The Victoria City-County Health Department and its sister organization, the Crossroads Public Health District, inspect places where food is served in Victoria, DeWitt, Jackson and Calhoun counties.

In the inspection reports, each violation in the Food Temperature/Time Requirements category is 5 demerits; in the Personnel/Handling/Source Requirements category, 4 demerits; and in the Facility and Equipment Requirements, 3 demerits. Zero is a perfect score while 100 demerits is the worst possible score.

Each Wednesday, the Advocate publishes inspection results from the previous week. All demerits are reported, but only those in the categories of Food Temperature/Time Requirements and Personnel/Handling/Source Requirements are detailed.

Monterrey Cafe, 723 Broadway St., in Port Lavaca. Demerits: 11. Cross-contamination of raw/cooked food. Failure to date/label food. One facility or equipment violation.

Church's Chicken, 206 state Highway 35 N., in Port Lavaca. Demerits: 10. Insufficient hot water supply pressure. Two facility or equipment violations.

J and T One Stop Kitchen, 512 Margie Tewmey St., in Magnolia Beach. Demerit: 10. Failure to label properly. Two facility and equipment violations.

Legend's, 1208 Marcus Navarro St., in Port Lavaca. Demerits: 9. Three facility or equipment violations.

McDonald's, 101 E. Broadway St., in Cuero. Demerits: 8. Improper handling of ready-to-eat food. Failure to document sanitizer use. No facility or equipment violations.

Dairy Queen, 1409 W. Austin St., in Port Lavaca. Demerits: 7. Inadequate hand washing technique. One facility or equipment violation.

Dick's Food Store, 202 Broadway Ave., in Seadrift. Demerits: 4. Expired food. No facility or equipment violations.

Re-inspections

Golden Corral, 5102 N. Navarro St. in Victoria. Inspected Oct. 6 with 21 demerits. Re-inspected Oct. 20, all violations corrected.
