Corpus Christi Moody vs. MemorialTime: 7:30 p.m. Friday at Memorial Stadium
Last year's score: Memorial 35, Moody 13
Vipers lead all-time series 3-2

Radio: KVNN, 1340 AM
It's no secret the Memorial Vipers are in need of a win.
The team is 0-2 after losing to El Campo last week and opening the season with a loss to San Antonio Taft. Now, with Corpus Christi Moody coming to Memorial Stadium for the Vipers' last non-district game of the season, creating positive momentum is a must.
"We really have to have a good game to gain some confidence right now," said Memorial head coach Mickey Finley. "You can tell our confidence is at a low right now on both sides of the ball. When we get a positive we are going to have to build on it."
Who's coming to town
Moody comes into Victoria with a 1-2 record and hasn't made the playoffs since 2004. The Trojans opened their season with a win over Kingsville, but have since lost to District 27-5A's Corpus Christi King and Class 3A's Sinton. Moody, which was in District 28-5A and District 29-5A from 2002-2005 with Memorial, is coming off a 1-5 District 30-4A campaign last season.
Junior quarterback Dorian Johnson has thrown for 216 yards and three touchdowns the past two games. He has also run for two touchdowns and is his team's leading rusher.
Moody has thrown the ball 31 times in the past two games and could go after the Vipers secondary that allowed two touchdown passes at Taft and saw El Campo go 4-for-5 through the air.
"They run a spread offense and will try to throw the ball a lot," said Finley of Moody.
Vipers need to reverse turnover ratio
The Vipers have committed five turnovers in their first two games of the season and have yet to create a change of possession on defense.
"We'd like to get a turnover every play," Finley said. "We have to line up right and be in the right position. When you do that, turnovers tend to take care of themselves.
"We haven't had to punt very many times this season. We're either turning it over or scoring right now."
Seeing less yellow
Being put in long yardage situations has been a common experience for Memorial this season. The team committed eight penalties against Taft and nine last week against El Campo. In all, the Vipers have been flagged for 160 yards on the 19 penalties. Their opponents have remained more disciplined, with 104 negative yards on 11 flags.
"We've done some good things, but penalties are taking their toll on us," Finley said. "We we seeing 1st-and-15s and 1st-and-20s in the first half against El Campo and we can't have that if we want to win. We have to cut out the silly stuff."
Getting offensive
O.J. Hughes leads the Vipers with 189 yards rushing on 35 carries this year. Hughes scored a touchdown last week from the quarterback position and is expected to see more snaps in the shotgun formation.
Memorial starting quarterback Jared Dolezal has rushed for 142 yards and a team-leading two touchdowns, but still needs to find his groove throwing the ball. Dolezal, a junior, is 9-for-29 through the air and has thrown four interceptions. Roderick Warren leads the team with three catches for 75 yards, while tight ends Zach Mueller and Austin Bivins each have two receptions. Freshman Brandon Salazar has caught two passes for 40 yards, including Memorial's only reception last week against El Campo.
Notes
Memorial will celebrate homecoming before the game... Tickets remain on sale at the athletic office on Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $6 for reserved, $5 for general admission and $3 for students. All tickets at the gate will be $6.

Wes, your reply to Mike5011ad was disengenuous, proven by the coverage in the September 19 Victoria Advocate. The paper is partly named after the city where it is published, Victoria. St. Joseph is in Victoria. That the non-bylined story of St. Joseph's game with Houston Second Baptist was lumped in the "roundup" shows the Advocate's disregard for a school located in the same town as its printing press.
September 19, 2009 at 11:47 p.m.Scout,
September 19, 2009 at 7:59 a.m.Please keep your comments to yourself. You have no idea what you are talking about. You try and come across as an expert but all you do is give out incorrect information.
Finley Sr and junior were both at the homecoming pep rally last night. He was sitting in his mule holding his grandbaby just in front of the band. Coach Campbell was not a good football coach, but he was at least their for his team and cheered them on.
September 18, 2009 at 4:24 p.m.For all the Viper faithful most of us are not down on the kids. Its the coaching that stinks for the last 10 years. A 5A school this big should make the playoffs every year. When your coach does not show up to pep rallies for homecoming and does not come out of his office on saturday to show his face to the CYFL kids (100 yards from his office to the field) he is not about winning he is about padding his pocketbook.
September 18, 2009 at 3:43 p.m.St. Joseph has been covered just as much as Memorial this season. Jack Molitor wrote a feature story and an advance for today's game against Houston Second Baptist. I wrote a story for Sunday's paper on John Mares' 100th win. That is three stories on the Flyers just this week. If my math backs me up, that means we've wrote three stories on the Flyers this week and two about Memorial.
September 18, 2009 at 1:37 p.m.There is no St. Joseph coverage because they win regularly. It is more important to cover the meeting of two of the worst football teams in south Texas.
September 18, 2009 at 1:01 p.m.KOBA, VISD is an EOE employer. All positions will be decided by the current A.D., Mr. Finley.
