VAL HUVAR FACTS
Born Oct. 19, 1919, in El Campo, but grew up in Victoria.
Attended Nazareth Academy and graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1937.
Served in the U.S. Army Air Force from Dec. 31, 1941, to Feb. 5, 1946, achieving the rank of master sergeant.
Huvar was married to Luella in 1947. They had four children, 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Val Huvar said he doesn't think much about his age.
"I just go along," he said. But Huvar, the longest serving county clerk in Texas, was recognized Monday in Commissioners Court on his 90th birthday.
He was all smiles as family and friends gathered for the surprise ceremony, which included a resolution read by County Judge Don Pozzi.
And Huvar's dry sense of humor showed when he delivered his own surprise: "I appreciate this honor and I will continue to serve Victoria County the remainder of this term and the next term."
Huvar, who is up for re-election in 2010, received a standing ovation from the crowd.
Joyce Dean, the county's director of Administrative Services, has worked with Huvar for 15 years. He's a no-nonsense guy who is a wealth of knowledge, she said.
"He's a Texas treasure," she said. "He's a tremendous asset to Victoria County."
A single sentence in the resolution read by Pozzi sums up what Huvar's friends and co-workers were saying about him. "Val D. Huvar, no matter how busy, never gave up his essential nature of caring deeply for his family, friends and co-workers."
Huvar said tongue-in-cheek that his secret to staying in office was to keeping running and for the people to keep voting for him.
"I imagine I'm doing something right," he said. "I take pride in the office and appreciate people continuing to support me."
Huvar, who was first sworn into office on Jan. 1, 1955, declined to say how much longer he expects to continue in office.
While he is the longest tenured county employee, his son Michael is in the No. 2 spot at 37 years. He is foreman for County Commissioner Kevin Janak.
Val Huvar's daughter Carolyn Wright has worked for the county since Oct. 4, 1993. She is a detention officer.

During World War II, the Air Force was under the control of the Army and known as the U.S. Army Air Force. In 1947, it became a separate branch, the U.S. Air Force.
