The search for a missing Navy T-34 training airplane continued off the coast of Rockport and Matagorda Island late Wednesday night.

Two people were aboard the plane, said Lt. Nick Leiter of the U.S. Coast Guard. Leiter declined to give names, citing the ongoing investigation.

Air traffic controllers lost contact with the plane, which flew as part of a routine training mission, at 3:20 p.m. Air traffic controllers then reported the news to a naval air station in Corpus Christi at 4 p.m., Leiter said.

Navy and Coast Guard aircraft searched east of Rockport and two miles off the Matagorda Island shoreline. A Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter also helped in the search.

Leiter said that search would continue Thursday morning if the missing plane remained lost.