When he takes it to Chapa they both decided they have the best people. Then it goes to the board who assume all the research data was done, its signed and VISD issues/distractions resumes again.
Yes there is nepotism policy to review, certified teachers to review, equal facilities, coaches, games to review. What is the assistant A.D. doing?
Lets go back to early 1980's. Do you remember the baseball faisco at Sting Baseball. Remember how the community moved him? hint.
I know the kids of VISD are better than what is being shown at all levels.
Moody will bring thier A game.
September 18, 2009 at 12:44 p.m.So where is the St. Joseph coverage? They are going to be playing the fifth rated passing QB IN THE NATION this week (Connor Wood has already commited to Texas), but the advoacte is only covering a non-district Memorial game. Are you really trying to cover stories or are you just trying to bring in more people by giving them a space to bash the Memorial coaches?
September 18, 2009 at 12:41 p.m.I am Highly anticipating next year! There is no need to beat a dead horse. However everyone should be concerned at the demise of Victoria athletics. Sure we where never state contenders but the city's program was sound on many levels. There is hope but i dont think there is much hope if we dont hire new leaders! Seriously Finley needs to go. Not only as the head coach but also as the A.D. How long are we going to let this lackluster coach control the program?! He has already openly admitted to being ready to be done with coaching hes obviously only putting in half the effort. Not showing up to a pepraley sounds more like laziness and less like superstition. If this is in fact a superstition maybe its time for the coach to start rethinking it because what hes currently doing isn't working!
September 18, 2009 at 12:36 p.m.It is sad if what scout says is true, but people can still be fired. Right?
September 18, 2009 at 12:20 p.m.Scout, I’m looking at this from a common sense approach. Since this is the last year of consolidation, VISD should be obligated to open the Athletic Director position up for candidates. Think back to the fiasco when a new baseball coach was named before posting the job for applicants.
I am not suggesting that all positions need to re-apply for their job by any means. I am stating that since the current position is Athletic Director/Head Football Coach, the “new” position will be Athletic Director. This is not a current position at VISD and as such should be open to candidates.
September 18, 2009 at 12:03 p.m.I was at a Howell junior high game yesterday, and I was shocked at the way a couple of the parents were running down the coaches. I watched before the game, and saw the boys going thru their warm up drills, and I was impressed by the amount of discipline that they were displaying. This obviously came from the coaches and not the parents that were doing the mouthing. At one point, two parents were having a confrontation just feet behind the team. What an example they are to the kids. What chance does a coach or teacher have when the kids go home to such poor role models.
September 18, 2009 at 11:48 a.m.Coach Finley has a dual title of A.D. He will retain that title but lose the coach title.
It's in the contract. The board gave him the ultimate hire/fire duties. So if win/lose, it would reflect on him.
I suggest to get knowledge coaches in the middle schools. These programs are hiliaroius. You must know the common rules of your sport. Not all of the coaches are this way but a majority are clueless on game strategies or how to implement a game situation task. You fix this and your HS will see the benefits. imo.
September 18, 2009 at 11:35 a.m.Does anyone know what score was from last nights Jr Varsity game?
September 18, 2009 at 11:25 a.m.I believe our boys will win some games this year beginning tonight. I also believe the wins will be in spite of Mickey Finley, not because of Mickey Finley. Whatever the outcome, please show our boys support, they are doing the best that they know how to do.
I have already e-mailed my School Board representative my thoughts on keeping Mickey Finley "in any capacity" after this school year. I encourage you to do the same.
"WE'RE GOING TO TURN THIS TEAM AROUND 360 DEGREES."
September 18, 2009 at 11:13 a.m.Jason Kidd, upon his drafting to the Dallas Mavericks
I hope Victoria Memorial get it together, before they make there trip up here to face the Wagner Thunderbirds. Wagner is no joke this year. There defense is hard hitting and very fast. The Offense is too fast for most defense. We like tough games not shutouts.
September 18, 2009 at 9:41 a.m.If the vipers dont win tonight it will be a very, very long season, not to say that it wont be a long season already. I cant belive he wont attend the pep rally for homecoming. That tells you there he is not about the team. By the way my prediciton Memorial 24 Moody 27
September 18, 2009 at 8:13 a.m.this guy is awful. I am talking about the Head Coach of the Vipers who the kids look up to. Maybe its one of his superstitions not to go to PEP RALLYs but gaw-lee, he is the Head Coach. He is suppose to motivate the boys its awful that he is a NO-SHOW. I wander if he attends the Banquet???
VISD....we, as parents should deserve better for our kids especially in other teams beside football. If he does not respect his own team, just think what he believes in the others----NADA. Maybe it will take a LOSS to Moody to wake up the mighty Herd hiding in the pasture. Good Luck boys, I will be there rooting god willing.
Question? anyone ever interviewed David Hartman (cyfl guru) for AD????? lol
September 17, 2009 at 11:49 p.m.Did my coach teach me to block or should I just watch him run right by me?
