REFUGIO - Refugio County commissioners voted 4-1 Tuesday to allow alcoholic beverages at the Refugio County Expo Center.

The commissioners heard the request weeks ago but postponed action until more information was provided, County Judge Rene Mascorro said.

County commissioner Gary Bourland was against lifting the alcohol ban because the venue was created for family environment, Mascorro said.

One alternative considered was to renovate the community center, which already allows for alcoholic beverages.

Renovation estimations ran close to $180,000, Mascorro said.

The expo center, which is less than five years old, was only used eight times last year by paying customers, he said.

Lifting the ban and utilizing what Refugio has would allow more residents and organizations to host their events in Refugio, he added.

"Over the last year I have had several inquiries from people planning events locally who expressed interest in renting the exposition center, but upon learning of the alcohol ban, changed their mind," he said.

The lifting of the ban went into effect immediately after the vote.
