PORT LAVACA - The Vietnamese Catholic community here is still recovering from the deaths of two women and injuries of others.
Catherine Tran, 59, and her mother, Cham Ngueyen, 90, were killed on their way to an annual religious festival, said Alex Hernandez, an attorney who represents Peter Pham, their grandson and nephew.
"This was horrible. They were going on a Catholic pilgrimage," Hernandez said. "It's a close-knit community."
The Rev. Dan Morales, pastor of Our Lady of the Gulf, said the women were on their way to Carthage, Mo., to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of Mary.
Parishioners were filled with shock and disbelief when they heard about the wreck, Morales said.
"This is painful for the family," he said. "But their faith is strong. I cannot stress enough how faith-filled this family is. They've dealt with this the best they can."
