The South Texas Farm and Ranch Show makes its way to Victoria Wednesday and Thursday, bringing with it more than 200 vendor booths sure to be jam-packed with information sheets, product samples and a giveaway or two.

But how does a business make itself shine when its booth is just one of many? David Brull, vice president of membership and marketing for the Trade Show Exhibitors Association, offers these tips:

Make the booth warm and inviting.

Think of it as your retail store. Is the set-up appealing to the eye? Well organized?

Make your message clear.

For every 10-by-10 exhibit space, you have three to four seconds to catch someone's eye. I once saw a packaging store booth made entirely out of boxes. You knew within those first few seconds what they did, what the product line looked like and whether you wanted to stop by that booth.

Pay close attention to what - if any - giveaways you offer.

Everyone's desk is cluttered with pens from various companies. If you do decide to give something away, make sure it's consistent with your brand and that there's a return on it. You don't want people stopping by simply to trick-or-treat.

Make sure those staffing the booth are warm and friendly.

They shouldn't eat, drink or talk on the phone while attending the booth. Attendants should invite people over to see what they have to offer, rather than stand with their arms crossed, waiting for others to come to them.

Gather contact information for potential customers.

You want to get a phone number or address, some way to get in touch with people again in the future. That might include a raffle, where people fill out slips, or having them fill out a form and later sending them a postcard with a discount offer.
