Sgt. Anthony "Gabe" Green, 28, of Yorktown was due home in about a month from a tour in Afghanistan when he was killed by a roadside bomb Friday.
The decorated Texas National Guard soldier grew up in Yorktown, where he played varsity football and married his high school sweetheart, Lindsey. Together they had two daughters Madison, 3, and Kaydance, 6.
"He always wanted to serve his country and he was very proud of what he was doing," Cornell Green, Green's father, said.
Green came from a family of servicemen. His brother Jacob served, their father, Cornell, was a Vietnam veteran, and his grandfather fought in World War II. He joined the service when he was still in high school after a lifetime of wanting to be a serviceman. He was assigned to the 143rd Infantry Detachment at Camp Mabry in Austin.
"We were very, very proud of him," his father said. "None of us were West Point men; We were Southern boys and we were taught to love our families and defend our country."
Green was known to be a working man, his father said. He worked on the Afflerbach farm in Yorktown when he wasn't deployed baling hay and raising cattle.
He was deployed and injured twice in the past five years. For his service he was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and a Combat Assault Badge. He was promoted upon his death.
"He could've stayed home on disability, but he wanted to go and do his job," his father said. "He didn't want to let anybody down."
Green was a member of an agriculture development team where he used his farming skills to help the local Afghan people learn irrigation techniques and care for their livestock.
"He was a grassroots farmer. He didn't mind taking his boots off and wading in the water and they respected him for that," his father said.
Funeral services are pending for Finch Funeral Home in Yorktown.
Green said he has already received overwhelming support from the community who hope to attend the funeral and honor Green's memory.
"He's no longer just my son," he said. "He belongs to the community."

October 20, 2009 at 8:40 a.m.There are a lot of good people in Yorktown. His sacrifice, is only one of many examples, of the great people of Yorktown.
They say, "it takes a village to raise a child". While nothing replaces the lost of a parent honoring their duty to God and country, I hope that these children always feel the love of a grateful nation. Every service member and close family member know, that it is our duty to be there for each other and each other's family.
As our servicemen and women support each other in battle, so too is it our duty to support each other's family battling the ultimate sacrifice.
In the course of time, I hope everyone that can be of assistance to this family is.
I'm sorry for your lost, God be with you.
