PORT LAVACA - The Calhoun County Juvenile Probation Department's boot camp reopens Monday.

The Juvenile Probation Board suspended the program at the beginning of the school year, after the county considered cutting funding, Judge Alex Hernandez said.

Calhoun County school district Superintendent Larry Nichols credits the boot camp with helping to keep district drop-out rates low.

The boot camp starts at 7 a.m. Monday with three students who have been expelled from district high schools, said Louis Leija, chief juvenile probation officer.

Because of legal concerns, the boot camp will be open only to expelled students who have been ordered to participate by a judge, Leija said.
