Paramedics took Joseph McLaurin to a local hospital on Wednesday after an early afternoon wreck on Main Street at Conti Lane.

Police cited the 26-year-old Victoria man for failing to yield and lacking auto insurance, Officer Shane Wallace said. Emergency room staff at Citizens Medical Center treated and released McLaurin for minor injuries just hours after the wreck. It's unknown if he wore a seatbelt.

McLaurin steered onto Main Street from Conti Lane and into the path of oncoming traffic, Wallace said. McLaurin's Saturn smashed into the passenger side of a northbound Chevrolet Impala driven by Jim Abernathey, a 74-year-old Palacios man.

"I tried to swerve around his car," Abernathey said after the wreck.

The collision forced Abernathey's Impala up and onto the curb across the street. McLaurin's Saturn stopped in the center turn lane and incurred extensive front end damage.

Abernathey did not seek medical treatment and said he felt fine. He wore a seatbelt during the wreck.

After the wreck, Abernathey talked via cell phone to a loved one. "Luckily, it was a glancing blow," he said, downplaying the damage to his vehicle's passenger side. "It could have been worse."
