For us, one of the most important pieces of the puzzle to our area's success is education. And Victoria College is aggressively making sure our youth coming out of high school will be ready for college and their future careers.
Victoria College received a $2.8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Part of the funds will go to Victoria College students seeking financial help, but part of the funds are going toward the hiring a College Access Resource and Success Center adviser for the Gonzales school district. The position will be in place for fall 2010.
Plans for the five-year grant include other area schools, including Calhoun and Victoria, where the college currently has long-distance learning centers. These additional advisers will be in place between 2010 and 2012.
The new Gonzales school district adviser will be on the Gonzales High School campus to help students with academics planning, college readiness testing, available scholarships and college enrollment.
Victoria College President Tom Butler said the program would have a significant impact on Victoria College while helping students acquire the education they seek.
We think this is a wonderful way to ensure our youth achieve good careers in our region, and we commend Victoria College for its work toward that goal.
