The Victoria City-County Health Department will administer seasonal flu vaccinations on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The department has between 900 and 1,000 doses of the vaccine available, said Dr. Bain Cate, health department director, in an e-mail.

While doctors' offices and pharmacies in the area have been administering the vaccination since early August, the health department chose to wait until the official start of the flu season, he said.

"I have seen in past seasons people who receive the influenza vaccine early in the season, and end up getting it in late January or February of the same season, as the antibodies do wear off, apparently," he said.

The vaccine will be available while supplies last, Cate said.

Plans are to not purchase more seasonal flu vaccinations, Cate said.

"It looks like we will probably have a few hundred left over this year," he said. "A lot of our regular seasonal influenza vaccine patients have already received their vaccine at a pharmacy or private healthcare provide."
