Economic woes, lagging jobs market, falling home prices, the current recession or possible depression - it's enough to get a man down. Media sources all are covering the negative while looking at the positives in a different light.
Eat right and save money on the grocery bill. Throw a beautiful wedding on a budget. Slash utility costs and save the planet. Dress your best for less. How to get curb appeal without going broke.
Everyone has a plan for saving money, and we're no different.
First Baptist Church and the Guadalupe Baptist Association are offering some clean, hysterical family entertainment for the best budget of all . free!
At 6 p.m., Sunday, following the association's 90th annual meeting at First Baptist Church, Dennis Swanberg, America's Minister of Encouragement, will bring inspiration, joy and laughter to Victorians needing a dose of life's oldest medicine in the form of impersonations and storytelling.
"The Swan," who is a native of Austin, began his career like most comedians . in the living room as a boy. He mimicked television characters and moved on to impersonate teachers and others in authority to get a laugh among his friends. He frequently was encouraged by his parents and family members to "tell that story" when conversations began to lag.
High school landed him the emcee gig at the talent show and a career was launched. Probably not the career you're thinking, though.
Upon graduation from Baylor University, Swanberg made the decision to go into the ministry and got his master's degree at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. Knowing he had been called, and thinking that meant being a preacher, Swanberg embarked on a 23-year career as a pastor (and a funny one at that).
Still, the stage called him and he continued taking comedy gigs when he could. Finally, the sideshow took away too much from his congregation, and he stepped onto the stage of inspiration permanently.
That brings us full circle. Now he's coming back to Victoria for an opportunity to share some of that side-splitting comedy with the community. The Swan talks about everyday people living everyday lives. His humor touches everyone because it's about life, love, family, joy, hope and encouragement.
If you're thinking this is all too old-fashioned for you, and you won't like it, Google Dennis Swanberg and watch "Bengy and the Zipper" or one of his others on YouTube. I dare you not to laugh.
There's no requirement to be a Baptist, no tickets to buy or money to spend, no age limitations. Just stop by the First Baptist Church, 301 North Glass Street, at 5:30 p.m. for light refreshments. Be there at 4:30 p.m. if you would like to participate in the association's business meeting.
Then move into the sanctuary by 6 p.m. and get ready to laugh.
Chances are, you'll be texting your friends who didn't show up ROFL (rolling on floor laughing).
C.A. Raschke is a member of First Baptist Church. She and her husband, Scott, live in Victoria and are active within the community.
