showing your ignorance now. VA, please don't delete this thread, that is a true statement. Old Blue, you are making foolish statements now. Good Luck to your team.

    October 13, 2009 at 5:50 p.m.
  • Thank you interestedreader...and jimbo79...you said it better than I could...I had to take a slap in the face from bigblue and other classy Yoakum fans with good sportsmanship. You disrespectful people will have to throw your nasty comments to someone else because I won't even read this again. You guys were right about giving ammunition! Oh my God---they told me to read slower and be sober when I read???????? Miserable people....I won't even waste my time trying to defend myself--and to people I don't even know! GOOD LUCK TO YOU GOBBLERS! AND to our neighbors in Yoakum! We can't let a select few "SPEAK" for us all! Thank you GOD for the "miracles" you gave us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    October 13, 2009 at 4:44 p.m.
  • ALL I CAN SAY IS WHERE DID THE QB COME FROM? YOU NEED MORE?

    October 13, 2009 at 4:37 p.m.
  • Old Blue, I hope your spelling and grammar doesn't represent the entire student body of YHS. Instead of worrying about what an opposing town does so much, maybe you ought to worry about your studies. I don't know much about Cuero's program, other than they are successful, and success breeds jealousy. If you are going to accuse Cuero of recruiting, why don't you list some examples. Come on, back up your statements. Good Luck to the Gobblers next week. Once piece of advise though, maybe rethink the music selections on your next trip out of town. Don't want to give the jealous folks more ammunition.

    October 13, 2009 at 2:59 p.m.
  • leah, I think you need to read my post a little slower and be sober when you read it. I will tell you in plan english why yall have to go and recruit kids from other towns to move to cuero to play football do what every other town does play with the kids in your town. This is what makes football good to watch they are more even teams. This is why yall have so many people at your games because 95% of them are blow outs it is always easy to have people there when you are a winning team but good fans are the one that are there if you win or lose like YOAKUM BULLDOG FANS. If you can't understand this you need to print it and tape it to your farhead and let your friends explain it to you. Lets go Bulldogs.

    October 13, 2009 at 2:33 p.m.
  • Get rid of that style of music your team plays in warm ups Leah.

Cuero is too good to go to that level. We had to make a policy change in our stadium policy, just to prevent fan's from hearing that garbage from ya'll in Yoakum in the future.

Surely they can find a "fire up" tune without all the F'bombs in it.

    October 13, 2009 at 12:27 p.m.

  • i am really regreting that I started reading the posts after the articles...this is startin to become all "u against me" crap...talk about sportsmanship and class...and I'm gettin is insults from people I don't even know about "kids" they don't even know...and who cares about % of people who come back to Cuero? There's good and BAD in EVERY town...who doesn't know that? People make mistakes IN EVERY TOWN, and I love MY kids and ALL the kids on our team! I AM FROM CUERO AND YOU WANT SPORTSMANSHIP & CLASS....here goes..once again...Boys from Yoakum---you did great (and i was worried--thru the whole thing!) You guys are no different than our guys--we just don't know you all...good luck in all you do! We love our teams cuz our children, family and friends are on it! We yell for them, support them and love them---get rid of the attitudes and stereotypes! EVERYONE isn't like that!

    October 13, 2009 at 12:10 p.m.
  • Yoakum School Board met Monday and will write a stadium policy for Bulldog Stadium, preventing the garbage the fan's had to listen to Friday night. This policy will override any district policy. Thank you Yoakum School Board.

Palacios fans, bring some ear plugs for this Friday's game in Cuero, so you don't have to hear all the F-bombs coming out of their sound system during warm up like we had to endure.

    October 13, 2009 at 12:09 p.m.
  • Come on Cuero show that sportmanship yall say you have let us all no the %.

  • I see my question is still not being answered. I say it is a high number. Is anybody from cuero going to answer my question on the % of how many of there players and there familys move back to there home town when they graduate.

    October 13, 2009 at 10:37 a.m.
  • what the heck is up with downing Cuero so much..I don't see too much of these comments downing Yoakum..All in all they state their defense but also we let Yoakum know they did a good job and they played just as hard..Now who doesn't have class? This is just crazy..You can't blame everything game on refs, or whichever..I pray for you yoakum that you can turn your attitudes around..We don't whine we don't cry we just play football and win or loose our boys know they have only done their best..Just as yoakum boys can feel this way...we are not the only ones to beat Yoakum but we in Cuero are catching the most crap from it..Again good job yoakum boys for a game well played..You guys played hard and will go far this year..Keep your heads up and tell your fans to fill the stadium and support yall throughout the season..

