The search is under way for head football coaches at Victoria's two new high schools.
The Victoria school district is seeking applicants for the positions at Victoria East and Victoria West, which will open for the next school year.
"We want to get it out there so we can be done as soon as possible," said Mickey Finley, athletic director of the Victoria school district.
Finley, who is coaching the Memorial football team in its final season, said no coaches would be hired before the current season ends.
The Vipers play Converse Judson on Friday night at Memorial Stadium before closing out District 27-5A play on Friday, Nov. 6, at San Antonio East Central.
Memorial would qualify for the playoffs with a win over East Central.
Victoria East and Victoria West are expected to be classified as 4A schools when the University Interscholastic League releases its biennial realignment on Feb. 1.
The school district lists no specific application deadline or salary. The qualifications require candidates to have been a successful head coach for five years or a coordinator at a Class 5A or 4A program.
Coaches currently employed by the Victoria school district who wish to apply are asked to submit a letter of interest and updated resume.
Finley is expected to continue in his role as athletic director next season. He has also been the head football coach at Memorial for three seasons.
Finley said a screening committee would likely be formed to review the applications. He hopes to expedite the process so the new coaches can begin their offseason programs.
"We want to have it all lined up," Finley said. "If we get through on Friday night, we want to be able to start the process on Monday morning."

November 6, 2009 at 4:41 p.m.The problem with your argument that the"Tallent just isn't there" isn't supported by any hard data. Sting has a point that you cant argue. There is no way there was some magic talent switch that was just shut off when Reeve left. Some coaches win and some don't. I personally feel that the coaches that strike fear into a player and earn there respect have winning records. Push overs like the coaching staff yourself included tend to loose and loose big. I know a viper that played for you and i spoke with him yesterday. And said that you where one of the biggest pushover coaches on the field when he played. And you didn't know it but very few of the players respected you, or the others in the coaching staff when you where there... And guess what y'all lost and lost allot!
Hey Sting maybe they will have something at Patti Waelder for you & your pea brain. Check my record you dip and compare it to yours, if you even have one. I am talking about my win/loss record against yours not our criminal records, you might have me there!LOL
November 6, 2009 at 4:16 p.m.Not likely KT, I wouldnt take a coaching job under Mickey Finley if it paid what he gets. The athletes in Memorial high are the same that where there 10-15 years ago under good coaches and they beat teams like Judson and Clark and Churchill and even competed with Aldine schools. The athletes are there the coaching is not. You cant tell me that they all left when Reeve did. They must have followed him then, cause he seems to win wherever he is. How bout you KT how are them Brahmas doing this year? Must have some sorry athletes there too huh!!! LOL
November 6, 2009 at 1:37 p.m.call me cosmo so you and I can have a cup of coffee together.
November 5, 2009 at 2:41 p.m.Kyle,
November 5, 2009 at 1:49 p.m.You are right about one thing the coaches we have are getting the most they can out of the kids. And thats all they are capable of if we had better coaching we would all be allot better off! With Reeve we had eight district champs in a row with the current crop of coaches we have had zero coincidence i think not!
Kyle,
November 5, 2009 at 1:44 p.m.What are you talking about. Would the same deal be true in your position I guess your folks where both non leaders and had you and now you are trying to be a coach but cant because of poor breading. I'm so glad you are in Hallettsville now please stay there and do not apply for the new coaching jobs here in Victoria! You know what they say once a loser always a loser!
I am not bashing memorial athletes. I just get sick of hearing that MHS ought to be winning more because of their athletes. For 5A, Victoria is below average for athletes. Wantabe CYFL coaches think they know what they are talking about and that makes me want to puke. Coach Finley and his staff work their butts off as well as the players. They are getting everything out of the athletes they have. Sting wants one of the head coaching jobs and cosmo's kid doesn't play on the sophomore team and all they want to do is bad mouth the coaches.
November 5, 2009 at 1:38 p.m.There is only one problem besides cosmopolitan and sting, and it happened on a dark night about 17-18 years ago. When a non-athlete mixes with another non-athlete(ex; cosmo and his wife) you get a non-athlete baby. Pretty simple!
November 5, 2009 at 1:21 p.m.Eww Wee its gettin hot in here. Hopefully this city will come together to make sure that the "UNTOUCHABLES" dont get a chance to ruin the new programs. Finley and his Apostles should head out.
November 5, 2009 at 11:54 a.m.It is unreal to me that KT would bad mouth the kids at Memorial when he was one of the main problems! You used to coach at Memorial! You are one of the coaches that where on board that brought Memorial football to the depressing state that it is currently in!
November 5, 2009 at 10:55 a.m.What was that Kyle?

