The Crossroads region is nearing the end of its boll weevil issues and will hopefully see eradication within a year or two, said Jeff Nunley, executive director of the South Texas Cotton and Grain Association.

Victoria County sits in the "South Texas/Winter Garden Zone," he said, which joined the eradication program in 1996. While numbers are down dramatically in most parts of the zone, people caught about 150,000 boll weevils in Uvalde this year, Nunley said.

That number is up from other areas, he said, explaining that, several weeks ago, people found about 15,000 boll weevils in Uvalde, but only 10 from the zone's remaining 32 counties.

"They're just isolated out in that area," he said.

The Upper Coastal Bend eradication zone, which is near Houston, began its program in 2002 and has caught only 47 boll weevils this year, Nunley added.

Texas has spent more than $1 billion on the eradication project, he said, and the Texas/Winter Garden Zone has probably spent close to $200 million. It's a lot of money, Nunley said, but worth the expense.

"We haven't had economic damage from boll weevils in the area in years," he said.
