Happy hump day!

Our question of the day today deals with gangs in Victoria. Reporter Leslie Wilber takes a look at the situation in an article in today's Advocate.

How widespread do you think the problem is?

We'd like to know what you think. I'll be at B&D Cafe until 9 a.m., then at the Country Corner Cafe in Shiner until 11. Stop by and let me know what you think.

See you soon.

What's a ranging reporter? These reporters go out into the community, regularly filing live reports, photos and video from around the Crossroads region. To contact Sonny Long, e-mail slong@vicad.com or just add a comment to this story.

  • Zero, While I agree with everything that you mentioned, I just wanted to point out one thing.

"What did the family do to get their house shot at every night for two weeks?"

If this in reference to the article about the family who's house was shot at several times (this was months ago)...It's because there are gang members living in the house. Just wanted to point that out since I don't like people trying to play the victim role.

  • Geez, the troll is setting there lhao, stirring stuff up.

To quote BigJ, ( not exact words), "anyone that calls anyone a racist is a racist themselves"

  • soybomb...The feelings people in Victoria have for your heros, gangs, has NOTHING to do with the president. It's just like I don't like Kia automobiles and I don't like liver and onions. I dislike both but for vastly different reasons. If you're trying to pass yourself as an intellectual -- "im sure you dont like our new president for all these b-s reasons but yu kno and i kno the real reason.and that is very unpatriotic of you to hate our president" and "i can read your Bull with my eyes closed.." you might try understanding what others have actually posted. YOU are the only one to equate blacks or hispanics with gangs. Unless I miss my guess, the president doesn't have anything to do with gang activity in Victoria, Texas. There's a lot about which to disagree with the president, but local gangs aren't on the list.

I owe BigJ an apology. I didn't think anyone could make his grammar and spelling skills seem sophisticated, but YOU take the prize. BigJ, I am sorry; please accept my apology.

  • Gangs are our Friends! (said in a happy pre-school TV program voice)

    THEY ARE NOT!!!

Gangs are a perversion of family and social order. They exist for criminal activity--providing "security" for drug and gun runners, human traffickers as well engaging in their own drug and drug distribution, loan sharking and extortion activities--not to mention the sadistic, mindless and criminal violence that is a hallmark of ALL gang activity.

The tagging not only defaces public and private property, they also create de facto minefields for any poor innocent who crosses the gangstas on "their" turf. Gangs serve no good purpose socially or morally. They must be eradicated.

Okay, but I came from Texas. In the meantime, how about YOU try to work on some language skills?

  • No, really, where is the DA's task force on gangs? Where is the long range plan for dealing with the gang problem?

Where are Steve Tyler and Eli Garza and their minions (in print or otherwise) explaining how they are going to take on the gang problem in Victoria?

Come on, Zorro! Share you insights into the workings of the Victoria DA's office. Give us some good news that we will soon be relieved of the omni-present gang problem. The lack of information coming from the DA COULD INDICATE that Tyler really doesn't give a hoot about gangs ... unless they include the PC. Great world we live in were real danager of assault or res burg rises, but the DA is off in "la la land" in trumping up high crimes and misdeamenors against the cops.

  • Victoria gangsters have a wide variety of hangouts: they aren't just at the bars. Try looking at Riverside park at dusk, the mall, and just about every corner with a liquor store or check-cashing place. You can see the tags in the nicest neighborhoods, usually on the back of street signs or on the fire hydrants. In the poorer parts of town the tags are more brazen, but they are the same marks. Wake up, Victoria. Rousting a few guys dealing from their trunks or congregating in the park isn't going to solve this problem. It will only push it somewhere else temporarily until they get cut loose and pick it up again. Sustained and systematic enforcement from the DA and PD is the only thing that will beat this back. Where is the DA's task force on gangs?

I so agree. unless bars are closed such as the one mentioned gangs will still be much alive. I was at one local junior high and was appaulled by kids with pants sagging i really thought schools were going to enforce a no tolerant issue on this. Guess not. I guess i should not be surprised.

  • JackDeuce..."Let's exterminate these vermin."

Careful about the vermin crack, Jack. In another thread, I described'em as having the conscience of a rattlesnake and I got deleted. Somebody, somewhere seems to think that the members of gangs are valuable, upstanding members of society and have some redeeming human qualities. I would challenge that.

  • It is a big problem that is caused and affected by a number of things .When people are taught that this is the only way, then it can easily become the only way. Children have to feel love and attention somewhere. We as adults must always do our part to encourage positive behavior. We must tell all children that they can become more and that what has held their family down doesnt have to hold them down.Life is already filled with things that would hold the youth down ,they should not be held down also by the decisions that they make . I woulld encourage the youth to know that one is accountable for everything they do ,so be smart about what you do. Because once something is done or said it can not be taken back.

  • It is a great big problem that no body recognizes, don't the law enforcement addresses, and we are on the major highway from hell to the world of transporting drugs and criminal activities.

  • it's a bigger problem than what we realize!