    October 13, 2009 at 9:15 a.m.
  • ONE LAST NOTE; THIS SEASON ISN'T OVER YET. OUR BULLDOGS CAN STILL GO ALL THE WAY!!!GOOD LUCK BOYS! WE'LL BE THERE TO SUPPORT YOU!!!NO MATTER WHAT!

    October 12, 2009 at 11:44 p.m.
  • Yall cuero people can't say, that you weren't scared that, yall were gonna lose, cause you sure were quiet, throughout the game, when Yoakum was kicking yalls tail. The score should have been 27-26 with our trey taking that TD and pushing away from yall guys! But you guys have been pushing yalls big egos on every town for how long now? Hey, it doesn't take winning every game to be champions like yall claim( remember you're #6 in state Not #1. But I know some hot head is gonna get on here in a minute, and say yeah, but Yoakum is not on that list)So who cares, our boys could go pro after high school, like the one from my hometown Victoria did(Jerehme Urban)Hey and he came from my old school that didn't win too many games! (STROMAN HIGH SCHOOL)Til this day I still say, I was proud to be a RAIDER!!! AND NOW PROUD MAMA OF A YOAKUM BULLDOG,AND YES I TOO LOVE MY SON, BUT I ALSO LOVE THE WHOLE TEAM FOR EVERYTHING, THEY PUT IN TOGETHER!!!

    October 12, 2009 at 11:35 p.m.
  • can someone please post the remaining Cuero home schedule and information about buying tickets for home games.

    thanks

    October 12, 2009 at 11:15 p.m.
  • Is anybody from cuero going to answer my question on the % of how many of there player and there familys move back to there home town when they graduate. Leah, what would it do if you came face to face the truth is the truth. Everybody else in this district plays with people that are in there home town they don't go out looking for players remember what yall are saying it is a school sport not college or the pros. I see you are having problems with the truth I understand. An nobody told you not to love your kid, we at yoakum love all are kids win or lose. We don't pound it in to there head that they have to win we just asked them to play their best. I think yall in cuero need to start look for the coupons in the paper for tissues because your playoffs will be short this year.

    October 12, 2009 at 10:59 p.m.
  • Wow. Yoakum, this is a disgrace. You lose another game and go 2-4 and all you do is whine. "The refs were pulling for them! Cuero cheats! That music was disrespectful! Its my time of the month! :(" Take some Midol and suck it up.
"They better not play that music again, I'll go unplug it myself next time." That's classy. How many people were actually at the game? Funnily enough, I was there. The music was on extremely low. Only people on the field could hear anything, especially the words. "Blaring?" Seriously? Grow up. Sure they could've done without the cussing. I guess we'll have to play some church music or something similar next time. As for your claims of no one else doing it, that is untter BS. Maybe if Yoakum would make it to the playoffs, they would see that BOTH sides bring music. Go watch a college game; both sides have music. As for all the "poor sportsmanship" claims, since when has heel hooking been legal? You claim we cheat and we go after your QB, yet you go and try to heel hook Tyler at the bottom of the dogpile in an attempt to ruin his future as an athlete out of pure spite and jealosy. Yeah, real classy. You are starting to have a decent football program. Suck it up, stop whining and complaining, GET BEHIND YOUR TEAM. Notice why Cuero does good wherever they go? Notice the whole visitor side is full? Maybe it is becaue the ENTIRE TOWN is supporting them. Go support your Bulldogs and they might win more. And as for the comment about Cuero only going to win 1 game in playoffs this year, I think that is more than Yoakum has won in a few years ;). Good game and step it up next time.

