Q: Is there an E-Waste Day this fall?

A: Yes, our Environmental Services Department is working with a private company to hold an E-Waste Day on Oct. 23-24 at the Victoria Community Center.

Items the public can bring for this event include computer-related items in any condition - computer parts, keyboards, mice, cables, phones, batteries, printers, laptops, CRT and LCD monitors, televisions, game devices, security equipment, cameras, cable and satellite equipment, scanners, copiers, software, small appliances, mainframes, servers or networking.

E-waste day is free for residents and individuals. However, everyone must register for this event. Register by phone at 1-877-55E-WASTE, by e-mail to: victoriatx@recyclingevent.com or online at www.recyclingevent.com.

Commercial customers will be charged by the amount of e-waste that is brought in. A large box that holds 600 to 1,200 pounds of e-waste is $75 per box. A medium box that holds 300 to 500 pounds is $50 and a small box that holds up to 200 pounds is $25.

Again, everyone is required to register by phone, e-mail or online to bring in e-waste.

Television sets can also be dropped off but there is a fee for each television depending on the size of the set. There is a $10 fee for TVs 19 inches and smaller; a $15 fee for televisions between 21- 35-inches; and a $20 fee for sets larger than 35 inches. Any console televisions or projector televisions console are $25 each.

Remember: E-Waste Day is for computers and electronics only, no chemicals, paints, liquids, pesticides or tires will be accepted. And don't forget to register.

Q: Is Victoria still under voluntary water restrictions?

A: No. The South Texas area received enough rainfall during the month of September and October to end all water restrictions in Victoria. The flow in the Guadalupe River increased above the minimum flow rate for 14 days since Stage 2 restrictions were lifted, allowing Stage 1 water restrictions to end. We always encourage citizens to practice water conservation year-around and avoid water use for non-essential purposes. For a list of water conservation practices, citizens can visit the city's Web site at www.victoriatx.org or contact the Public Works Department at 361-485-3381.

Q: What qualifies as a junk vehicle?

A: A junk vehicle, according to Subchapter E Sec 683.071 of the Texas Transportation Code, does not have lawfully attached to it an unexpired license plate and valid motor vehicle inspection sticker and is wrecked, dismantled or partially dismantled, or is inoperable for more than 72 hours if the vehicle is on public property, or is inoperable for 30 consecutive days if the vehicle is on private property. The vehicle must also be visible from a public street. Junk vehicles can be reported by calling the Code Enforcement Department at 485-3330 or by browsing to the city Web site at www.victoriatx.org and click on the "Customer Service Request" link on the red command bar.

Q: Does Victoria have an organization of volunteers to help respond to local emergencies like floods and hurricanes?

A: Yes. Our Office of Emergency Management operates a Community Emergency Response Team. The group's mission is simple: "Do the greatest good for the greatest number of people" when a major disaster strikes our community."

CERT's primary purpose is to assist first responders and the community during a wide array of emergencies. CERT volunteers are utilized as a supplemental resource to provide basic care, stabilization and information until emergency responders can arrive on scene. Secondarily, CERT volunteers will focus on public education, community projects, and training in order to increase the emergency preparedness level for themselves and other members of the community. If you are interested in becoming a CERT member, call the Office of Emergency Management at 485-3362 or visit the CERT Web page at http://www.victoriatx.org/oem/localcert.asp.
