Shiner graduate hits Trinity milestone

Chris Baer became only the 10th rusher in Trinity University's history to rush for more than 1,800 yards in a career with a 92-yard performance on Saturday against Sewanee: University of the South.

Baer, a senior from Shiner, scored two touchdowns in the 40-0 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win. His first touchdown came on a 30-yard run and then scored on a 1-yard run.

For the season, Baer leads Trinity with 388 yards rushing and three touchdowns. The Tigers (5-1, 2-1) also received production from Caleb Urban in the win. The Memorial graduate caught a 26-yard touchdown, ran the ball three times for 14 yards and had two more receptions to go along with his touchdown.

Dennis Grebe (Bay City) had seven tackles in the Trinity victory. The Tigers return to action on Saturday with a trip to Indiana to face DePauw University.

Offensive lineman Hank Gilley (St. Joseph) helped lead Midwestern State to 457 yards of total offense and a 38-7 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday in Wichita Falls. Gilley started and played the entire game for the Mustangs who knocked the Javelinas from the ranks of the unbeatens and improved their record to 6-2.

Aaron Buckley (Palacios) recorded three tackles and Tyler McAfee (Calhoun) caught one pass for five yards in the Javelinas' loss.

Da'Marcus Griggs (Bay City) caught six passes for 70 yards, including a 27-yard touchdown pass from Bradley George in Texas State's 34-28 win over Nicholls State on Saturday.

Brandon Brinkley (Bay City) had three tackles for the Houston defense as the Cougars beat Tulane 44-16 for their second straight win after being upset by UTEP. The Houston Cougars improved to 5-1 with the win and are now ranked No. 17.

Anthony Smith (Bay City) caught three passes for 60 yards and ran for 32 yards on 11 carries in Texas Lutheran's 53-18 loss to Incarnate Word. TLU falls to 0-6 with the loss while IWU improved to 4-4.

Rocky Vaclavick (Edna) had two tackles and Kyle Noack (Cuero) threw for six yards in Mary Hardin-Baylor's 17-14 loss to Mississippi College on Saturday. The defeat was the Cru's first of the season, dropping them to 5-1 on the season and out of the top-10 for the first time this season.

Tre Gray (Cuero) led the Richmond Spiders with six receptions in their 38-21 win over Maine on Saturday. Gray's six catches were good for 67 yards. Richmond (6-0) is ranked No. 1 in the The Sports Network Football Championship Subdivision poll.

D.J. Yendrey (Edna) participated in TCU's 44-6 win over Colorado State on Saturday. Yendrey, a true freshman, has recorded three tackles and sack this season for the No. 7-ranked Horned Frogs.

Soccer

Lauren Alkek (Memorial) had a shot on goal in Oklahoma's 1-0 double-overtime loss to Missouri and a shot in the Sooners' 2-1 loss to Kansas last week. Alkek has 12 shots this season for Oklahoma.

Volleyball

Nicole Cowan (Yoakum) contributed four digs and a kill in Mary Hardin-Baylor's 25-21, 25-10, 25-20 loss to McMurry University. Haley Phillips (Calhoun) had two kills, seven digs and 17 assists in Concordia's five-set win over the University of Texas at Tyler and also added eight digs in a three-set loss to the University of Texas at Dallas.