    October 12, 2009 at 10:47 p.m.
  • leah
Not one Cuero poster has said or made any comments about the ref's play calling. Nor did anyone from Cuero say we went for the QB of Yoakum.
Cuero's come back to win the game in the 2nd half was not a MIRACLE. Cuero WON and they deserve the win. Also Hats off to Yoakum

    October 12, 2009 at 7:08 p.m.
  • oh my God...if you guys only realized how jealous and ridiculous you sound. Saying that because we are ranked in top 10 we can get refs to call for us...we went for the QB, talk crap to your poor little players, and now...WE MAKE MIRACLES HAPPEN IN THE 4TH QUARTER! I wish I could come face to face with people like you! Talkin about havin NO CLASS or SPORTSMANSHIP!!! And you insult our kids and our town because of the way the score went???? Like all you got there is class and sportsmanship---no trash talkers, bad calls, and God forbid--any cuss words or accidents! What ridiculous fans you are! My son plays for this team--and I love him! and if he made a miracle happen friday night, then we are blessed and we deserve it! AND!!!!! CONGRATS TO AN AWESOME YOAKUM TEAM and to their fans--YOUR BOYS did great!!! It's the SELECT few that embarrass us all!

    October 12, 2009 at 5:22 p.m.
  • I agree with flash...It was a great game as I have said 100 times through the comments..anyway good luck to Our Gobblers friday night..Good luck also bulldogs..Play as well as you did friday night and you will get somewhere.

    October 12, 2009 at 8:12 a.m.
  • Hey, let's get over it already! There will be a winner and a loser in every game. But I will say it was the best game I have seen in a long time. If you missed it,you probably missed the best game that will take place in the crossroads area this year. Two great teams...one great rivarly! (PRICELESS) And as far as the officiating, good or bad, we all make mistakes. I am sure TASO would love to have more applications. Sign up!

    October 11, 2009 at 10:17 p.m.
  • I was asked why our cheerleaders did not go over to bulldogs side..Did not want history to repeat itself with the remarks from fans, listening to the crud..That is all beside the point..Again hats off to both teams for a job well done..They both did a good job..I just can't get over the hatred remarks on here about Cuero, come on it is football, Our kids are doing something they enjoy and that is playing football this is both ways cuero and yoakum..

    October 11, 2009 at 10:07 p.m.
  • Has anyone noticed a trend in these comments? Every fan from both teams loves their team? Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose, but think about it. It was a great game that kept you glued to your seat. Hats off to all the players, coachs, bands, cheerleaders and everyone else who hollered their lungs out to cheer their teams on to victory. We are truly blest to live in a land where we are free to do enjoy Texas Schoolboy football at it's best. This game was one of the best.

    October 11, 2009 at 12:47 p.m.
  • Looks like people are still a little passionate about high school football in south Texas. Makes me a little homesick!

    October 11, 2009 at 12:17 p.m.
  • cuerogobblersrock by the way you think your team and school have sportmanship well what happen to your cheerleaders coming over to the yoakum side. That was sportmanship all the way if your a rude school like CUERO. The only thing cuero can do right is to get a turkey to run a straight line because everybody else is rude and Disrespectful.

    October 11, 2009 at 10:37 a.m.
  • cuerogobblesrock somebody from your town helps write that book thats the only way yall get in there with them comments.
I would like to see the % of how many of there player and there familys move back to there home town when they graduate.
HEY YTDOGS I have your back next time they come in to are house and try that we will take care of that problem.
Or maybe someone that looks over are district should come and watch how cuero is when they go to someone else house.

    October 11, 2009 at 9:47 a.m.
  • JC, I'm fully aware of were you work, thus---the comment of "they let you out to attend". Guess you don't remember, but I seen you at the game along with several other of my good friends from Cuero.

Tell Jody Z. to come see us in Yoakum. Fine job he is doing over there too.

Once again, I could careless what Cuero listens too, but---bringing that megablaster boom box with them out of town, to someone else home stadium is uncalled for and rude. That belongs at home. Name one other school anywhere, college or pro---that brings a device, hooks it up on the field and blares music from a machine while the home school PA announcer is trying to announce pre-game announcements. Right, there are none. It's called being courteous and respectful to your host. You are our guest.

    October 11, 2009 at 5:46 a.m.
  • It was a great game between the 2nd oldest rivalry in high school football. My hats off to Yoakum for playing lights out football. But great teams find a way to win and Cuero pulled it out. Great comeback for Cuero.Very proud of the way both teams played hard till the very end.If Yoakum can bring that same level of play for the rest of the season they will make some noise in the playoffs.
as for the fans lets stop the bashing of two great teams and towns. As for the sound system it was for the players not the fans and yes not my choice of music either. But im old school myself. Im proud of Cuero's football tradition but Yoakum can have tradition.Get your community behind your team. those kids deserve your support and attendance. they gave their all friday night so be proud of them.