November 5, 2009 at 10:24 a.m.You used to be a coach! Wow sting4life hit the nail on the head I used to play for Reeve. The deffrance is we knew we where going to win every time we got on the field! We never gave up! The kids from Memorial do not have this attitude! Ive asked Memorial players in the past y'all going to win Friday? We hope so....Go ask a kid that plays for Reeve what hes going to do on Friday night and hope there are no women and children around when he answers! Oh and KT you are prob one of the loser coach's that coached those memorial kids!
Yeah right, your saying that you never said there arent any athletes in Victoria that the coaches can only work with what they got. B/S you left Victoria and now you bad mouth the athletes, says alot Coach. I am sure if only Clint got that job in Beeville he would be talking trash too. It aint my fault....its those sorry athletes. B/S Reeve won with the same gene pool 10 years ago. Cause he is a good coach that can make athletes be winners. Go Brahmas..... Whats your record over there KT.
November 5, 2009 at 9:34 a.m.hey sting, I am not bad mouthing, I am just telling some of these idiots what kind of talent is in Victoria. Not even close to Judson's. Hope them ricebirds do well this week!
November 4, 2009 at 1:09 p.m.KTfootball,
November 4, 2009 at 1:06 p.m.Nice of you to bad mouth the kids you use to coach!!!!
I answered it, they just deleted it. I was trying to be as nice as I can. You are correct on consolidation killing the talent pool. This doesn't give ANY coach a chance. Where do you get your info on the talent at VHS?

November 4, 2009 at 10:08 a.m.Scarlett61, thank you for the clarification. I just misinterpreted what you wrote. Was not like that back in the day. No pass no play, and you better have had A's in conduct also!

November 3, 2009 at 1:43 p.m.You didn't answer my question. And I did start every game. On a team that could wipe the floor with any past or present memorial team. That being said you are wrong about the talent in Victoria! The only reason I say that we would have wiped the floor with Memorial is because the team has been severely crippled by consolidation and the lack of a coach that could make it work.

November 3, 2009 at 1:05 p.m.rukiddingme, the player that was allowed to play with a bracelet did not happen under this coaching staff. In fact this staff has released plenty of athletes that have been in trouble with the law.
November 3, 2009 at 1:02 p.m.Matt Ocker, I'm wondering the same thing. All you stated was that you did not play football in HS and you get deleted??

November 3, 2009 at 12:51 p.m.The comment " People in Victoria need to make up their minds. You either want respectable responsible young women and men (on and off the field) or you want to win everything. With the mentality of society today you are very seldom going to get both" was not directed at Converse Judson. It was directed at Victoria which has been known to pamper the ill-behaved good athlete just to keep them playing football. While the disciplined students who are just as good wind up not playing or going to school somewhere else.

November 3, 2009 at 12:13 p.m.When and who did you play for? You talk a big game but i bet you didn't win a game in high school! And I guarantee you there is talent walking the halls. IT may not be the talent that you want though when times are bad and a program isn't doing well the guys that are on the fence about playing aren't going to!

November 3, 2009 at 11:58 a.m.Just curious, have been away for years. What is the Youth Football scene like in Victoria? Grades 1-5 and Jr High? I live out of state and there are some very successful programs around here. One thing I see in common is an investment in youth football starting very early. The high school staffs are involved. The kids can't wait until the day when they can put the jersey on and play in the big stadium. If Judson is your yardstick, I bet you would find that they have an advanced youth program. In general, you can't start in 9th grade - you are already way behind.

