It's homecoming time again at Memorial High School. The last one, actually.
From the cow bells, to the huge flower, to the ribbons hanging down, mums have come a long way in Texas.
Press-on letters have long replaced the old-school way of making letters with glitter and Elmer's Glue.
Mums just keep getting bigger, said H. Clay Atchison, owner of McAdams Floral in Victoria.
The longest mum Atchison ever made was about 50 inches. The girl was 5-foot, 11-inches tall.
Lately, he's noticed new trends among mums.
"Bling is big," he said. "It's been pretty much the hot thing for the last couple of seasons- feathers, crystals, blue sequin butterflies, zebra and leopard prints."
He makes nearly 300 mums a year.
If you want a customized mum, he advises to not wait until the week of homecoming. Order yours a week or two before.
7 things to know about mums
1. If you are making a mum for the first time, it will take you between four to six hours.
2. Mums are mostly found in Texas, with the exception to towns close to the state border in Oklahoma, New Mexico and Louisiana.
3. Back in the 1940s, mums were made of fresh flowers instead of the huge, fake ones used today.
4. Mums grew in size over time. In the 40s, they were 16 inches long, or about the same size as a garter for the boys' today. In the 1970s, mums grew to about 24 inches. Today, they are a whopping 36 inches on average.
5. Garters for boys didn't become popular until the late 1980s.
6. Mums will cost anywhere between $40 and $100. Some passionate mum-buyers in larger cities pay up to $400.
7. Today's mum decorations include ribbons with helmets, cowbells, teddy bears, feathers, pennants, battery-operated lights, glittery stars, chains, whistles, beads, candy, musical notes and instruments.