    October 11, 2009 at 12:56 a.m.
  • JC: not trying to be disrespectful to you ,but for you to say that one person on our team was doing all the work, you need to be a little fair, cause the bulldogs were in this game together. Yes, our trey is very talented, but we give credit to all of our guys , and I might add you guys use trent and tyler for almost all of your plays as well, The whole team plays as a whole not one or two! And by the way ,WE THE FANS OF THE YOAKUM BULLDOGS ARE THERE, WHEREVER THEY PLAY AND IT MIGHT NOT BE FILLED TO CAPACITY, BUT WE SHOUT AND HOLLER AS LOUD AS WE CAN FOR OUR BOYS!!!

    October 10, 2009 at 11:58 p.m.
  • The field painting happened last year YTDog. I won't say their name, G...A...
You can fill in the rest of the letters. By the way, I work at the jail, not a resident.

    October 10, 2009 at 11:10 p.m.
  • Leave the music for your home stadium JC. The field painting incidents have not occurred since you and I played back in the day. Good old days, huh?

I wish our town would hang a turkey or something to get behind this team:) Dead now days in the Land of Leather.

    October 10, 2009 at 11:01 p.m.
  • A little extra tidbit to add, don't say we are the bad guys of the district. Numerous times, both in Cuero and in towns we have visited, the opponents have shown disrespect. I have seen turkeys hanging by a rope in store windows, cars vandelized, and even our football field spray painted and you are worried about a sound system. ( A single tear runs down my cheek ). I will side with you on the choice of music, better choices out there.

    October 10, 2009 at 10:55 p.m.
  • Cat, they let ya out of Dewitt County Jail to attend:) Yes, it was a classic game. No disagreement from me there. Like I said, it was won by the better team this night. No excuses, you beat us. To beat the champ, you gotta knock them out when you have them down. We didn't. Love your football program.

My issue's is with actions off the field. Disrespecting home teams, doing things inappropriate, like bringing your own sound system and blaring it while the host team were trying to make announcements.

Trash talking by the players is even acceptable. That's expected in our matchups. Makes it great really.

Those off the field need to learn manners is all.

    October 10, 2009 at 10:51 p.m.
  • Yoakum, would you like some cheese with your wine? I will admit Cuero was very flat with their playing last night. Numerous mistakes and mistackles. Number 8 was very impressive with his running and I wish him well in his future in football but you can't rely on one person to do all the work. Once we got our heads back in the game and realized all you were doing is running the ball with the same person and the same plays over and over again, it starts to get easy to defend against. Stop the trash talking. Support your team. Gobbler fans will drive long distance to support our team and fill opponents stands in any weather, alot of big holes on your side during a home game Yoakum. Anyway, great game, great teams, great rivalry, try again next year. A Win is a Win.

    October 10, 2009 at 10:43 p.m.
  • cuerogobblersrock, Bringing your own sound system, other than your great sounding band, and blaring it at someone else home stadium isn't appropriate. Nothing to do with the rivalry. Trust me, no one else does this. Leave it at home and enjoy the kind remarks our PA announcer was trying to pass along to our good friends from Cuero. Very disrespectful.

    October 10, 2009 at 10:42 p.m.

    October 10, 2009 at 10:41 p.m.
  • I didn't understand the words being played, but no Cuero is not known for this..Read the texas sports magazine and Cuero is always in there for good sportmanship along with everything else in Texas football..This Cuero, Yoakum rivalry is rediculous..Let the kids play football and that is it..Whether it be Cuero winning or Yoakum winning, these boys play hard on both teams..So much hatred.. If it had cuss words in it, no not appropriate it, but what music is appropriate anymore but christian music that is it..The rival is not between the players anymore it is the town pumping it..WTG both teams for playing a hard game Friday night..

    October 10, 2009 at 10:29 p.m.
  • It's just Cuero. And, I have many friends from Cuero and admire their team and town. But, they think cause they are the powerhouse, they can disrespect the host school, and do as they please when they want. Seen it many times. But, it will not happen again in Bulldog Stadium.

