YORKTOWN - The Friday Night Lights shone brightly on Wildcat Stadium, but an eerie silence prevailed at halftime of Yorktown's District 31-1A game against Runge.

The crowd stood in unison to honor Sgt. Anthony "Gabe" Green, who died of wounds suffered from an improvised explosive device on Friday, Oct. 16 in Afghanistan.

Veterans gathered around members of Green's family, who formed a circle on the field moments after Devan Danielle Banda was crowned Yorktown's Homecoming Queen.

The crowd listened to a brief synopsis of Green's life, which described his love for his family, his hometown and his country before the veterans released red and white balloons into the sky.

A moment of silence was observed in Green's honor before a single voice shouted out, "We love you, Lindsay," in reference to Green's widow.

Green played football at Yorktown and the Wildcats seemed to draw inspiration from the ceremony, outscoring Runge 34-0 in the second half to claim a 52-14 win.

"I think we used Sgt. Green," Yorktown senior Connor Krcha said. "We played this game in his honor and dedicated it to him."
