HOW TO CONTRIBUTE
Phone Commissioner Yanak at 361-575-4558.
Victoria County officials, agricultural groups and the Union Pacific Railroad can be role models for all of us. They know when times are hard the way to pull out of it is to help each other as much as possible.
And times are hard for ranchers and farmers because of the extreme heat and lack of rain during spring and summer -- food for livestock is hard to come by and expensive. Many ranchers have had to sell their herds to get by.
Now, hay for livestock during the winter will be available at affordable prices because of Hay Lift II, a project to help our area ranchers.
We admire and praise Union Pacific Railroad for shipping the bales -- free of freight charges -- from Arkansas to our ranchers in need here. The operation at this point is a total success with more and more people signing on to help out, according to Victoria County Commissioner Kevin Janak, who along with Extension Agent Joe Janak spearheaded the effort to acquire the hay. Also, a committee was instrumental in getting the hay here with members from the following: Independent Cattlemen's Association, South Texas Farm and Ranch Show, Victoria Beef Range and Pasture and the Farm Bureau.
When the trains arrive sometime during the week of Sept. 21, ranchers will be able to purchase the hay at $35 a bale. Locally, an average bale of hay costs between $75-$95 a bale on average. The train's cars will have 40 bales per car.
Last Thursday, Hay Lift II took more than 4,000 orders for bales.
The hay will be off-loaded at the Port of Victoria. Commissioner Janak said almost 30 supporters have donated equipment and other needed items for the project. And he said more are contributing every day.
"I'm just so thankful to Union Pacific for doing this. None of this would be possible without them," he said. "Ever since I have been visiting with any representative of UP, I have never found any who did not bend over backward for this Hay Lift II.
We agree. Thank you, Union Pacific, and all the others who jumped in to help this cause. You have saved the day.

We regret the misspelling of Commissioner Kevin Janak's and Extension Agent Joe Janak's last names. And we hope this did not cause any inconvenience to them. Again, we apologize for the error.
September 10, 2009 at 10:01 a.m.watch closely when something happens at certain Jr high. It has happen numerous--numerous of times....
Crain Jr high -- correct

I just think it comical when in the same article the VA spells it both ways as to think "well at least we are 50% right". lol
September 10, 2009 at 9:47 a.m.Excuse me if I make a comment on the "story" and not the spelling of Janak.
This is a perfect example of thinking outside the box.
What a great idea! Kudos to Janaks, Kevin and Joe and Independent Cattlemen's Association, South Texas Farm and Ranch Show, Victoria Beef Range and Pasture and the Farm Bureau.
September 10, 2009 at 6:34 a.m.Ms. McCall,

September 9, 2009 at 5:52 p.m.Okay kiddos,
JMoore--go stick your nose in the corner for snideness and personal attacks. This comment is not needed on this story.
All the others --Tell the VicAd to issue a correction to the story. As anyone should know and feel, it is incredibly horrible to read about oneself good or bad --preferably good only to find that the darn reporter or so called Editorial Board has botched it up once again. How embarrassing --Major EGG on face dudes.
At least they could correct the online story quickly --they delete faster than that. So Shame on the VicAd for botching a great story.
Kuddos to all involved to making a great thing happen.
Apologize VicAd and REPRINT.