    October 10, 2009 at 10:28 p.m.
  • YT dogs: I'm all for you on that one!If their own don't take notice to do something, it's the right of that home team to take that action!

    October 10, 2009 at 10:24 p.m.
  • Next time, I'll just go unplug it myself. Yoakum Adm should of been aware. Not the first time Cuero has done these type of things around the district.

    October 10, 2009 at 10:19 p.m.
  • Carpenter:I have to agree with you on that! It's one thing to support your team, but to support such gross and vulgar conduct should be a disgrace to any town!

    October 10, 2009 at 10:17 p.m.
  • Carp, that's cool---but, really belongs at their home stadium, or if they are the home team in the playoffs. Kinda like staying the night at your friends house, and helping yourself to their fridge, changing the TV channel while the homeowners were watching it, etc. They need to learn some manners to go along with their awesome and talented football program.

    October 10, 2009 at 10:16 p.m.
  • Sounds like the ego thing might be getting a little large over there in Cuero. I don't follow the game so it really does not affect me..
I just think it is very easy to say that the Admins don't know or put a blind eye towards the way they are doing their music activities..I think they know exactly what's being played..
As long as it pumps up their beloved Gobblers...

    October 10, 2009 at 10:08 p.m.
  • Have to ask old blue Carp. He heard the lyrics, not I. I was just agreeing with him that it's odd a visiting team would bring their sound system in, and blare it at someone else home stadium.

Cuero Administration is probably like I, and have no clue what the lyrics were saying. Regardless, this should be left for when they are the home team, and just use their very entertaining and good sounding high school band for music during warm-ups on the road. I've seen 100's of games around the state, and never seen a visiting school bring in their own sound system and blare it, drowning out the home PA announcer, while it's team warmed up. Kinda rude really.

    October 10, 2009 at 10:01 p.m.
  • So, YTDogs or raider4life, What was the song and is this a normal thing to play during a game?
I would think if the folks are so worried about the youth today they would not let something like this get by.
Being a good Christian community and all.. Or would they be something other than that..

    October 10, 2009 at 9:47 p.m.
  • For you guys that say that Yoakum is grumbling about losing, hey you might see it like that, but if The Bulldogs would have had that game in the end( And i feel they did have it, throughout the game) If it had been your team to lose, Ya'll would have done something much worse than grumbling, and I have heard and seen some of the things! OK ya'll got the game with 3 points, but yet one of your Qbs was talking alot of trash anyway, after the game to one of our guys, so practice what you preach and teach your guys some manners!!! KEEP GOING STRONG BIG BLUE!!!

    October 10, 2009 at 9:05 p.m.
  • Oldblue, I did find that kinda odd myself. Didn't know it had cuss words in it cause I don't listen to that type of garbage. But, blaring their tunes at our stadium was odd. They have been known to have their team come out after half, into the endzone to 20 yard line, while the opponents band was still performing and warm up. That's Cuero. Great team, classless acts.

    October 10, 2009 at 8:51 p.m.
  • I strongly still believe in you, YOAKUM BULLDOGS!! And proud of you guys for the hard work on the field every game you play, don't give up, be proud and believe also in yourselves. And just work it like you did last night for the rest of your games, and you'll go all the way and we (your fans) will be out there rooting for you!!! Keep your heads up!!!

    October 10, 2009 at 8:46 p.m.
  • This is the best game I have seen Yoakum play Cuero. The worst is cuero comes in to the dogs house and they try to play there own music before and at that the words that was said in the song was MOTHER F_____ AND YES THE STANDS ON BOTH SIDES HAD YOUNG KIDS. There taste of music is the same as there play trashy. To tell you the truth I can't see Cuero winning to many games in the playoffs this year. They will be lucky to win one game in the playoffs.

    October 10, 2009 at 5:15 p.m.
  • WTG MEAN GREEN!!! You guys went out there and played a good game..Yoakum for the first time this year gave you guys a run for your money..I am proud to be a Gobbler fan for 35 years now..I am proud that my son is a part of the Cuero Gobblers..I am glad to see Yoakum doing better than before..Instead of bull puppies they came out last night as Bulldogs..Yoakum played with heart and soul just as much as Cuero..I just wish the nonsense on the field between the two teams would stop. WTG both teams for a job well done..I don't think the refs had anything to do with it..You can't blame a loss on refs all the time..You just learn from your mistakes and play a better game next Friday..

