Saturday: Free candies. Restaurant closes at 5 p.m.

If the staff's neon-colored T-shirts didn't give it away, maybe it was the seasonal decor, or the extra attention management is giving to the week's menu.

Whatever the case, Jim's Big Burger is filled with a party atmosphere. And why not?

The locally-owned eatery has hit the big 3-0 and employees plan to celebrate all week, said Amy Wuest, who co-owns the restaurant with her sister, Peggy Broome.

The celebration includes T-shirt giveaways, discounted menu items and, one day, a barbershop chorus.

"It's a way of thanking past and present employees, customers, Victoria and the surrounding areas," Wuest said. "We have people come from all over."

The restaurant got its start in 1979, when Jim Bireley leased what was then The Burger Hut, Wuest said. He soon changed the name and, later, handed ownership over to his daughters, Wuest and Broome.

They remain in the burger business for two reasons, Wuest wrote in a news release: because their father gave them the opportunity, and they love hamburgers.

Jim's evolved over time, Wuest wrote, as the sisters purchased the property in 1992 and added on in 2006. It has also increased from two to 13 employees.

"Our employees are educated, highly motivated, personable and dedicated," she wrote. "They take care of business and each other. We are a team."

Running the business wasn't always easy, Broome said, especially when the sisterly duo was just starting out.

There were times they had $50 in their checking account, she said, and wouldn't pay themselves.

"We just paid the employees," she said. "It was scary for a while."

But they weathered the storm and continued on in the food industry.

Customers could ask the sisters why they've succeeded for three decades, but it isn't necessary.

The answer is printed on the back of the staff's celebration T-shirts "Great food, great service and great customers."
