4-H Roundup: "I pledge my hands to larger service ."
Have you ever wondered what the Hs in 4-H stand for? If you ask any 4-H member in Victoria County, they will tell you that Head, Heart, Hands and Health serve as the core values of the program that members strive to perfect through fun and engaging programs.
This week's article is dedicated to the third H in the pledge, Hands. Members pledge their "hands to larger service" through various programs and activities that benefit their club, community, country and world. Here are a few community service projects that are being conducted by members in Victoria County:
Aaron and Sam Portis collect eyeglasses to donate to the Lions Club "Recycle for Sight" program. New, used, damaged glasses and/or cases may be donated by calling them at 361-782-0349. The glasses are sent to Corpus Christi for evaluation, boxing and shipping to donation sites, where they will be handed out to people who would otherwise not have glasses.
Tasha Kloesel, on behalf of the Victoria County 4-H Ambassadors, collects empty printer cartridges and used cell phones to recycle. Money she receives from the recycled products is put toward the 4-H Friends Helping Friends outreach program for Victoria school district fifth graders. Anyone interested in donating can contact Tasha at 361-576-4580.
Shelbie Van Beveren is collecting gently used or new children's books and stuffed animals to donate to the Victoria Partners for Children Rainbow Room. These items are provided to children while they are in the care of our local law enforcement and CPS officers. If you would like to make a donation, call Shelbie at 361-485-1229 to arrange a time for pick up.
Seth and Breana Tater collect clothing for homeless children in support of KidzConnection of Victoria. Everything is needed, from socks and tighty whities to school clothes. We will be clothing toddlers to seniors in high school, so please donate sizes 3T to 3X. Winter clothing is currently needed. The collection will run through Nov. 30.
The Victoria 4-H County Council officer team has set up a monthly club challenge to encourage club members to donate to the Dorothy H. O'Connor Pet Adoption Center. Each month features a specific item for the clubs to collect: October featured newspaper and kitty litter, while November encourages donations of high-efficiency laundry detergent and dish soap. To follow along with the monthly challenges, please visit us online at http://victoria-tx.tamu.edu.
The 18 counties that make up District 11 4-H are currently collecting pop tabs to donate to the Ronald McDonald house. This is one of the most enthusiastic collections going on in the county 4-H program. Clubs have already filled up two copy-paper boxes with tabs since the collection began in September. If you would like to contribute to this collection, you can drop off your donation to any 4-H member or to the extension office.
Everyone is encouraged to support these young people as they strive to make a difference in our community. If you have any questions about any of the projects listed above, or if you would like to make a donation, call Sarah Brandes at the Victoria County Extension Office at 361- 575-4581.