    October 10, 2009 at 4:53 p.m.

    October 10, 2009 at 3:55 p.m.
  • Dawgfan, I think Cuero has earned that coverage from Foreman. I hope Yoakum's turn is coming in the coming years with our winning play year after year.

Plus, look at the stands. Standing room only on the vistors side. Cuero has a following. Thus, the readership of the Advocate. Maybe Yoakum fan's will get behind the Dogs like the Mean Green followers do Cuero? This year's Yoakum team is good, and deserves the backing of the town.

What happened to the days when downtown business windows were painted up, support signs up from the business (Triple R only one I see around town) banners flying, home stands over-flowing? This team warrants that type of support. They are a good team, trying to learn a new system and it's getting close to being understood fully. Watch out Dog opponents.

The bigger game is this coming Friday in Edna. It's a must win IMO. Let's see if Yoakum fan's can pack Edna stands, like Cuero packed Bulldog Stadium?

    October 10, 2009 at 3:54 p.m.
  • I agree that both team played well but Yoakum was suppose to be a knock out for the mean green and that didn't happen. And yes I believe that Cuero gets calls from the refs because they are Cuero. The coverage of the Cuero advocate gave me the impression that Cuero was the only team on that field. Everyone knows that Cuero left Yoakum having played a football team. Sadly disappointed again in the Advocate's Mike Foreman's reporting.

    October 10, 2009 at 3:28 p.m.
  • That officiating chapter was from Houston. Yoakum used San Antonio Chapter for non-district games only.

    October 10, 2009 at 2:15 p.m.
  • kingrob wrote @ 11:10am: "Just out of curiosity, did Smithville and the refs cheat last week when they scored 57 points on your defense?" Is that not discussing previous games that had nothing to do with last night's game? I'll bet that Cuero will lose a game this year because the refs are influenced by the opposing coaches, then I will be laughing out loud! Great game, Bulldogs!

    October 10, 2009 at 2:03 p.m.
  • Told ya this would be closer than the predicted 30 point point spread. And, it would come down to who makes plays in the 2nd half.

Congrats Cuero, and best wishes in the playoffs.

To my Dogs. Keep head high. You are beginning to execute this new system at the right time. Sure this hurts, but live goes on. Yoakum community is proud of the effort. Now focus on Edna, or you'll be 0-2 and struggling for the real goal---the playoffs. Cowboys are a solid team too.

Officials calls had no bearing on this game. Cuero won fair and square. They earned the win, and our continued respect. Tradition comes from the inner soul and heart of the players. Cuero has this, and Yoakum is one their way of obtaining this. Great job Dogs.

    October 10, 2009 at 12:54 p.m.
  • Ummm.. dace2112, go back and reread my post. I talked about the qtr back being injured, no first down for the Bulldogs in the 4th qtr. I didn't dispute the refs pulling for Cuero, because that doesn't deserve the time you're giving it. Blaming the refs for your teams loss makes you look like a sore loser. Losing sux, yes, even Cuero has lost a few, but you don't go and blame the refs for your team losing. It just doesn't look good. Who knows, Cuero's reign might be over next year, then again, maybe not. That's next year. This year is not over with yet. If Yoakum comes out fired up against every team (and not just against Cuero), then they WILL be in the playoffs. I hope your qtr backs injury was nothing too serious. Good luck in the 4 district games that remain.

    October 10, 2009 at 12:51 p.m.
  • Cuero knows Yoakum had that game and that's all that really matters. Everyone knew who the best team was last night. Referees calls or lack thereof are part of the game and it is sad that they sometimes determine who wins. True, the Turkeys were ahead on the scoreboard and true, stats don't always add up to the winning team, but Yoakum is the REAL winner in this one. Everyone keeps saying that Cuero is overrated, but I don't agree with that. Yes, they are a top 10 team, but I think Yoakum is just as good. Our 2-4 record doesn't show that, but just watch and see as the season progresses. CUERO'S REIGN WILL COME TO AN END NEXT YEAR!!!!!

