Q: I just got out of the military. I attended a lot of training schools while serving. Can any of that military training count as credit toward a bachelor's degree at UHV?
A: Yes. The University of Houston-Victoria, as with most institutions, may be able to offer you course credit for military training depending on the nature of the training, the material covered and your specific degree plan.
For example, military computer operations courses may count as credit toward a computer science or information technology degree, and language courses may count toward your core degree requirements.
Even some training you might not expect can count for course credit. The Army's "Ordinance Officer Basic" course may get you three credit hours in speech communications.
The American Council on Education offers guidelines to universities about how to apply these credits toward degree requirements. You can find general guidelines at militaryguides.acenet.edu.
ACE guidelines also will be included on your military training transcript, which you can acquire from your unit or through Veterans Affairs. Academic advisers at each of UHV's four schools will make the actual determination as to what military training will count toward academic credit. However, keep in mind that UHV personnel will make a final determination as to whether specific training classes will be counted as credit hours toward a degree.
Under a new state law, House Bill 269, many military training courses provide physical education credit, and a maximum of 12 hours of elective credits outside your major or minor can be earned for many advanced military training classes.
To find out how your specific military training can move you closer to a degree, consult with the academic advisers in the appropriate UHV school. You can reach an academic adviser by calling the UHV switchboard at 361-570-4848, or toll free at 1-877-970-4848. For more information about programs, visit www.uhv.edu.
