  • Converse Judson at Memorial, 7:30 p.m., Friday

Memorial football has never, and will never have the tradition of Converse Judson, but it does have an opportunity to beat the Rockets.

The Vipers, 0-2 all-time against Judson and playing in their final year before splitting into two schools, comes into Friday's District 27-5A game with a 3-2 district mark while Judson is 5-0. Memorial is in a tie for fourth place with San Antonio East Central. A win over Judson would do nothing to secure a playoff spot, but it could give the Vipers confidence going into a must-win game against the Hornets next week.

"They expect to win every time they take the field," said Memorial head coach Mickey Finley. "I've been on both sides of that and I know that it's a great weapon for them. It doesn't matter who is on the other side of the line of scrimmage, all Judson teams go out there with a winning attitude. That's something we're going to have to overcome and need ourselves to have in order to win the game."

Judson is outscoring its district opponents 231-65 this season and is coming off a 46-30 win over East Central last Friday. Quaylon Jones leads the Rockets with 1,045 yards rushing and 13 touchdowns, while quarterback Cody Boswell has thrown for four touchdowns and rushed for four touchdowns.

"We are going to have to do a great job of assignment defense," said Finley of stopping the Rockets offense which has gained 362 yards per game. "They have tons of speed and can magnify the smallest of mistakes in alignments or guessing by defenses. What is an 8-yard gain for some teams when you make a mistake turns into a touchdown for a team like Judson."

Memorial's offense isn't far behind Judson's, gaining 2,562 yards in eight games this season. O.J. Hughes went over 1,000 yards rushing for the second straight season last week and is now up to 1,012 yards on the ground. Hughes also rushed for three touchdowns, but it was the supporting cast of rushers who stepped up to take pressure off Hughes. Fullback Travis Edwards ran for 90 yards on 14 carries and Roderick Warren scored two touchdowns in the 35-17 win over the Mustangs. Finley said having several different threats has been beneficial to the success of the Vipers and is going to be needed against the Rockets' defense.

"Judson gets to the ball in a hurry, so we're going to have to continue or blocks until the play is over," Finley said. "We can't just expect O.J. to make one person miss and then score a touchdown. No one can just focus on O.J. anymore. We're getting a lot more deep into our playbook this year because of that."

Notes

Regardless of the outcome of Friday's game, Memorial's playoff fate will come against East Central next week. The winner of that game will earn the fourth spot out of District 27-5A... Judson holds its 2-0 record over Memorial with wins coming last season and in 2002. The Rockets downed the Vipers 58-0 on Halloween last year and ended their season in 2002 with a 58-21 Division I, quarterfinal win... Updates from the game will be available at www.victoriaadvocate.com and www.twitter.com/wes bloomquist... The game will be broadcast on KVNN, 1340 AM... Tickets are on sale from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Ticket prices are $5 for general admission, and $3 for students. All tickets at the gate will be $6.

  • Wire5050- keep your negative comments to yourself. The kids have enough problems to handle without you putting them down even more. Yes, Bloomington hasn't had a good season for some years. But thats not what it's all about. The boys that stick it week after week deserve credit. They are not giveing up no matter what the scoreboard says. It will come around. So if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. You probably don't have anyone that plays for them or even know anyone there.

  • Oh, I've moved on. I feel like I am the only one that has supported the Vipers the last 10 years...or at least openly admitted it LOL

I'm a football fan in general. I went to the first Viper game against Midland Lee in 2000 in San Antonio and its funny that the last Viper game could be in San Antonio again...against East Central. I am going to try and make that one.

I know the whole "redrage" is over, but that is my screenname when I talk HS sports because that was my school.

  • Red Rage, consider moving on. The Alan Weddell era is over (generally lost to Carroll) and the Mark Reeve era is over. Yesterday is gone. You can't get it back. Look foward with a positive attitude. Victoria has the ability to exceed anything that occurred in the 80's and 90's.

  • No offense Ringer because I think you are an awesome Viper supporter, but you cannot compare the tradition that Stroman and VHS had to what Memorial has now. Even though Stroman lost most of their games in the 90s they always had the fans backing them 100% win or lose. They even came up with their own little slogan "Stroman, Texas". Raider fans had a lot of pride in their school, more than VHS I would say and I went to VHS.

VHS would have more fans in the stands at away games than the home teams for a lot of games. I've gone to several MHS games in San Antonio and its sad how little people travel to see the Vipers play. I remember VHS would fill up the stands in Corpus, Alice, and Austin. You don't see that anymore with MHS. When I was a senior at VHS, we had more fans at a game in CC against King, and it was King's homecoming!

I am ready for East & West. The whole Memorial experience has been a disaster. I'm hoping that East & West bring back the PRIDE that Victoria once had in its teams!

  • To APAWPA......What you say is reasonable. I think that is the way I am going to look at it. Thank You.
Your blog reminded me of Texas getting beat by Texas Tech last year.

  • May I remind some of you, from the 1950's to this current date I have personally witnessed many upsets in football at all levels. I myself have played in games of such. These upsets occur at the high school level, the college level and the pro level. Have you ever seen the Texas Longhorns upset? Have you ever seen the Dallas Cowboys upset? The reason we refer to it at an "upset" is because it is not likely. However, it is possible. Tonight Memorial plays Judson and it is likely Judson will win, but perhaps, just perhaps Memorial will upset Judson. Folks, that's why we will play the game tonight, to find out for sure. As for me, I hoping for a upset. In reality, it is possible and it just seems to make sense to pull for Memorial since this is my home.

  • Sting4life you get it also. All what we had left in 2000. What is going on now is just a school board agenda for funding. BTW Ringer if you think that losing records are a good thing for traditions move to Bloomington. At Memorial they should be winning every year with the talent we have. I dont want to here that we dont have it we do have the talent, just they are not coached properly. We have enough kids for 2 freshman teams and 2 jv teams and enough kids on each team so noone plays both ways. Numbers and atheletes are there. You figure out what the problem is. Im not down on the Vipers im down on how VISD has made this school a laughing stock.

  • Tradition. Hah, all this town does is try and get rid of any tradition. There is no tradition in Memorial what so ever. The tradition was robbed in 2000.

    October 30, 2009 at 8:59 a.m.

  • The first sentence says everything. We dont have any tradition right now, maybe with the new schools and new coaching we can get a good winning tradition and put Victoria back on the map for public school football. As far as an upset goes you may see the toothfariy before we beat Judson.
