REFUGIO - Refugio City Council decided Tuesday to place Police Chief Chris Brock on administrative leave without pay pending the results of the criminal trial against him.
Brock was indicted on Sept. 2 on charges of stealing between $20,000 - $100,000 from a police forfeiture account.
"He hasn't been found guilty yet," said Mayor Ray Jaso. "We have to wait for that before we do anything else."
Jaso said Tuesday's council meeting was packed with residents anxious about the council's decision.
"The residents are just like us, we were shocked at the way things turned out," he said. "The council was concerned about how the community would react to it and they had to make a stand."
Detective Fernando Garcia will continue to serve as acting police chief until after the trial.
An arraignment hearing is set for Sept. 30.

September 11, 2009 at 10:15 a.m.Law enforcement protects it's own, when the dust settles, we will see if this just "goes away".I mean come on he is just a thief, it's not like he molested a child or anything...

September 10, 2009 at 12:52 p.m.When he comes to trial and IF he is found guilty, I'm positive he will get more than a slap on the wrist in Refugio County.
Just a little drain on society>
September 10, 2009 at 9:49 a.m.Just like a Mexican Law Man, this dude was corrupted by drug money.
Only difference is he wasn’t bribed, he’s also a thief, he stole the money.
September 9, 2009 at 10:30 p.m.It is amazing how you can claim he has committed no crimes in your opinion, but due to public opinion you must assist those in this witch hunt in destroying his life.
September 9, 2009 at 9:58 p.m.If he was caught with his hand in the cookie jar then he probably has had it there prior to this.. his hand will be slapped, that's it.
September 9, 2009 at 8:53 p.m.Now that's the difference between big city and small community......administrative leave with pay and administrative leave without pay.
September 9, 2009 at 7:58 p.m.You've been waiting to post that for awhile, huh? Give it a break already.
September 9, 2009 at 7:48 p.m.What a concept!!!! Even though he is "innocent until proven guilty", why would you want ANY accused man to be in charge of a police department?
