  • POLLING PLACE CHANGES

Voting Precinct No. 24 will be consolidated with Precinct No. 23.

Location of consolidated polling place: Precinct No. 2 Service Center (barn), 13323 Nursery Drive.

Friday marks the last day voters can vote during the extended voting period. With 11 amendments to the Texas Constitution on the ballot, it is very important that you vote.

Election Day is Tuesday.

The proposed constitutional amendments cover a wide range of topics. Property taxes, public access to beaches, adding universities to Texas' two tier one universities, veterans assistance, appraisal district processes, eminent domain and others are among the election's amendment topics.

George Matthews, Victoria County elections administrator, said a colleague of his said the amendments are issues we probably will have to live with for 20 years while elections of candidates on average we live with for four years.

So why shouldn't we get out and vote?

Yet only about 2 percent of the 51,000 registered voters have voted as of Wednesday.

"Seven percent is average for constitutional amendment elections," Matthews said. "We would have to get about 5 percent to come up to the average."

However, Victoria County, for the most part, is no different than the rest of the state except for places where rollback elections and mayoral elections are taking place.

"I'm afraid we won't get the 5 percent," he said.

Matthews noted that more than 1,400 mailed ballots were sent out.

Of those, he has received 721 back.

"We hope to get them all back by Tuesday," he said.

We urge you to vote. These amendments will have a great effect on all Texans.

Vote from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and Friday and again on Election Day, Tuesday.
