Cuero coach Mark Reeve wasn't sure what to expect from his team in its season-opening football game at Beeville.

The Gobblers returned very few starters from last year's Class 3A, Division I semifinal team and had to deal with the death of senior Cole Pargmann just days before beginning workouts.

But Cuero got the season off to a good start, capturing a 34-10 win over the Trojans on Friday night.

"I thought we played real well," Reeve said. "We had a lot of kids playing on both sides of the ball. Considering we were playing against an offense we hadn't seen, I was really pleased with our defense.

"Our kicking game was tremendous," he added. "They were always starting deep in their territory. That really helped our defense."

The Gobblers performance against Beeville led to their selection by Texas Football magazine as the Class 3A Army Strong Team of the Week.

"We don't have the numbers so this group is all going to have to play, whether it's on special teams or as a pass rusher," Reeve said. "These kids really enjoy each other. They like to practice together and they like to play. It's a good atmosphere." Reeve said the loss of Pargmann taught his players an important lesson.

"It's helped pull all the kids together," Reeve said. "The kids realize the relationships they have with their teammates are the most important part of any team."