    October 10, 2009 at 12:30 p.m.
  • Whinning, thats what the YT always do. They whine too much. Great game last nite! Both Teams did a Fantastic job.. Shows real team work!!!

    October 10, 2009 at 12:16 p.m.
  • Note that kingrob does not dispute that the refs "helped" out Cuero last night, all he can do is talk about previous games. tnt88: Stats do not always tell who really won the game. Cuero had their necks on the chopping block last night and some zebras got in the way of the blade.

    October 10, 2009 at 11:55 a.m.
  • That is part of playing. If you play a #6 team in the state, you have to beat them, refs, and keep your ankles from twisted.

    October 10, 2009 at 11:43 a.m.
  • About the Yoakum/Cuero football game, I want to congratulated the Bulldogs football players for a job well done, Cuero came with the attitude of beating the bulldogs by a much higher score than yesterday. Three points winning? nothing big!, but finally the dogs had shown their teeth. I will not talk about the referees, they need to have their eyes on the game and not taking so much side I am talking about Cuero side, yes my friends it was flagrant How many times their call was wrong.
About Cuero keeping on running their green flag along the football field whiles one of the Yoakum players was down, what kind of sportsmanship is this?
Yoakum fan, fair and pride of my Bulldogs.

    October 10, 2009 at 11:31 a.m.
  • For the Dawg fans grumbling about the refs, show some class! You lost the game, and many factors contributed to it. Let's see, QB playing with a hurt foot (don't go after my foot, it hurts already!), then go sit on the bench! Yoakum not making a first down in the 4th qtr, I guess this had nothing to do with the Cuero Defense stepping up. Don't get me wrong, great game by the Bulldogs, and it seemed as though the Gobblers were a bit flat. However, the Gobblers pulled out the win, and that's what champions do. Just out of curiosity, did Smithville and the refs cheat last week when they scored 57 points on your defense? Congrats on the win Gobblers!!

    October 10, 2009 at 11:10 a.m.
  • But since you asked:
Total yards: Cuero 401, Yoakum 312
    1st downs: Cuero 23, Yoakum 15
    Turnovers: Cuero 2, Yoakum 0
    Penalties Cuero 8 for 45, Yoakum 6 for 56

Stats are posted on another newspaper's site of a major city east of here. Won't mention the name in deference to the Advocate but you can figure it out.

    October 10, 2009 at 10:22 a.m.
  • Scoreboard is the only stat that matters. Otherwise they wouldn't keep the score in the first place.

    October 10, 2009 at 10:19 a.m.
  • Cuero has all the luck in the world with the Zebras and the calls they get just because they are ranked 6th, Big Blue Trey Hights is in the end zone and everybody on the field was showing a touchdown but the lone zebra that was on the Cuero side, at the end of the play threw the flag because a good 5 coaches where on the field the whole time the play was running they were yelling at the zebra did you see the "illegal procedure" OH thats right they are ranked 6th in state they get that call. I call that cuero was scared. Then they go after are QB by trying to brake his foot. I call that bad football again, Yall can't call that football QB fell forward to get 1st down and you see the cuero guy from the stands going for his foot he was DOWN the play was done but you can see the player twisting the QB foot. THE SCORE SHOULD BE 27 to 26 Yoakum if you let the kids play and the zebras ref.

  • Is there somewhere to get the stats? That is what really shows who won the game.

  • I agree with sirlacelot. Speaking of bogus, don't forget the very late "illegal procedure" penalty as Hights was already in the end zone. The Bulldogs had to setlle for a field goal on that possession. Cuero was very lucky last night. I didn't know turkeys & zebras were close friends!

  • It was a great game between two great teams and Yoakum showed me something that I haven't seen in a while-- heart and determination. If you ask me, Cuero lucked out in this one. A bogus late-hit penalty on a sack of Arndt midway through the 4th quarter and a miracle TD pass on 4th and goal from 28 yards out bailed the Turkeys out. That's part of the game though and Cuero knew who the better team was tonight. We laid the wood and knocked them around like they haven't been knocked around in a long time. The Yoakum players should keep their heads up and be proud of their efforts. The season's not over by any means and if them 'Dogs keep playing like they did tonight, who knows how far they can go this year. I'm very proud of the Bulldogs and just wait--- Cuero's reign will be over with soon!
