Whataburger (Mockingbird and Navarro) honored Mary Hondlik last year on her 90th birthday by allowing a group to co-host a party with them. Where does Mary wish to have her birthday this year? You guessed it. And Whataburger employees Deborah and Linda are so thrilled to do it again. Not only that, but there are six regulars who eat there on Monday and Friday (each week), and our breakfast is "ready" when we arrive.

Recently, former Refugio County Treasurer Betty Greebon visited us, and she brought us a list of many instances in which good customer service occurred in Victoria. Greebon and her husband, Keith, have now lived in Victoria since 2001.

We've always had experiences with good and bad customer service, but before the recession, many of us - it seems - had mostly bad customer-service episodes. And there's nothing worse than walking away from some establishment after being treated poorly. We remember those experiences and the places they occurred, and we have a reluctance to return to those places and usually don't.

On the other hand, one gets a positive feeling after a good customer-service experience. And good service seems to be contagious - it catches on. Just think if everywhere we went, we were showered with exceptional customer service.

Good customer service makes you want to go back to that place to experience it again. So good customer service is memorable, probably more so than a bad experience.

We think the recession has made people think more about their jobs, empathize with each other's financial struggles and look at customers in a positive light. At least, we can make each other feel better by treating each other with respect and extending good service when possible. It all comes back in beneficial ways.

During the Great Depression, it was common for people who had very little to offer help in the form of food and service to others. Back then, we had full service gas stations with a smile. We are seeing some of this type service returning today.

For example, Greebon cited several establishments that "went the extra mile" to make her and her husband feel good and wanted.

We will publish these soon under "Good Customer Service" experiences.

More details will be made as we gather more of these deeds. If you have experienced good customer service, send them to us the same way you would send a letter to the editor.

We encourage the practice of good customer service. You can't go wrong with treating people special.

  • I recently purchased a new cell phone at Best Buy. I asked the clerk to make sure all my contacts were showing up on the new phone after she inserted the SIM card. She leaned over to the clerk next to her and said "I have to do this since this lady doesn't know how." I couldn't believe she said that as I was standing 2 feet away. I have more education than both of them and just wanted the phone checked before I left the store. I WILL NOT be purchasing anything else from there if that is how they treat customers.

  • Leroy's Plumbing, Moulton, did the electrical and plumbing when I built my home; 3 yrs later when I built a permanent fence around my yard, they came out and marked the electrical and plumbing lines so they wouldn't be cut--for free!