November 3, 2009 at 8:52 a.m.Scarlett61, are you implying that the young ladies and gentleman that attend and play sports at Converse Judson are not respectful and responsible young adults?
November 2, 2009 at 7:38 p.m.Track season isn't until the spring. So if they are playing football until November that still gives them 2-3 months to focus on track before the season really begins. Cross country is a different story since its season coincides with football. What about these smaller towns like Refugio, Woodsboro, Bloomington, Edna, Cuero? There are kids who run cross country, play football, and play in the band at half time. Sorry Victoria is too small to play it against the 'pull" that Converse-Judson gets out of San Antonio. People in Victoria need to make up their minds. You either want respectable responsible young women and men (on and off the field) or you want to win everything. With the mentality of society today you are very seldom going to get both,
November 2, 2009 at 4:52 p.m.Some of you have to remember that Finley took over a program that was RAN into the ground by Jerry Campbell. The program was at an all time low at the time. The Vipers aren't an elite team but they are better than what they were, and I have been following them since their existence. I went to the first game against Taft in San Antonio and after watching that game I would have never thought the Vipers would be withing a TD of Wagner, and within 10 points of Judson. That shows improvement! Too bad, we won't really know how much the Vipers could have improved going into next season because of the building of the new schools.
I am looking forward to East & West though!
November 2, 2009 at 4:46 p.m.kt>> boys track??! visd has one?
a kid wants to feel wanted/accepted. a kid will suck it up when its a good coach, even on the bench. a kid will play hard when the coach is knowledgable. these are kids who need a little nurture and guidance.
boys track has no coach till fball is over. none. then they run jv. yes jv. then the boys are slim picking and the coach is forced to pick football players who hadnt run all track season. they get smoked!
if we keep the same people on top we will have the same idealogy at 2 campus'. imo.
The new schools need to come out competitive from the get go. Otherwise it will be years of subpar participation.
thank goodness basketball is here!!! heck yea...
November 2, 2009 at 2:52 p.m.KT...don't worry I am sure you have a job!
Puhleeze, lets really save money and put basketball coaches Jimenez/Grammer as head coach for football and I bet they will do just as good or BETTER! theorically though that won't happen but their teams always make the playoffs. They install character, pride, discpline. Even Mike Smith from golf will get results, lol.
The kids played their butts off and it wasn't anything special the coaches did it was the Seniors last home game and for that matter everyone's last for a viper. Also KT, you been to CYFL game??? More people probably watching than the HS team go to a Seniors game watch the STORM/TIGERCATS/TITANS you will be impressed. Maybe not!
November 2, 2009 at 2:36 p.m.kt, I think the point has been made before that many students don't want to play for these coaches. It's not that there's no talent, just that there's no talent that wants to play for these guys.

November 2, 2009 at 1:38 p.m.Director of Bands - West High School posted 10/30
So apparently East has a band director already or it hasn't posted. Odd that both football h/c spots were open the same day. It's gonna move fast. Hold on.
October 31, 2009 at 8:35 a.m.I couldn't agree more with both of your points Matt Ocker. Unfortnately, having or applying "good conscience" does not seem to be an inherent characteristic of the current AD.
As far as autonomy goes at VISD for a coordinator, make no mistake, all decisions are made by the AD. Maybe at other school districts AD's trust their coordinators.
October 31, 2009 at 8:09 a.m.visd, please do not let finley have anything to do with the hiring of the two new head coaches.
the man has shown he has no business running a 5A program.
October 31, 2009 at 1:11 a.m.I'm from CC. I didnt know Victoria was building two new schools? Can someone fill me in with why and some details?
October 30, 2009 at 11:42 p.m.The criteria is troubling on two fronts.
1. If Mickey Finley is indeed going to be the AD, how can he, in good conscience, search for coaches using criteria that would have prevented him from attaining his current job?
2. Why is a coordinator being shown preference over a head coach from lower classifications? Honestly, how much autonomy does a HS coordinator really have?
October 30, 2009 at 5:45 p.m.Any bets on tonights game? I,ll take Judson and give you 40 points
October 30, 2009 at 5:33 p.m.My fear is that it has already been decided who will be the new head coaches at the two new high schools and the application process is just a mandatory formality. In My opinion, the football program hasnt show any improvement in the last 3 years under Finley and his staff. One then has to ask these questions. 1. Is there no talented football players at Memorial High School, or 2. Have the players received poor coaching? Making the playoffs as a 4th place team in a weak district isnt what i would call a sucessful program. In my opinion its time for a clean sweep of coaches. Playing football isnt the most important thing you will ever do, but its something that if you play, you will remember all your life. These kids deserve better is all i,m trying to say.
October 30, 2009 at 5:24 p.m.The search is on. Better search outside of the Viper field house. We have seen what they are (not) capable of.
October 30, 2009 at 1:15 p.m.Why not the AD's position also? What are VISD policy on that--I bet other coaches know or will probably leave.
AD position is just administrator not a coaching job so why does it have to be a football coach? which is the norm, hire a business major with a Masters and see what they can set up. Similar to a GM in pro sports.
