Ella Schorlemmer Elementary School Dedication
Ella Schorlemmer Elementary School
2564 Mallette Road
2 p.m. Sept. 20
Parking is limited at the school so shuttle buses will be provided. Shuttles will depart from Vickers Elementary School, 702 Glascow St., beginning at 1:20 p.m.
Shuttles will return all visitors to their parking sites after each of the dedication ceremonies.
The South Texas native who at one time dreaded school had a school building named in his honor Sunday afternoon.
The dedication for Rodolfo Torres Elementary School began with students welcoming a auditorium packed with people to the new building.
"We've been in school for only three weeks and it still has that new school smell," said Alyssa Ramos, a fifth-grade student who welcomed the crowd of about 250 teachers, architects, public officials and others.
"These are exciting times for Victoria and Victoria ISD as well," said Lou Svetlik, president of the Victoria Independent School District Board of Trustees. "We are proud to present this new school to the people of Victoria to our children and to generations to come."
The new building cost $9,886,337 and can house 470 students.
Torres, a 47-year Victoria educator, took to the podium with an unplanned speech and spoke of his pathway to attain an education.
"This little country boy was ready to go home every single hour," Rodolfo Torres said about attending high school. "Somehow, I went through high school and I don't know how. The grace of God that's how. There has to be determination to be and do what you want. Without that you're not going to make it."
The crowd gave a standing ovation as Torres left the stage.
"As long as I'm here and they're here we will work to honor your name," said Sherry Gorsuch, the school's principal after three rows of teachers in teal blue and gold (the school's colors) gave a lively cheer.
"The kids love it here and they're taking real good care of everything," said Sherry Rainosek, school librarian.
Coincidentally, Torres gave Rainosek her first teaching job and now, years later, she plans on ending her career in the school that bears his name.
"He's just a wonderful man and I really enjoyed working with him," she said. "All he ever cared about was the kids."

Scarlett61, THANK YOU!!!! There is nothing wrong with that school or the teachers. My son leaves every morning with a smile on his face and I pick him up with a smile on his face. He loves Torres and I do too!!! Thank you VISD for such a great, up lifting, safe school and great TEACHERS!! Mrs. Patek You ROCK!!!
September 16, 2009 at 8:31 a.m.RUKIDDINGME...where did you get your information about the gym only being built to hold 56 children? I know of very few elementary schools that have that small of numbers per grade level. Even with the 2 new schools. I was under the impression that all of the "gyms" were basically the same size but some still have to accommodate as many as 85-90 students with only 1 certified PE teacher and 1 aide. Tell you what be glad Torres at least has a fence. The grass will get there whether they "plant" it or not. But you can't grow a fence for the kids safety.
September 15, 2009 at 7:31 p.m.My son has never come home with mud on his schools!!! OMG, get over whatever you are on. Leave these teacher alone and let them teach!! Leave the kids alone they are already going to have enough trouble in this world with people like yall down gradeing them.
September 15, 2009 at 12:41 p.m."The kids have to walk in circles in the mud for PE"...Don't they have a gym? It was my understanding that every elementary school had to have a gym for students to use indoors. Plus any new facility is going to have a few kinks to be worked out. Give them some time to fix it before we all jump on the already heavily loaded VISD GRIPE Wagon.
September 15, 2009 at 11:41 a.m.stupidity reigns the region!
September 15, 2009 at 11:12 a.m.Bobcats86 and jenna you hit the nail on the head with that one.
September 15, 2009 at 10:30 a.m.The president of the board of trustees for VISD said he was proud to present this school to the people and students? I've heard so many bad things about this school. The limited parking means you cant get down after school and visit with the teachers. The students have to walk in circles for P.E or recess because the playground is covered in mud because it rained and is all dirt.
September 15, 2009 at 10:15 a.m.I don't see any male teachers in that photo. I insist they shut down the school until I see a male teacher in a photo!! If you could produce a photo of a minority male teacher, my comrades and I would be satisfied.
Strength through Unity, Unity through Strength!
(PS - I prefer wooden chairs to metal chairs.)
September 15, 2009 at 10:14 a.m.very racist
September 15, 2009 at 9:13 a.m.Sounds like a bunch of pissed off democrats.Just go to your best play " THE RACE CARD".
September 15, 2009 at 8:48 a.m.Fatboy and Mommy:
September 15, 2009 at 7:45 a.m.The fact that you even NOTICED the race of the women in the photograph(bet you didn't notice there were no men in the photo...does this mean VISD is guilty of gender discrimination as well?) just tells me that YOU are the racist ones.
My son goes to that school and I love it. Does it really matter what race a teacher is? I rather him go and get an good education no matter what race the teacher is. He loves it and I love it. Can't ask for a better school, or teacher!!
September 15, 2009 at 7:23 a.m.fatboy___I could ask the same about nurses, doctors, laywers, etc.. But, I won't. I will say tho that a person, no matter what skin color they are. Chooses the field of work to go into. So maybe the black like a different field of work. Like maybe there are more white people that apply for the teacher jobs, and more black people apply for the nursing jobs. Get the point. It takes an appication to be filled out for the job to get the job, or even be choosen for the job.
September 15, 2009 at 7:14 a.m.Why are you so on what color the skin is. We are not to judge by the skin color in the work places also. We are to look at what the person is able to do, and how long they have done it, and how well they do it.
Stop putting color into the picture. Be proud that teachers still want to teach our children, and are not looking for other means of work. At least we got teachers welling to teach with the low pay they still get.
I tell you, you need to get a life for sure.
Teachers, thank you for teaching all the children that deserve a chance in life, (and that includes the blacks fatboy).
Fatboy, I thought the same thing when I saw the picture. I bet that many qualified black and hispanic teachers do apply. I think Victoria got in trouble for this before.
September 14, 2009 at 11:49 p.m.In compliance with No Child Left Behind every teacher MUST be highly qualified to teach their subject area or grade level. Please do not assume that just because there are no Hispanics or African Americans in that picture that VISD does not hire them. Please also understand that the principals are the ones who do the interviewing and hiring for their individual campuses. So if you have a problem with who is or is not teaching on that campus, you need to direct that question to that campus. And lastly, what difference does it make what the race of the students at the campus are? I am fed up with people trashing VISD and constantly complaining about this or that. If you can't be part of the solution, than don't be part of the problem. Signed a VERY PROUD VISD Educator of 20+ years.
September 14, 2009 at 11:48 a.m.Do any white kids go to Torres?
September 14, 2009 at 11:30 a.m.just looking at the pic does Mr. Moore or Mr. Chapa not hire black or hispanic teachers? do they apply?
